How many plants do you need to maintain a variety without inbreeding depression?

It helps to create multiple lines so you can cross them after a while.

If you have access to the original genetics it's much easier to just add maybe 5% of them to your lines to get some
new blood without diluting things too much in your breeding stock. Even just 1 plant from the original stock could
help especially if it's a Landrace created by open pollination that you're trying to save.

Thanks again to all for the great info - am still digesting the stuff about both RRS and bonsai sultan method. And am aiming for maintaining the landraces I grow through using as many males as possible each round and keeping multiple lines going. Then as troutman says I can recombine at some future stage if I want to mix things up.

Might make a new thread once I start on the RRS project - am thinking of using a homemade polyhybrid as the base of each line - tho the selection will depend on my current and next grows - there are still lots of strains that I have seed for but havent tried yet...

Currently thinking I should try to keep very different plants on the A and B lines - maybe Highland Thai x (Purple Bud x Blueberry) as A, and Johaar x Nitro Lemon Haze as B.

All you essentially need are two very stable and proven parents. From there you can back cross it back to the mom in the f2 and f3 generations without loss of vigor in my experience. Some genepool will degrade but for the most part it’s negligible.
