I remember spurr saying he was going to make the switch to berger

but I no longer use media that:

-is very acidic
-is hydrophobic
-prone to create dry spots
-needs to be watered in stages
-compacts during a grow
-perlite...

we're currently paying 21 bucks per bale of pro-mix hp w/myco (by the pallet, right from the pro-mix 'factory').. ironically it costs us more here to make our own from pro-moss, perlite, lime, etc.. so we are actually saving money, and time, by buying pro-mix

I guess it depends on the quality of ingredients used. It is more economic for us to get Promoss at $8 to $9 and mix in vermicompost, topsoil, coarse sand, treated biochar, bentonite, DE.
- total cost around $16 tops.

treated bio char? or is that real bio char? char plus bio = biochar? it's a sad state around here to what people seem to think biochar is. with ya MM.

Wow, over $60/bale is a good deal?!? It's $20 for a 3.8 cubic ft bale of Alaskan Peat in the Seattle area. Seems expensive to me. I can point anyone in the Seattle or Portland areas to good sources, just send me a PM. But if you're unable to get it, this might be a good deal cause the bales are very heavy for shipping.

Thanks for that link. When I landed there I looked at the other links suggested for me and I learned that Ace Hardware carries Premier Horticulture Sphagnum Peat Moss, 3.8 c.f. for $16.99

It appears that you order it through the Ace Hardware web site, have it shipped to a local Ace Hardware store only i.e. not your home or place of business - there is no S&H

That's a really good deal - about $4.25 per c.f landed cost - worth checking out.

Thanks, Soursmoker!

I just picked up a bale at Agway. I find myself shopping there more and more, so it would make sense if I could get it there.

I have another wholesaler that sells me Pro Mix cheaper than if I mix it myself, but I am concerned about the inorganic wetting agents and perlite in the Pro Mix so I am going to try switching to peat, gypsum, and DE (Napa 8822) for a seed and clone mix, I need a good cheap source of mycorrhizae to add to it.

Why are you talking about my wife?

It is also for those frightened by the whole lime thingy because it's pre limed. And compared with other grow store mediums, it just might be a bargain.....scrappy

And by limed does that mean dolomite? I personally do not like the Ca:Mg ratio on dolomite...I would never use it alone

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I just picked up some SPM labeled as Greensmix. From a company in WI, USA. Harvested there as well.

Seems light in color and still fiborous(SP?)..... Not too composted or broken down.

Anyone used this one before?

Regards

I just got off the phone with "alaska peat inc."

-I said I'm calling from "X", Canada, I was just wondering where I can get a bail of your alaska peat?

-She says, what? -I repeat the question.

-She says oh hang on lemme transfer you to 'other girl'

-'other girl' picks up phone, she's says hello.

-I repeat the question.

-She says "Who is this?!" in a strange tone.

-I said, uh.. just a regular consumer.. not a retailer or anything (I didn't know what she was even asking really)

-She's like, we don't ship it...(I never asked if they shipped it)

-I live in Canada, where can I get it.

-She says "you cant get it".

-I try and figure out what dimension I'm in, then say "you guys are a Canadian company right; you're in Canada? Where can I get it, like home depot or canadian tire or something?

-She's like "no". (just no?) chewing food or a pencil or something...

-I was like...sooo, but you guys sell it in the States right?

-She kinda interrupts me saying "we don't sell to the East" like she was f**kin' TuPac talking to NAS or something.

Yea, Great company guys. Not only are they awesome in the fact they don't sell to half of their own country WHILE shipping outside of that very country to USA, and are called Alaska peat inc when their stuff is from Alberta Canada, but they're super polite and professional.

EPIC SARCASM.

It's extremely frustrating. I've spent hours over the last few days trying to find/get Ancient Forest (by GH) any and everywhere, Canada (nope) and USA (nope/$70+ for shipping on a $10 bag of dirt).

LSS, I found out they can import it because of, essentially, the worms/organisms that may be present in it. G-T-F-O-H NOW! Hah.

So Canada is harvesting Canadian sphagnum/peat from Canada, packaging it up, shipping it to the US, where they turn around and say they can't ship to Canada because the Canadian organisms inside can't be imported into Canada. (not referring to AF in this case)

Now THAT is marketing/ignorance/crazy at it's best and all rolled up into one.

Lets see how much trouble I have finding the proper Lambert, Premier, or other acceptable sphagnum where I live now...
*now that I know I don't need GH ancient forest; just a quality sphagnum*
