I always thought it is inherited, it is genetics, at some landraces like dalat or zamal, it is hard to find clean male, and you can get a lot of clean females. but if Mr. Mac can repeat it even with landrace like zamal, then I will change my opinion. but I didnt see him to do that with zamal :D

Hi Lola, good luck in your endeavors....
Do you still have the female plants ? one way you could make some pure Malawi seeds is to reverse one of them and make some feminised seeds.. worth considering.
Or perhaps you could try and find someone else with the line and try to procure some seeds from a different batch or even just some pollen.

Thanks.

I kept the 6 most vigorous female Swazi plants and will clone them (prior to crossing them with the Malawi hybrid) to either backcross or possibly try to reverse. I don't have any experience with creating feminized seeds, but I'll give it a shot. I also still have some of the original seeds. I had a 100% germination ratio so i figured they should be good for a while, even though the seeds are 9.5 years old.

Update: I recently popped 9 more Swazi seeds. 8 out of 9 popped. Seeds will soon be 13 years old this year, so germ rate is still pretty good. After they sexed , I kept the 6 strongest. Once again, all were female. Also germinated 6 Swazi/Red Congolose crosses (bred at the same time as the Swazi with the same male pollen donor) and luckily got 2 males. Kept 4 out 6 that germinated.
Last attempt at germinating the Swazi/Red Conglolese crosses also resulted in all females, so I'm not sure if the different growing conditions influenced the male ratio in the cross or it was simply dumb luck. This time around, instead of putting many plants in one container, 5 large containers with 2 plants each were used. LEDs used also seemed to emit a more purplish light. All Swazis have been pollinated and calyxes are growing.

Resulting genetics will be 75% Swazi, 12.5% Congolese, 6.25% Mexican and 6.25% Afghani.
Hopefully enough to effectively mute the Afghani affect.

The question is in the op - have you had high male counts when using LEDs. Possible answers are "yes" or "no".
Yes and no.

My last grow out of 9 plants, 8 males.

Current grow 12 plants, 11 female.

Yes they are under LED. Luck of the ganja gods.

Guess I've had weird luck (or not so much for breeding purposes) with 30/30 female Swazis from the same batch of seeds.
