KungPOW!!! makes a FLIP/FLOP

instead of having the ballast on 24hrs you would have the ballast 12/12 timer and have the timer for the flip flop box set to every 1,2 hours ect.

And then the the flip would just keep flipping after lights off? Basically flipping nothing?

I am not really interested in doing this but I am curious to know how ths would work.

If you were flipping between two lights every two hours, how would you set it up to stop after 12 hours and give you 12 hours of dark?
i personaly love the idea of this so i'll try to answer: the ballasts stays on 24/7, and teh flipflop switched the on to either bulb for 12 hours. i guess you can think of it like a trade off of energy between two bulbs and teh flipflop keeps everything fair. it gives 12 hours to one, while the others off, once the time is up the it flips and one gets juice while the other doesnt.

i mean if you have the room to do it, it pretty much doubles whatever lighting you have. instead of 1 ballast per bulb you can have one ballast feeding 2 bulbs. so what/however many plants you have under one 1k, you can have 2k instead.

EDIT: ok so for example for you , youve got 9k right? well a flipflop would allow you to have an 18k grow instantly!!! allowing that you have enough space though and its all 12/12

did that help at all, or was i just blabbering? but for what you got goin on yamaha, this shit would be your best friend , IMO of course

Did you read the last few posts??? I know what a flip flop is.

what about having 2 lights in the same tent and flipping between them every hour or 2 for 12 hrs?

The post I was referring to was a poster who wanted to use TWO bulbs in ONE room and alternate every TWO hours

Okay, this question may or may not have been answered already, I only read 3-4 pages of the thread.

Anyway, regarding to digital ballasts on a flip/flop.

They will work. You just need an extra timer. You'll lose out on a few minutes of light, but its still worth it IMO. Instead of plugging your ballast directly into its own power source, run it on its own timer. Set the timer to power off the ballast about 5 minutes before the flip, then to power it back on 5 minutes after the flip.

Synchronize your timers well, and check them every so often and it should work just fine. You're just losing about 5 minutes of light per side.

For running with digital ballasts, and needing to power off the ballast for a few minutes when the relays flip - what type of timer can shut off the ballast for 5 minutes 2x per day?
how much do they cost?

just thinking it might be easier to just buy another ballast...

great post!

Question: I have a ballast that is wired to 120v but my room is supplied by 240v, so in theory I could just split a normal 15a 120v receptacle (half it) and run my ballasts at 120v off 1 leg of 240v????

So basically, my setup is timer box with a 15a 240v breaker and a 15a 120v breaker. the 240v runs my lights the 120v runs accessories. My ballasts will plug into the 240v receptacles (insert above question) and than into a flip flop...so to elaborate on my question above, should I switch the 120v plugs on my ballasts to 240v or can I use normal 120v receptacles split in half and keep my ballasts wired for 120v??

also, is your setup wired for 240v thus the reason you half your plugs?

hope that makes sense.

Dank,
No. That is not an acceptable replacement. The OP used DPDT relays and you are looking at a SPST.
Please do not take my word for it... look at the data sheets. (links provided below)

The OP used DPDT relays (model : R04-11A30-120). Datasheet:
www.nteinc.com/relay_web/pdf/R04.pdf

The relay you selected (700HG45A1) is a SPST. Please see selection guide here:
http://www.ab.com/en/epub/catalogs/12768/229240/229266/229643/229707/tab3.html

Note that model :700-HG42A1 (on same page) appears to be an acceptable replacement.
