How robust are ipods?

Ipods accept MP3's, I have had two of them now, I find the biggest problem with them is theives.
Damn theives.

They also have their own proprietary format, and I think thats what he was getting at before, but they definatley play mp3's.

Yes they do play MP3s.
Yes they are durable.

Ive beat mine to hell and back and its still cookin. Sure I had to reset it every now and then...but overall its a great investment. Considering you can have your whole music collection at your finger tips and it fits in your pocket....yeah its worth it.

No more flippin through CD cases to find a certain CD whilst running a redlight on the road. Plug it in to the FM adapter and listen to it my truck.

And also the music is cheaper on Itunes in many cases than they are at walmart. I usually pay 9.99$ from itunes for an album where as I would pay 12-13$ at wallys.

Yeah I find they are pretty durable too, except for getting scratches and scuffs, but they dont affect its functionality.

I wouldn't get one.....

I had a Mini, it broke. I then upgraded to a 20 gig. It broke, I had the extended warranty, it got fixed. It then broke again, got fixed. Then it broke again, and got fixed. Then it broke again and got fixed. Then it was declared a lemon and I got a new 30 gig Video for free.

They have good sound quality, are easy to use, but in my experience are not very durable. And I never abused it either. I have yet to have a problem with my 30 gig, but it's only 2 weeks old.

The bottem line, if you get an Ipod make sure you get the extended warranty. But then again, I've heard that about all of apples products.

How can you guys say ipods sound quality is good...bet you use stock earbuds too...

Don't ever listen to CNET, apple pays them.

TheBoss: I highly sugguest you look into the iaudio x5, it sounds like it will suit your needs. It is teflon coated so it is very hard to scratch it. It has no programs it needs to dictate how to put music onto your player, all you do is drag and drop as if it was a transportable disk drive *which it is* It also plays tons of audio formats so you have tons of choices. Only problem with the X5 is people have problems with the joystick stop working but it is not common, and the full length battery time slowly dies which is why I recommend the X5L which has no cases reported of this and it already has 20 something hours.

i'd be inclined to follow saix advice,

that said, i've no intention of getting a stand-alone mp3 player,
i've got a cd-mp3 which is fine for now.
might have a look at the nokia n91 when it comes out though - 4gb mp3 player within the phone.
..an ipod killer perhaps

I once wanted a mp3/cd player, I really liked the iriver slimx, incredibly thin! Only problem was that I like having my whole music collection on the go which is why I like DAPs and not flash players or cd players, even though mp3/cd players hold a ton. I kind of wanted a minidisc player also since I heard their sound quality is beyond amazing!

There will never be a thing called an Ipod killer because their marketing is just beyond everyone else and it is to far in development.

Ipods don't even have a built in radio or a line in recorder...

TheBoss: The fact that you are even asking this kind of question to begin with means you are beyond the thinking capabilities of ipod users and deserve something betteer! Ipod users don't want to think *even though Itunes has to be the most troublesome program yet they think it is the holy grail...* and they really don't care how they listen to their music/ how it sounds as long as their music is there.

The X5 interface is exactly like a computer, folders inside folders, and you organize it the way you want it. I can answer any questions you have on the X5 on here or in a PM if you want. I don't have experience with the Zen Vision:M, but I heard it is amazing too! People on Iaudiophile have actually switched to it because they wanted ID3 Tags and gapless playback.

I know Ipod has rockbox *firmware* and so does the X5, so by voiding the warrenty you can have id3 tags and gapless.

I bought my 30 g ipod video like a month ago and love it. Its sweet being able to watch videos on it too...good sound quality. I couldn't handle listening to the radio anymore or the mini discs I had mad 4 years earlier.

Now it'll probably shit the bed on me now since I said I liked it.

I use a 30 gig creative zen vision m. amazing screen and sound (2x the # of colors of the ipod video and to many people's ears..better sounding), good battery life (kicks the ipods ass) and a much easier to use interface in many people's opinions.

it plays WMAs and MP3s and a lot of videos can transfer right onto it without conversion (AVIs, WMVs, etc). You don't have to convert to MP4 like you do with the Ipods. Best part is...NO ITUNES! :D

^^ you dont *need* i tunes for ipod, there are several good 3rd party softwares out there

yea and there are also several other better mp3 players that dont dictate your music like North Korea.

Glock I'm very glad you own a Zen Vision:M and put your input in.

Ipod = AOL

When will you upgrade?

I love my Zen Vision: M. I'd like to upgrade to the 60 gig version though. Creative's customer support kicks ass too. My friend cracked the screen on his player and they let him trade up to a newer model for cheap. Try that with Apple.

Another advantage of buying a Creative player is that the AC adapter comes with it. Ipods don't come with AC adapters. WTF is up with that?!

ipods are quite fragile if you drop it at a certain angle.. a long time ago i had a 20g fell from my desk.. about 3 feet and the screen broke. i could still play music, but it was pretty pointless without a screen.

a few weeks later i dropped it in the toilet(in my defense, i was peaking on shrooms...) and that totally killed it. they are great gadgets IMO, but you know, don't play catch with it. :)

from my experience I would reccomend AGAINST and ipod video, but would strongly reccomend a 4th or 3rd generation ipod. I've gone through TWO ipod videos before I gave up on them and went back to my 3G ipod

The 3G ipod has been dropped hundreds of times, spent two summers at the beach, been raining on, plenty of beer has been spilled on it, travelled halfway across the world and still works flawlessly

I download it for free and call it.... are you ready? "Record companies contributing to the less fortunate"

I use the I River H340 40Gb, much better than any Ipod imho, accepts all file types, colour screen, u can use a program to encode videos and films to play on it, see photos, and basically it just acts as an external hard drive, u just browse through it like windows explorer, and transferring to/from your pc is as easy as drag n drop, no bullshittin around with ITunes or anything of the kind. Its a bit cheaper than the equiv capacity Ipod video. You can also store any file you want on it like a usb key, even if it wont play it (documents, programmes, anything).
I dont know about droppin it tho, ive never let it happen yet and hopefully never will... I use it all the time, got over 1 month of music on that thing, battery life is very good too. Sound quality imo is better than an ipod, and they come with descent quality in-ear headphones.
You should definitely shop around Boss, im sure you can find something better than an ipod for your bucks

Peace

Comments like this are no longer needed! The conversation has changed directions for the better!

I'm glad to finally be in a place where people arn't zombies to stupid things and actually do research.

Zombies to stupid things? Just who the fuck are you to determine what I'm a zombie to? I will spend my hard earned money on whatever the fuck I want to. If I want to buy an iPod and use iTunes, I will...

You ask how I can say sound quality is good? Because it is good. I never said it sounded like a choir of angels from heaven.

The guy asked if iPods were durable, and Zilaniz answered with his experience on this subject. How was this comment not needed?

It's your bullshit that this site does not need.
