homemade cab plans

The amount of wood (particle board) needed for a 2'd x 3'w x 6'h cab is around $15 at HD. A LOT cheaper than a mill's pride or closetmaid cab of the same size. Only thing is, I'm not sure how you'd go about actually building it. I was thinking about maybe just screwing/nailing a bunch segments of 2''x2'' beams on the edge of each of the 6 sides and then maybe just connecting them together with those screw on metal brackets. And ideas?

Just an suggestion, I would use 2"x4" for the beams as it would add alot more support and sturdiness to the frame. As for connecting them 3" coarse threaded screws will do the trick. The metal brackets is a great idea. they would additional support too as that would be my main concern because of how heavy particle board is. Hope that helps some.

Edit: Better yet, here is an old tutorial salvaged from OG. Just modify the design to fit your dimensions.

Think of the amount of labor involved in building a decent quality one, especially if you're having to ask questions on how to put the boards together.

Also keep in mind that the Mills Pride cabinets can easily be run in stealth mode, while your homemade one may take quite a bit of external work to make it blend in (if that's of concern at all).

Then again, a real simple plywood / particle board box with a hinge opening probably won't run too much more than $25, compared to the $120 or so for a C24.

IMHO, anyways.

That is a REALLY good cab design, SO simple, yet so solid and sturdy, thanks for the link.

This is how much it to costs to build a 2' x 3' 6' cab using that same method.

particle board: $7 a sheet, so it'd be about $15-$16 for 2 after tax. Add $10 for plywood is you'd rather use that.

2x4's: $2.50 a piece, so $5 total

Various screws,a box of nails, some small metal hinges, and a magnetic latch to keep the door shut, $6 total

vent grill: $5 a piece, so $10 total

Can of white paint: $5

All in all, it costs $41, for a complete cab.

Including the ballast (raw ballast sunmaster kit: $45 on ebay) , bulb, stanley fan, scrubber, and soil mix it costs out to about $300-$325 total. And that's includign some tools you may need to buy like a circular drill bit for holes. The whole "system" only like $100 more than just the mill pride cab alone.
