How do you germ your seeds?

I'm curious to know how you folks germ your seeds, and what your success rate is.

I wrap mine in a paper towel or a soft rag, thoroughly wet it, press out the excess water & set the "bundle" up top the water heater :D
Constant warmth, re-wet once a day if needed, works like a charm.

My germ rate this way is about 90%, sometimes I have to help them along by cracking the seeds open a bit further, but it's a pretty good turn out. Usually takes within 4 or 5 days at the most, some seeds take longer than others. My quickest seeds pop in a day, most take about 3, the stallers take 4-5. I've noticed if they don't germ after 5 days, they don't germ at all.

i do the paper towel/toilet paper method, throw in a bag, seal, and put in my 80 degree grow chamber. all popped within 2 days...quickest one last time was 22 hours....

I hate that paper towel rubbish. I use 100% perlite. A 3" container filled with perlite with a 1/2" to an 1" of water standing in the bottom of the container. The seeds are only buried 1/4"-1/2" deep. They germ sprout and move along. I can stick them into soil or hydro. No worries about the seeds drying out. I'm a cheater too. I presoak the seeds for 12 hrs at least in seaweed. I usually get 9 or 10 out of 10. I also get 7-8 out of 10 females for some reason. I'm not sure why though. It may be the strains.

LOL GANTZ!!!! those seeds are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo germinated!!!! the roots on those babies are like 8" long !!!!!

I just use two paper towels, soak them, squeeze the water out, stick the seeds on there and put the other layer of towel over them, then put them on a plate and then in a plastic bag on my bookshelf for 4 -5 days, i usually have a 95% germ rate, i only think ive lost 1 maybe 2 our of the 40 - 50 ive germed.

good luck!

I do exactly as gantz, standing water in the tupperware or bag will delay or stop germinating altogether,Always drain out all the excess standing water before closing the tupperware.I'll get the paper towel drenched, then with the tupperware tilted use my fingertips to make little "air pockets" around each seed all the time draining excess standing water from the bottom of the tupperware

i read that putting the seeds in the fridge for 24hrs, then let them get to room temp & then germ, it will help the process. any truth too that?

I keep germing, and growing for that matter, as simple as possible. here is my germing in a few easy steps.

1. Walk into kitchen

2. Open up cabinet and get a glass

3. Fill glass with water

4. throw beans in glass

5. put glass back in cabinet

6. walk away and leave em alone

7. after 24-48 hours check em. they shoudl have tails

8. Place in dirt and move on with your life. It aint rocket science. its a weed it wants to grow

^ what he said, plus sometimes if it's really cold i might heat the glass up a bit say on top of yer modem or sumtin. I get close to 100% germ everytime.

It's defo not rocket science and should be kept as simple as possible

the seeds seem to have germination tied to environmental factors that the seeds would be subject to in the great outdoors..

putting the seeds in the fridge simulates the cold winter temps the seeds go through..

taking them out shows the seeds an abrupt raising of temp.. like a spring thaw type thing..

some seeds seem to be acclimated to their monsoon type environments where heavy rains will continue for a long period of time and then it will dry up.. that is why soaking in water for a few days.. some seeds will already crack.. some will only be softer and waiting for the rains to end before they open up.. because their dna knows they will drown if the germ during the rains..

all very interesting imo..

Mr Nevermind, exactly!!!

its just a weed. i wants to grow. All you need is a little light and water and it'll take off. I see people messing with germing and seedlings to much. its a new grower mistake to pay to much attention to germing and seedlings. Just leave em alone. they will grow. its when people fuck with things to much is when new gorwers end up osting in the infirmary with pics of jacked up seedlings. If you leave em alone they are fine. if you mess with nutes and check em every 2 hours your gonna kill em. Just leave em alone and they will do their magic

jiffy-7 pellets, put the seed in the middle and pour water, it sprouts and when the roots stick out the side of the jiffy pellet its time to transplant, i get 99% success rate, specially when using quality seeds.

4 pieces of paper towels, placed in a small tupperware container on my cable box. About 90% success for the most part.

1. Fill small peat pot with MG seed starter soil. Packed in.

2. Press a 3/4 inch hole with an unsharpened pencil.

3. Drop in seed and lightly sift soil into the hole to fill. Press very lightly

4. Place under 50 watts of floros at 80 degrees and mist with a spray bottle to keep the top soil damp. Usually 5 or so sprays two or three a day. No more than damp.

This method usually has the seedlings above ground at 72 hrs and nearly a 100 percent rate.

Putting seeds in a glass of water may work for some folks with some seeds, but if I spend 15 dollars a seed,I want to make sure they pop .I personally have had rotten luck just putting them in water,I've had rotten luck trying to do the same with cuts for that matter lol, bottom line is there are so many different ways, see which works best for you.Whatever you choose, refrigeration for 24-48 hours is always an excellent idea

I have used that method for over 5 years with 100% success . The cost of beans dont matter when germing. A seed is a seed wether it cost you $1 or $100 its still a seed. The seed dont know how much it costs , it just wants to grow. I have spent money on pricey beans as well and used that method with 100% success.

I couldnt imagine how stickin em in the fridge could help since herb usually sprouts when its warm out. Its a safety mechanism. If its cold out it wont sprout since the cold can kill it. It sprouts when its warm cuz the seed knows it can survive in warm weather and warm weter is its indication to sprout and grow. in nature when is the last time you say seeds go to 50 degrees for 2 days before they sprout? you dont. if it was 50 degrees the seed would do its best not to pop. The glass method works well and keeps it simple. All that fridge stuff is honestly things people have thought of cuz they think they are geniuses . But honestly growing herb is one of the easiest things you can do and to make extra steps in it and freezing em or whatever is wasting time.

Give em water and step away from the seed.

I was wondering, when you're germinating seeds, could you germ faster with a growth suppliment? Would that even work for seeds? I know they work well for established plants, but I was wondering about whether that could be used for germinating seeds as well.
