I have a question GL...
If this site strips out the EXIF on uploaded pictures, then how come existenzophile was able to post the exif data from a picture posted here by unicorn ?

http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=42563
see post #11 in above link

Is this strip exif function something which is to be set by the individual users in their gallery settings (which is what it appears to be from that screenshot you showed) and unicorn just had not set his gallery to strip the exif data...or has that automatic function stopped working correctly ?

If its user controlled, I suggest that the default setting be set automatically in case the users missed it.

Exif data consists of a variety of information about the camera, image and file, the image below has some examples (taken from exif pilot):

Irfanview is an image resizing tool which allows the removal of exif data on save:

Hope this helps.

EDIT - Irfanview also allows you to save files as progressive jpgs which makes for nicer use on the web.

You can spoof MACs on a Windows machine with SMAC.

http://www.klcconsulting.net/smac/

If you use privoxy and tor with a laptop from an unencrypted public wifi spot, while spoofing your MAC, then do you think that the communications are pretty much safe?

This is assuming that you do not pay for anything with a credit card (e.g. coffee), the spot has no surveillance cameras, and the contents of your unencrypted communications do not contain any identifying information.

My only concern at this point is the initial leg of the broadcast, from the laptop to the wireless access point. But I live in a large city with many, many open wireless networks, so I can just pick and choose different networks to use at different times.

What do y'all think?

I have read about tor's weaknesses, but I have not researched them yet. Are there any other good alternatives?

The new Tor /Privoxy was not working on my mac with the latest OS. It did before.
Anonymouse works for some browsing , but you can't post.

As far as uploading photos from someone else's wireless besides your own, is your mac id contained no matter what? never heard this before. I never signed up for .MAC ( as useless as AOL ever was).

MAC in this context refers to Media Access Control and a MAC address is something the every computer networking connectivity device has hardwired into it. In other words, the place where you plug your network cable into or the place where your computer's wireless signals come out of has a unique number associated with it.

If you are paranoid you can spoof your MAC address, among other things, whenever you want to maintain privacy. A MAC address is just another way to identify someone based on their computer communications and computer equipment.
