i agree 'pot' and 'dope' along with 'marijuana' are all words with extremely negative connotation (after decades of prohibition era propaganda). as far as i'm concerned we're a civilized people we can use the proper latin word, cannabis, in formal situations. its roots go back as far as any. the u.s. media still uses 'pot' and 'marijuana' in headlines. i noticed the brits use 'dope' in tabloids but mostly call it 'cannabis' now.

I mean its certainly better than opiates. but anything that gets you loaded and you use with a frequency (several times a day) is dope. if you drank beers throughout the day you'd be an alcoholic- and your dope would be beer, and if you toke throughout the day (myself included) your a pothead and your dope is weed.
I'm not telling you what to do, I'm just saying don't lie to yourself. I smoke weed throughout the day almost every day and I have no problem with that and doesn't affect my life in a negative way. But I'm not under any delusion I know exactly what I'm doing. I'm getting loaded every few hours the same way users of various drugs do.
