There's a small delay with the initial DNS lookup while surfing but usually it speeds up fine after that.

And with an encrypted proxy app like Tor, carnivore (which isnt even used anymore)would get lost after just a few steps of that major job.

-KRS Juan-
why in god's name would you believe the bushies' saying no more carnivore? remember, these are the people who knew where the wmds were in iraq, but I agree with your fundamental point, it's hard to turn an ip into a name and address, harder still if you add an encrypted proxy server (which in theory could be a honeypot all on its own)

...Yeah guys......please keep your security as tight as possible......in these harrowing times we would not want to see anyone fall foul to those that might persecute you just for growing plants...

Left: I dont believe the "Bushies". I bleieve my friends who work at the CIA who say carnivore was a testbed for a much bigger, badder system, thats up and running now in place of carnivore.

If you think Tor is a honeypot, download the source and inspect it yourself. Or take the EFF's word if you cant read code.

The gallery extracts exif for you.

By this ("extracts") do you mean it gets rid of the exif ?

I can read code, I'd tend to trust anything in open source from eff. and you sort of contradict yourself. if something bigger and badder than carnivore is up and running, then my original point is valid

Hello,

I am a bit confused on posting pictures.

When you post a pic online does this compromise your security?

How exactly do I get the "exif" data out of my pics.

I am downloading the ExifPro program that GL recommended, but a confused as to what I need to do.

Sorry for sounding foolish, but better to have the info beat into my head and be safe, then to stay silent and risk my safety.

Thanks for any help.

Take care

Peace

Student- I have a feeling this site removes Exif information when uploadin pics... G/L has posted on this before...

is "extract" remove GL?

thanks

yeah I just posted that link to that app so you could see the exif data in your pics if you are the curious type. after uploading a pic there wont be any.

Hello,

Thanks for the replys.

I know that we are protected here on icmag.

However I post (text) on other cannabis sites, and do not know if they take the same security measures as does the admin here.

In short I thought that the app that GL put up was to remove any "fingerprints" from your pictures if you wanted to post them online at other sites.

Do I understand it corectly that when I take a picture and use any program to resize it, that this will remove the info needed. Then it is safe to post the pic?

I currently use the TOR/Privoxy combo and have taken the java and proxy tests at stilllistener.com. I receive an A or A- on a constant basis.

Take care

Peace

I dont think resizing rids the exif info from the pic... there are specific scripts/apps for doin that... ill try and dig up something.

Question...

Question...

ok, Tor and privoxy installed and running...

do i just minimize both windows and let it do its thing, or does it require anything else to work properly??

what about all of the pics we have posted here before installing Tor & Privoxy??

thanks!

Tor & Privoxy (from here on out called T&P cause im lazy) have nothing to do with the pic's. T&P mask your connection to "questionable" websites so that anyone trying to observe it's traffic wont see who is using it.

The only security risk with posting photos (besides the common sense stuff) is the EXIF info.

The application GL posted was just to let you look at your EXIF info. Not every camera saves things like serial numbers, so it's a good app to try (on windows) and see what kind of information your camera injects into it's photo's.

the-student: Just resizing a pic will not strip the EXIF information. Copy the image and paste it into a new document, then resize and save it.

IS anyone here using Mac OS X 10.4 tiger? If theres enough demand I could whip up an Automator script to remove the pertinant info.

Hello,

KRS Juan - This is what I have started doing. I downloaded the app GL talked about, and sure enough almost all of the pics on my PC have EXIF info. This program shows a pic has no EXIF info by displaying a (circle with a line through it) and the letters EXIF next to it.

So, I tried by resizing the pics to a usable size (needed step anyway) and then save them into a new folder on my desktop.

I then go back into the EXIFpro app and it shows the no EXIF symbol by the newly resized (and saved in the new folder) pictures.

I am sure this is quite the round-about method, as I really am quite computer illiterate as far as anything other than being online.

This method seems to be working as best as I can tell, does it sound o.k. to you?

Thanks

Take care

Peace

got it. Thanks for the Exif Pro headsup GL. I've been using Thumbsplus and I like the rotate buttons on Exif Pro. Also Thumbsplus and Photoshop CS2 retain the exif after rotate and save. If icmag automatically removes exif data, the only danger is if the files are intercepted on the way up. If you want to see some data and you have Photoshop, open an image and go file-file info and poke around. Photoshop DOES remove exif data after a resize and "save for web."
I just tested it and went back to pix I've uploaded and there was no exif info. Sweet...
