I love the hottest peppers!

about keeping chilies - i boilt mine in vinegar with salt and sugar and jarred them covered with the vinegar mix, and they are still good, about 8 months later.

i sterilized masonry jars in presure cooker before i filled them with the boilt mix. its enought o just quickly boil them, no need for a long cooking..

they get a lot like the typical jarred jalapeños in consistency, and on top you can use the vinegar as hotsauce..

peace

My chilli exploits are going well so far, though having a little debate with myself (first sign, I know...) about keeping them outside in the UK.

I have 4 plants wintered from last year, 2x Orange Habanero, 1 Cayenne and 1 Jalapeno. The Cayenne and Jalapeno are doing great, already full of fruit and haven't seemed perturbed about being left out the past week or so. The Habs aren't enjoying it I think, they look healthy enough and aren't showing signs of stress, but are growing very slowly and refusing to set fruit even though I know the flowers are being pollenated (by insects and myself with a clean basting brush)

I have settled on bringing them in a night again to see if anything improves and have my eye on a mini greenhouse to keep them in as I am fairly northern and can't imagine chillies doing too well outdoors here anyway. (last year I kept bringing them in at night, but that was hard work with the few I had then, I now also have about 10 more plants, of 4 different varieties on their way, so minimising labour is a priority!)

I suppose my question is; am I being too impatient with the Habs, seeing as the Cayenne and Jalapeno are doing ok, have I just started leaving the Habs out too soon or would I be best keeping them warmer at night?

I think I'll buy a mini greenhouse anyway, just cos I want one!
I do reckon that should help with my problems, but all thoughts of more experienced UK (or similar climate) growers are most welcome!

Hi guys, I just planted some Habanero, Cayenne, and Tobasco peppers. Hopefully they do good. Do you guys cage yours at all, I've read they can support their own weight. There's a few tomatoes and a basil plant in there. Are nights are still in the upper 40's, should be fine right?

Upper 40's is a little cool for the hot peppers, they tend to like a constant 70+ degree soil. I'll be sprouting my Bhut Jolokias in about 3 weeks to ensure the ground temps don't go below 60.

That answers my question a little aswell, I have struggled to find anything about temp ranges for chilli plants beyond the seedling stage using google, I think a mini greenhouse is the way forward, till then its the nightly exodus into the spare bedroom for them! lol

my chilies and peppers are also starting to flower, even though they are outside in the ground.

for capsicum i supose light hours are ir-relevant for the flowering.

cheesey - as far as i know jalapeño should give fruit after ju7st a few months, as long as there is not too much nitrogen. nitrogen makes the plants grow leafy and tall, but messes up the flowering. if u grow hydro, try giving PK13-14 etc in light doses when the plant is big enough to give fruits.

but im no expert :) just checking a lot of stuff thats possible to find on the internet. :) i had good harvests the last year with my chilies and peppers, but this year i got 20 times more plants, or even more. and i dont want to have to learn by failing :) so i check first. hehe

anyway - reimerseeds has awesome selection of chili seeds, and big packs and cheap too :) for next year i will order - for once the really low dollar is working to my benefit :) half price compared to buy in europe :) !!! awesome !!!!!!! im going to go crazy and buy a rediculous amount of varieties.

peace :D

yeah im going to propably keep seeds too even though im going to have it tough spreading out the different sub species.

apart from the cayenes (20-30plants) and 2 local chili varieties (10x) i got 3 different kinds of sweet peppers (50-60x), and depending on how the seeds are sprouting, a jalapeño hybrid, 1 chinense and 3-4baccatums, in total this far around 20x sprouts :)
