I would have to say based to looking just at this thread that ther are two kinds of tails , ones that are genetic, and the whole bud is clusters of tails , or ones that get stressed by heat /light into foxtailin , Im no expert ? what u guys think bout dat ?

HEAT. been running OG kush and GSC pretty much all year.....just had a hot run where temps spiked to 85ish around week week 3-5....and everything pushed out some foxtails. doesnt look bad there is still frost on the nugs, and temps dropped back down from week 5-8 so its starting to balance out...

my Sour D clone foxtailed much tougher than any of the GSC or OG kush though.

So, what is the effect of foxtailing on the end product? Does it affect smoke or is it just aesthetic?

The foxtailing bud tip is more likely to break off in the bag.

I've had distinctive foxtailing with Haze-NL crosses, and loved that bud.

Of course it can work out that 1 or 2 or however many foxtails can also go into a joint :woohoo:

I've never understood how people get their buds to foxtail. Its looks unreal.

Is it the genetics that get em like that?

Any help would be great.

just OGKB Bro, added Rasta juice helps also.

Ok, thanks. I was wondering because I've got a couple Jack Herer and a pair of mighty grape in flower and one of each is doing it and I was wondering if it was a problem such as light leak etc or if it was a unicorn. I remember reading an agri paper talking about how what we see as "ugly vs ideal produce" often had no relation to the plants idea of optimal.

Foxtailing is be the result of different stresses in your grow environment or the strains genetic traits. One way they are formed is from an interrupted dark cycle. When they are a result of this they will almost always be accompanied by deformed leaf structures...like the last pic Chunkypigs posted.

Second is by increasing temps during mid-late flower. The heat causes the flower to almost totally abandon the flower that was forming when the plant experienced the heat stress and then starts to put forth new growth...fox tails.

Lastly, you can chemically stress your plant with certain bloom boosters to cause the foxtailing. H&G's shooting powder is the best example of this IMO. I am not a fan of the look of the foxtail and as such do not use shooting powder by H&G. Other bulking powders can produce a similar effect w?out the long ugly look of the foxtail. MOAB and Big Up powder are 2 examples of these. They will tend to produce a more "clump like" formation of bud...I call it cauliflowering...and it looks better.

The first 2 causes will usually go hand in hand with finding a seeded crop, however with the chemically induced method you are way less likely to see any nanners in your crop!
