Sorry about the crap comment. I grow with a 150 so I'll stay out of the way. I'm sure it will depend on several factors. Your hood style will make a difference. With an air cooled hood, you could probably get the lamp a foot or less from the canopy with enough ventilation.

A basic rule of thumb is to hold the back of your hand under the lamp for 60 sec. If you're hand is too hot for comfort, your plants will be too.

disco, all is good! i need that "finger in the armpit" thing every now and then! my flower room is 4'x7' with a ten foot ceiling and the temp with the light on is allways 72-75F and 65-68 nite time temps. light aint air cooled but i think i get the jist of whaty yer sayin'! thanx fer the input!

...without a cool tube; about 16 inches. I keep a steady air flow between the light and the canopy....and try to maintain 78-80 degrees, there.

Not all reflectors are created equal. Some will focus light like a laser; others will smooth it out. The dimpled ones seem to work best.

Another consideration is the growth/flowering stage you're in. Vegging plants will need, and use much more concentrated light than later in flowering. As plants pass peak flowering, they need less and less light to be happy. So many growers waste watts by keeping plants that are advanced in flowering close up under bright lights. They will stay healthier, flower a little longer, and put on more weight if moved away to the edges of the light where it's less intense. I realize this is not 'common' knowlege, but give it a shot, I'll think you'll be convinced.

never heard that!

good stuff guys, thanx! pinball, the chart is great info! 16" is about where my hand is comfy under the light! i also keep air moving under the light and above the canopy and temp is at 72F or so. temp should be about right? theyre comin along nicely but the leaves seem a little light in color.

I second that i think he/she has it a little mixed up i can easily veg under a 42w compact flourescent two plants at three feet but when it come to flowering you need that hps penetration to get that good dense buds with respect of different strains

I disagree about stronger light during vegging.

my tallest plant is about 14" below the light two r at 23' below and a few more go 19 to 21. the plants further from the light have the nicests buds the ones that are closer to the lights arent as tight,i guess you'd say, and are smaller. the tallest one also has the highest ppm runoff.but has the smallest and lightest buds that are forming than all the others and is growing so fast its like its trying to escape the room! any ponderances? i myself have allways heard that you need as much light as possable during the flowering stage from start to finish, but i am going to try a little experiment on my next grow and try out mr.greengene's theory. what the hell,no guts no glory! im in my 28th day of flower and still dont know when i should harvest as no one has answered me on how long it takes red diesel to flower. any body here know by any chance?

There may be something to Mr Greengenes advice. In nature, sunlight gets less intense as summer wanes. The sun is actually farthest away from us on June 21st but the angle gives us the most radiation. As the sun gets closer to earth, the angle changes and we get less radiation. One Dec 21, we're closest to the sun yet receive the least radiation.

If it burns the back of your hand then it will burn the plants!

Use this as a rough guide :D
when in doubt do what he said but there are other things ya can do like add co2 and turn up the heat a lil air cooled hoods get a lil closer if your in soil ya could lift shorter buckets up for a more even canopy for the staggerd height issiue. i thought ya had to be closer than 12 in to get light bleaching though?

from what everyone else says having more intense light in flower produces tighter buds and increased yield. i think this is the advantage over sungrown bud as outdoor usually is much looser and leafier. does this relate to light conditions or something else?
also looking at veg, why would you run a stronger light in veg if a lower wattage light is totally capable of rapid growth while keeping stretch to a minimum.
id like to hear more info from greengenes
