So now I suppose the states legalizing "medical marijuana-marihuana" should change the laws to medical cannabis? I don't see that happening

Ah, the "slave name" argument.

It might make some sense if society as a whole had a significant difference in attitude towards the plant because of the name being used, but I don't see it -- the average person just doesn't differentiate the terms.

It may be true to say there's a historical perspective which illustrates that the term "marihuana" was used to provide a pejorative slant, but I'm not really sure any of that particular slant due to the use of the term still exists today.

And even if it does, why not "rehabilitate" the term by using it when also referring to positive things in relation to the plant? If you simply shun the term it will always be lurking around with a negative connotation waiting to be deployed again by someone at some point.

P.S. One of the things I thought was cool about pot culture when I first got into toking are all the names weed can go by as well as all the other terms you learn -- it's like a secret language.

I suppose next you will tell us we are hereby ordered to call the good stuff "dro"?

Cannabis is too long of a word. It almost reminds me of rope.

You call it what you want and I call it what I want.

I tend to use Cannabis rather than marijauna when I can. I use caps to Honor the plant...Not just to piss spur off ;)

I get sick of the word 'pot'. The news media beats that word to death.

Yeah, that's probably the only slang for Cannabis that I really don't care for. What's the origin of the word pot anyway?

I just prefer to use Cannabis also. I capitalize it because it's the genus name.

Its illegal, regulated and used to mark free thinking people no matter what it is called all over the world by oppressive powers.

Using the word "Cannabis" has become fashionable and used to try to dress up something that is beautiful and needs no packaging.

Call it "good" and focus on the small minded people that only do what they are told, and how we can get them to think and find out themselves.

Whatever its called its my friend.

Doesn't Marijuana mean "killer weed"? That couldn't be further from the truth.

Not as far as I can find. The etymology seems quite shrouded in mystery. There's one suggestion of it meaning "prisoner", but that's in dispute and possibly just a slur by Anslinger.

Even so, "prisoner" doesn't seem that bad if you think of it the right way -- free the weed! ;) It literally is a prisoner -- a victim of a wrongdoing.

Etymology

The term, originally spelled variously as marihuana, mariguana, etc., originated in Mexican Spanish.[2] The ultimate derivation is unknown. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it may come from the Nahuatl mallihuan, meaning prisoner.[1] Author Martin Booth notes that this etymology was popularized by Harry J. Anslinger in the 1930s, during his campaigns against the drug.[3] However, linguist Jason D. Haugen finds no semantic basis for a connection to mallihuan, suggesting that the phonetic similarity may be "a case of accidental homophony".[4]:94

Additionally, traditional association with the personal name María Juana ("Mary Jane") is probably a folk etymology.[5] The original Mexican Spanish used forms with the letter 'h' (marihuana). Forms using the letter 'j' (marijuana) seem to be an innovation of English, though they later appeared in French and in Spanish, probably due to English influence.[1]

Its gonna have as many names as there are cultures that smoke it . giving this plant one name is just never going to happen . legal or not . the governments seem to have tagged it Medical Marijuana & i can't see that changing much even if it gets legalized . there are probably as many nick names for it as there are members here . weed, smoke , grass , pot , hemp ect ......... but mainly its called by its sellability .... commercial ... mids or kind bud .
here in my part of the world we call it pot , weed , ganja & buds . most of the old timers here call it refer or weed . the new comers call it by some of its strain names like haze or chronic whether its that strain type or not . I was showing one of the black guys i work with a couple nuggets of some sour diesel i had & he's like " thats some straight up haze yo " i couldn't help but laugh at that ( to myself ) cuz its far from being a haze ..... but it makes my point . it doesn't really matter what its called we all know what it is by many names .

To be clear, I feel that the words bud and weed are acceptable. They are merely facts of the plant, not an automatic capitulation to hate.

a 'weed' is a nuisance plant.

I dont understand taking offensive to one misnomer, but embracing another.

Cannabis is not nearly as prolific as kudzu or dandelions; unwelcome and invasive are two metrics i would gauge a 'weed' by.

dried flowers FTW.

Some people call it shit

George Carlin had a funny skit where he called it shit to a narc. He asked the narc if he wanted to buy some shit. The narc asked how much. George said some high number and the narc said it must be some good shit. George asked him if he wanted some papers to go with his shit and the narc said yes, give me a roll.

Do we really need to be told what to call it? I mean really?
