Ice-tube cloner from WallyWorld

Hey guys! First off, thanks BurntRope for this awesome idea!!! The clear tubes I think are going to work really good for checking roots. I am just getting started in all of this and have been doing multiple visual inspections. I know that couldn't be good! I don't care though at this point, I really want to see what is happening down there so I know what to expect and if I loose some it is nbd.

That all being said, these clear tubes are about 1.5 inches inside so they may be a little big. The clones I pulled had rather small roots (6-8 roots about 1/4" long) and I may have pulled them too soon, and watered the soil too much at planting time, and generally just cursed them with my vast newbiness. I just don't know! I'm sexing my potential moms so I am anxious.

I do have some questions for you pros though!

1. What is minimal-average-ideal root length and number of roots for planting to soil?

2. I have read in other threads using rapid rooters and whatnot that it is best to plant into nearly dry soil so the roots stretch right away, and does this apply to rooted cuttings without the rooting medium attached?

3. Do you guys hit them with nutes right out of the gate or let them pull from the soil for a couple weeks? (I'm now using FFOF btw.) Also, bloom or veg nutes?

The clones I've planted are not taking off like I had hoped so I think I am doing something wrong. Although there is some new growth after a week. I'm struggling with the moms too trying to figure out what they need so it is what it is. Moms, have been screaming for Mg and N which they are now getting so I think that end is coming around. I'm now working up the soil with lime to help the MG and am starting to be less gunshy about feeding them.

Anyways, if you guys could shed some light on the above that would be great. Also, just curious how long the ice cube tubes are... my tubes are about 3-4 inches.

Jed

1. what I think is a good solution is to simply remove the blue caps then if the root is visable at the bottom it is plenty rooted enough... Im not sure how that translates to your home made system....

2. I am not a believer in the dry soil bit.....

3. I actually start feeding after about 7 days in the cloner....
Its about half the strength of what I feed in early veg....

Myself I think ffof is terribly overpriced....

I prefer an inert mix like promix and then a good high quality 2 bottle system.... one for veg and one for bloom....

I use botanicare....

I'm starting to see roots on the sides of a couple tubes now so I will wait it out as long as I can. I assume your tubes are 2-3 inches deep, so I assume you are saying that a 2-3 inch root base is ideal.

Thanks for the help

So I've used this method since this thread started (different user-name) and just dug it out again to clone some bubachunk. Put them in on the 23rd. Did not take care of them all that great. Low temps, no mist/low humidity, constantly checking for roots lol. I really didn't need them to root this time just a test after I pruned the mom that night.

So 2 days ago, clones 8 days old, no roots so I got impatient and built a homemade bubble cloner. Got it up and running.

Today I find that my trays of water that the vermiculite cloner was sitting in was dry and they were limp, decided to put them in the bubble cloner tonight, pull them out and they have roots started :D

Still works.... it's apparently just a weed and really wants to survive

:smokeit:

1st time cloning or growing for that matter and i used to walmart cloner with great success. i started with 5 nirvana bubblelisious taking 2 clones from each and placing them in the cloner with vermiculite and schults takeroot. i did nothing but keep the temps at around 84 and top off with aged tapwater. on day 8 all but one had rooted. same day 2 of the original 5 showed maled so i ditched them and the clones that came from them. i transplanted into 20oz containers and them place them back in veg cab. when i came back the 2 days later them temps had fallen into the low 40s and i apparently placed them too close to the lights as they had major light burn. i backed them away from the lights, placed them back on the heatpad, and placed a humdity dome on the worse one. as of last night they had all bounced back but 2. one of witch i think was the unrooted one but its still somewhat alive so im gunna leave it in for now.

I guess I should go with what works. After a week working with the bubble cloner.... getting snot on the stems and no other roots I've cleaned and transferred the cuttings back into the wallmart cloner.

Right now I have clones taken at the same time from the same plant and have

4 in the bubble cloner with EWC tea added
3 in a 32 container of perlite and water
8 in the walmart cloner with vermic

Really the only roots have been in the vermiculite. I just threw out a run of clones from it I didn't need. 9 days for roots in the warmer room

Well sorry george... but I think your experience is typical....

I had a challenge....this cloner will outperform any cloning style that isnt plugged in..... and Im sure it outperforms some you do plug in.....

how hard is it...

cloner.... cuttings ....fine vermiculite....a thermometer.... 10-14 days....

voila.....

I've used this method since you started this thread and it's just tooo easy.

Un plugged the bubble cloner and trashed it. I have clones in these ice cube trays with vermic i have a container of just perlite and then a container with perlite and vermiculite.

We'll see. 11 days is the average for me in vermiculite.

Here are a few pics if anyone is interested. Stuff floating in the res is vermiculite. It gets hung on the t shirt scraps when filling the tubes. I'm looking for an end cap for these and will probably use those rubber feet you put on chair legs. Crap on the floor is dog hair lol.

The heat source for this comes from the lights below the middle shelf that are attached to the heatsink-shelf that is made out of a cut piece of floor tile. this directs heat to my cloner and also leaves an airspace under the upper (mom) shelf to keep that cooler. I have been playing with this cab for a month and was using glass for the lights "heat sink" up until the other day. I had it set up like a labyrinth light trap where air flowed across both levels of bulbs through glass, blah blah blah. I kept my lower chamber where the 2 27w bulbs are, at or below ambient temps but had troubles keeping the upper chamber that has only 2@ 13w below 80. Whatever, it now works and keeps me upper 70s on both levels but I had to shove a peice of the bubble insulation under the cloner because it was going over 90 once I went to the tile. With the little bit of insulation it stays mid 80s. The tile also holds heat pretty well when lights are off, which is nice. The res chamber I'm using is actually a slimline water dispenser made to go in the fridge, cut in half.

This cab is 7"x17"x24" and I should be able to stuff 5 moms, a 1/2 gallon-ish lst'd plant, 2 more clones in starter pots, and 12 clones in the cloner. The cab is light tight, and dead silent. I am going to be revising my ventilation and adding a carbon filter though. These plants don't stink in veg but the soil does, and as I obtain more moms I'm sure I'll find some stinkers. Also, with my upper 70's now, come summer I will be struggling with temps again. I'm 8-10 over ambient now and I have no intention of running my AC at 70 all summer!!!

Again, thanks for the inspiration for this cloner. If I can do it, it is easy! Oh, and have you guys tried germing/sprouting seeds in yours? That works too!!!

Jed

As an off-topic aside, the clone standing up is an Apollo 11 and looks to be the Genius pheno based on the zigzag stem. Not bad for only popping 4 seeds! Hopefully its a girl!!

Just for the record, the jurry is still out on this. I had one clone that made it fine but the rest have been struggling. I think the diameter of the tube is too large and possibly the t-shirt on the bottom is allowing for too much water in the medium. They are all rooting but smaller roots and they seem to just stop at a certain point. I am now experimenting with smaller diameter clear tubes and I think that will work better. Just wanted to keep good information out there for you folks. I will report back my finding in a couple of weeks.

I have 5 strains in the walmart cloner now, this is my second run after failed bubble cloner conditions forced to transfer cuttings to another container with perl/vermib

Like I said I've been using this for a couple years.

I I have clones in

1. vermiculite walmart cloner

2. Beer cup with perlite on the bottom and vermiculite on the top with a hole in the side 1 inch up.

3. Clones in straight perlite,

4. Clones in perlite and vermiculite thoroughly mixed with a hole up the side for drainage.

The walmart cloner has turned out mtf, bubbachunk, lvpk consistently, first small root at day 11 and ready to pot up at day 15 or so.

In the tray that it sits in, I have water and some EWC tea I made up. They are staying nice and green in all cloning methods and I spray them twice while they are rooting with EWC. I use vita grow rooting hormone.

I built a bubble cloner a few weeks ago, no matter what I tried to do with the container or the water, I got slime on the roots. I trashed it a few days ago.

I'm anxious to see if any of the other methods improve time but I doubt it. I figure if I keep the reservoir section of these methods no more than in inch up, the moisture and oxygen will be about the same. I expect similar results.

Just for the record, the jury is still out on this.

OK, well this is a cut from the plant that has been giving me the most troubles and these rooted fine after 2 weeks in the larger tubes. I saw the first sign of a root at about 10 days. I think I will like the smaller diameter tubes better, but I will know more in a week or two. I also had a seed germing that was in there for over 3 weeks and wehn I finallypulled that out it had a very well developed root system but nothing hit the side of the tubes. Here are a couple of pics, please forgive the lack of focus on the root shot.

Also, somebody made the suggestion (in this thread I think) of cutting up the bottom of the stem a short ways splitting it in 2 before dunking in the hormone. In 2 side by sides this made rooting faster for me.

This is a little off topic.... but not that far....

Ive been doing some experimentation with air layering with the use of rapid rooters....

One thing you cant do with the Ice Tube cloner is take really large clones....

Using air layering I took a 12 inch clone....

really its not a clone as I think of one.... it was a well developed plant....

I plan to do some more work with air layering..... love the big ass clones....

If you are interested in large clones do a little reseach on air layering....

Yea, I'm with you BR, but like you insinuated with the "being off topic", You're talking apples-oranges. The air layering does provide a clone, but it does take a little longer for the whole process. If you are only taking one clone and you aren't in a hurry, air-layering is probably a good method. I like taking several smaller clones to find a real healthy one to veg, and to get the roots going quick. The WalMart cloner is the best for that situation.

Oh and thanks to whomever had the idea of cutting the thing in half. I really wish I would have thought of that D'OH!

As an aside... Does anyone use H2O2 in their res water to keep the algae growth down? The ONLY thing I don't like about this unit is the algae.....

Peace out peeps! :rasta:

i dont let mine sit in a tub with water for to long, hour max, then i drain, and usally wait a day then flood and drain again

I had to cut it in half at the time since I was in a tiny cabinet ;) , I've since added a second unit and left it full size. The half's are nice to separate strains.

I don't add anything to the water and haven't had any algae. Using the same water in a bubbler ends up with algae.... I dunno :dunno:

very nice. i'm going to go make mine now. thank you!

I dont think I can say it enough....

The system has been worked out....

buy a thermometer as well they have a pet dept ....

around 3 bucks as I recall.....

temps over 80 82-83 is ideal for me....

temps over 80 82-83 is ideal for me....

Compress the vermiculite quite a bit....

let us know how you did on your first batch....

"clones" you know fuck you with your fucking superior attitude I now decided to go with basically the same exact thing which is rockwell cubes sitting in a small hooded container with a base water supply. Tricks or technicques aside its the same basic principle so go fuck off.. you didnt re invent the wheel.

WHOA!!!:hide:

dan42nepa came on board and explained his comment.... dans ok by me....

My team collapsed within the last 10 minutes and gave up 24 points to lose.. I must have drank half a bottle of tequila. I am not usually like that at all. I feel very bad about it.
