Ice-tube cloner from WallyWorld

So I tried out the ice cube tube thing. It didn't quite work so well for me. Mayhaps it be my slothfullness but most of my shoots grew a fuzzy mold thing and rotted. I did happen to get 2 shoots to root though so it does work.

However I have discoverd something almost idiot proof.

0004749781582_215X215.jpg

This fish tank solved all my problems. Mine has a hood that goes over top with two sockets and most even have a little plastic tray so your little ones don't get overly saturated with water.

My bulbs are (2) 11W twisty 27k
I use styro dixies with a pearlite, peatmoss, vermiculite mixture.

PEARLITE, Pearlite, pearlite...I can't stress this one enough. I use about 3 to 1 on my big pots and in cloning just enough peat and vermiculite to hold in some moisture. Then on the top 2 inches I put a pure peat layer.

Once I've filled my cup I flood it with water till it won't get any wetter. After this I poke a hole down to the bottom of cup and insert the freshly cut and treated clone (I use $5 greenlite hormone).

Then I place the cups in the aquarium and mist with pure water 1-3 times per day for 2 weeks. After this I can take them out into my normal veg environment and by the end of weeks 3 or 4 I usually see roots coming out the bottom of a 12oz dixie.

so once again thats:

a $10-20 fish tank (10 gallon)
(2) 11 Watt CFL bulbs
8-12 oz styrofoam cups
Pearlite
Peat moss (sunshine mix or whatever you use for large plants)
Vermiculite (mix 2 parts pearlite to 1 part of peat&vermiculite.)

Oh and don't forget the handy dandy spray bottle :p

Or you can just grab a brick of Coco and a Beer Cup, roots in 6 days...no misting. Might cost you 5 bucks.

Well let me ask you something....

Did you enclose the cloner in something ...

you know humidity dome type thing???

Yes I did. They were falling over without it. They were a little small for clones though ...1/8th diameter I would say. Still learning ;)

So far if someone was to ask me I would say cut off a 5-8" sprig about 1/4" in diameter and you probably won't have problems in most methods.

Absolutely not it would cause mold....

That is what happened to me.
So far with the aquarium though I've had a 96% success rate and the 2 that didn't make it were from a longshot small woody revegged stalk thing that was my first plant and I wanted to experiment after I harvested all 7 grams lol. (of the 3 I took on that mom 2 didn't make it)

both you guys sound like you have some experience growing
so, rather than asking simple questions and making experimental
changes, you might could just read the first 10 pages or so
of the thread where the instructions on how to use these
is fully explained.

if you'd done that you wouldn't have to ask these questions
that have been asked and answered so many times before.

hell, just filter my posts and you'll see many, many photographic
examples of just how well these work and just how 'idiot' proof
they really are.

Thanks again Burnt Rope for sharing this wonderful method.
(and i didn't change a freekin thing, lol)

Too each thier own. I was just listing another cheap method that might work for others. Not saying this method didn't and no questions from me. I have 2 rooted bubblegum clones from this ice cube tray method even with my changing things. I intitally even waded thru the pages describing how to do it but that was a few months prior to my actually setting it up. I probably should have read again but in the end a fish tank lying around my house unused and all the other parts I needed already available I tried something else and it seemed to work better for my particular setup.

Burnt Rope is the man with a nice affordable plan and I'm not trying to take anything away from his wonderful thread mayhaps someone will learn from my post and decide that they want to experiment or at least take thier ice cube tray out of a humidity chamber and avoid my mistake that he was kind enough to point out for probably the hundreth time in this massive thread.

that's one of the basic things explained in the beginning,
that you don't use any kind of humidity dome with this
method.

truth is, it's so simple there are really only a few simple
steps, rules if you will, that you have to follow to get this
to work with close to 100% success.

1) don't let your reservoir dry out, in fact it is best to keep
your res about 1 inch deep.
2) keep your res temps between 80 - 82 for optimal results.
3) use vermiculite, other media have been tried with limited
success but the vermiculite is the most reliable media.
4) and follow healthy cutting techniques like clean tools and making angled cuts.
5) rooting hormone, powders or gel or liquid is optional, they aren't needed but they do speed things up a bit.

that's it really, and btw, if only 2 of 27 rooted, you did something wrong.

Too date that was 2 failures out of 50 clones with the aquarium. (both from the same weak mother and the third from it took)

it was the quoted text below i was referring to bro.

here you said when you did it 'right' only 2 rooted so
you did someting not 'right'.

Geez people....

I read the Thread, I ordered My Ice Tuber
I placed it in some Tupperware, filled the cells with Verm, added water to the Res, Stuck them Clones (with and without Green light rooting hormone) then placed the whole cloner on top of a 65w Fluorescent hood, and misted occasionaly every couple days. No DOME.

100% success other than the cuttings which were not receiving ANY light due to being overshadowed by the others.
^^ that happens to be the only SLIGHT downfall to this system, you can jam many clones in a close, compact space, but sometimes it's just a little bit too cramped.

Another convert here. Vermiculite = <3 <3 <3

I went from dreading cloning and 10-20% success rate -> cloning without a care in the world and 100% success.

I couldn't find the "tubes" at my wally world, but I did find some cheap plastic popsicle trays that are absolutely perfect. Drilled a tiny hole in the bottom of each individual "popsicle", works a charm.

The biggest investment I made was a half-decent heating pad (like you use for your back) with 8 settings and a perma-on option. Even on the low setting, the res got too warm, but two layers of kitchen towel solved that, steady as she goes around 81 degrees. 12 days later they are in the dirt and vegging.

I also used the little 6-pack plastic jiffy trays, but found clones harder to remove from them.

SO glad I found this method!

I love reading posts like this.....

It proves to me that if you follow directions...

The main points.....

The ice tube tray....or reasonable facsimile

A heat source to keep temps over 80 degrees....

and a thermometer.....

It works.....

so a few of the flowering clones also rooted. all of them that were left in there were still healthy and looked to be about to root.but i had enough already so i tossed them...thanks again for the thread! i highly recommend trying it out, i just picked up 3 more trays so i can do up to 108!

Ok I am struggling. I am not having good luck with this method. Though, I Really want to make it work. I have tried two rounds. The first round I made 26 clones and had 2 success. My second round I ran two trays with 45 clones from 6 different strains and only had 7 root after 3 weeks!

First round I used one ice tray. Three holes in each with 1/8 drill. Using fine grade verm from Lowes. Heating mat set to 80 with probe put into one if th ice tubes. External thermometer in reservoir to ensure proper temp. Verm put in tubes and let sit until wet up top pressed down the verm in each tube but not too hard. . Put more verm in to fill top again. Cuttings were dipped in root tech gel and inserted into tubes. Lightly pressed around stems to make the verm tight. Filled reservoir so water was 1 inch above blue caps. Used ro water. Added some mychorizea (great white, 1 scoop) in water.

My second trying to use this method I did the same as before but didn't add any mychrozea and used my tap water (well water). Also used 2 trays.

I am really frustrated. I am anal about my cloning approach. I use 70% iso to clean all my tools before making cuts, I cut twice for each clone (one from the mother the next right before dipping in hormone), and use fresh razors every few cuts. My mothers are very healthy. My light source is very minimal.

I don't know what else todo. Very frustrated.

try using your RO water without the myco, everything
you've written suggests it should be working fine.

personally, i just use tap water from the city with a
couple drops of superthrive although i've had great
success without the superthrive as well.

i also use just regular vermiculite as i've never been
able to find the fine grade stuff and i'm positively lax
when it comes to blades and such as i just use a pair
of scissors to make my cuts, and i don't clean them
between cuts or different plants either although i do
make 2 cuts, same as you do.

also, while i've had success leaving my cuts in for
up to 17 days, i'd not recommend you leave them
in for that long as, in my case at least, i had several
inchs of roots growing out of the bottom which of
course broke off when i took the blue bottom off.
i have found that 14 days is optimal, healthy roots
while not so long they poke out the bottom.

i also tamp the vermiculite pretty tightly in the
beginning and then i use a 16penny nail to poke
holes for the stems and then i pack the wet verm
very tightly around the stems, you want to be
sure you have good contact between the stems
and the vermiculite.

don't get discouraged, there aren't that many
variables here and it seems to me the problem
may be the quality of your well water.

try another run and take careful notes and between
us we will figure out which variable is off and we will
set it right for you brother.

Some things that might help....

do not use the myco..... it will not help here...

This system does not create roots...

it simply gives them time to form by themselves....

I like my friend someotherguy finds that if things are in tune...14 days is pretty optimum for most strains....

Your results suggest your temps are low....

however with the heat mat maybe not....

I dont quite get how you are checking temps....

I use a 3 dollar stainless steel aquarium thermometer just put it where the cloner will sit.....

You might try without rooting hormone....as they can inhibit root growth if the percents are too high.....

I know your brand is higher than mine on a percent basis.....

WHat Im suggesting is the plain jane approach.......

Tap water.... accurate temps and no rooting hormone......

Normally if the clones do not wilt in the first 12 hours they are fine.....

Im also a little uncomforable with your light source as 'being minimal'.....

Im not sure what that means....

My guess whats wrong????

temps.....

setting your mat at 80 isnt the same thing as measuring the temps with a thermometer.....
