Hey can someone help me... I'm thinkin of getting an iPod (5g) and I'm just wondering, if I drop it, how tough is it... will it just die on me or are they fairly tough little things.

Thanks

Personally, I have dropped it from a 3 foot high desk, and all I got were scratches.

I have seen other "stories" about iPods slipping out of people's pockets and hitting the ground, when all that happened were a few scratches.

I would say be extra careful with your iPod when the Hard Drive is spinning (in other words: DO NOT DROP!!). You can hear the Hard Drive spinning in a quiet room. Usually, it spins when a fresh load of songs is carried to the RAM. You can feel the Hard Drive shuting down about 5 to 7 seconds into the song.

If you want to get a case or something to keep the iPod from those prominent scratches, go to www.everythingipod.com and get one of those thick coverings. I haven't tried out anything from their site, but the site and it's products look impressive.

Enjoy the iPod!

Dude, This iPod has been thru hell!!!

Let's see, I have dropped this iPod about..... 20 times!!!
Look at all the scrathes!!!

Oh, I forgot one key thing... it didn't skip at all when it was dropped!!!;)

I had to shrink the photo to get it to fit.

WHO SAID THAT!? F!!K them. You can't snap an iPod in half. They have to be making that up, unless they went and purposely dropped it, hit it, whatever...ƒ!!!!!g retards...

xrhajj, that is one ƒ*cked up iPod, worse than mine! :D

Enjoy the iPod purchase! And pardon my language, guy/gal. :p

I tried to put the original photo, but it was too big, Macrumors wouldn't let me upload it!! Ill make it a little bigger.

At any rate, I advise you to get a replacement plan on it!!

I purchased mine from Compusa and I got the replacement plan which was only $30!! That's why I don't care if it (or will)breaks, cause I'll get a new one!;)

You know, you can edit the photo in Photoshop and save just the iPod. Then export as a smaller file-sized JPEG.

Or, you could go into Appleworks and do the same, but it would take longer. You would have to insert the photo into a painting doc, copy just the iPod to a drawings doc and export it as a JPEG the same way.

If you don't have either, then I pity you.  :p

my ipod has survivde throws, falls, being stepped on, and i've even attempted to pull it in half unsuccesfully (how are the two pieces joined by the way) all my friends say it's the sturdiest piece of tech they've ever seen in such a tiny package (my roomates gf broke her elph by dropping it and they're practically the same size...but elph is 10x more complex technically i guess) to sum it all up they're tough as a brick.

If you want to pull it apart just get a butterknife in where the plastic and metal meets it will snap off and on again.

My ipod has been dropped kicked dropkicked you name it never skipped, never. And it still works like a charm even after taking it apart and putting it back together, just to see what was in there.

after working about 12 hours straight on a web project i got into my friend's car and slammed the door on my ipod

it didn't work after that at all (got really really hot when it tried to turn on and made bad noises)

i took it apart and fiddled around for a bit and then finally just banged the dent out and requested a replacement from apple... i was worried they wouldn't accept it or fix it but apple sent a box out the next day and sent a new 5 gig ipod out the very next day after that

i counted myself as lucky.

moral of the story: don't put ipods in large coats in the winter and close doors on them, other than that ipods are very strong :)

Don't buy an iPod.

Their battery life is 18 months, you must convert all music files into their proprietary format (IOW, no mp3 or wma files), and they are overpriced. You also have to deal with that stupid iTunes and Digital Rights Management bull**** that iPod forces upon you.

Here are some other, less expensive options that have the same if not more features:

60-gig mp3 and video player- $300

Flash-based player for $130

30 gig player for less than $250

Ultimately, you can look around on cnet.com for dozens of other manufacturers that offer great prducts with better functionality and lower prices than the iPod.

Fuck Apple.

Ipods are all hype IMO.

Get another less flimsy, more user friendly mp3 player for alot cheaper.

i like my nano.. i think itunes sucks ass tho with the naming and everything and it can be difficult to get the ipod to organize everything the way you want it. no biggie tho.. i just have a 2 gig nano so i throw new albums on it everyday and use the random feature to play songs. i have about 45000 songs on my hard drive.. lots of shit to choose from.

on a side note i highly recommend a raid array setup for your home pc hard disks. my drives back themselves up onto each other.

its pretty solid.. i have some swirling on the finish even tho i leave it in the leather sleeve most of the time.. haven't dropped it on anything other than carpet and no problems as of yet.

i just really like how small and sleek it is.

ipods are so incredibly bad, especially in the sound area! I love it when people listen to my mp3 player and ask why mine sounds so much better.

Best so far are the Iaudio X5 *i perfer the X5L version since it has an incredibly long battery life* and the Zen Vision M.

those 2 hands down are the most amazing players on the market!

Cowon is introducing 4 new players this month, so there maybe an x5 succesor, even though it is rumored that cowon has gone to flash players only, either way the X5 rapes face like ace a base.

as far as MP3 players go I don't have time to fuckin dittle with one of those high priced toys, so I got a cheap ass one that does what it needs to, which is play MP3s of my choice while I work out, then its promptly thrown in a drawer until next time.

I've got a Sony AM/FM/TV/WB/Cassette player. For being about 5 years old, and being dropped countless times, it still runs like new, never eaten a tape, gets a signal better than any other radio in the house (or the car) Have something like 25 stations programmed on FM, around 6 on AM, 5 on TV, 2 on WB, and I've still got around 12 station spaces available (stores 60 in memory)

I love this thing, I LOVE flipping through radio stations, and I'll never be suckered into buying one of those friggin' overpriced ipod/mp3 "Mix Boxes" when I can make a mix cassette just as easily. Been doing it for years (with the same cassettes as I started with, and have a stockpile of blanks) and plan to keep doing that.

The only fancy shit I like is digital cameras/camcorders, HOWEVER, I still transferred my digital home vids to VHS. I grew up with VHS tapes & camcorders, and even though they're practically extinct now, I'll still put my home videos on VHS tapes. Someday I'll back them up to DVDs for when VCRs no longer exist, but I like the nostalgia much more than digital convenience.

ive dropped my 30 gig video and the center buton went down and got stuck under the clickwheel part. it scared the shit out of me but with a lil fiddliling the button popped back into its propper place and workded just like new... i got a clear case and it keeps the surface scratches away.

@ sproutco , okey dokey we're buds, lets pat each other on the back

@krustytheclown, IPODS DONT ACCEPT MP3S???? Whoooaaa, that sucks

"You also have to deal with that stupid iTunes and Digital Rights Management bull**** that iPod forces upon you."

WHats that all about?

"Ultimately, you can look around on cnet.com for dozens of other manufacturers that offer great prducts with better functionality and lower prices than the iPod."

Yeah the reason i wanted apple is because of their "scrolling" tho songs feature...

Can i buy Creative "Zen" MP3 player? No fancy scrolling there but seems solid quality?

But yeah can someone tell me more about ipods and why you cant have mp3s? What do you have to do, covert mp3s into THEIR format or what?

"I dropped my ipod and the nano fell off, now it hurts everytime I MP3."

ROFLMAO!!

"Best so far are the Iaudio X5 *i perfer the X5L version since it has an incredibly long battery life* and the Zen Vision M."

Iaudio? i will check it out
