I’ve set up this thread to journal my first serious grow. I’ve smoked (almost exclusively swag) for the past 12 years, at times heavily with some breaks in between. I’ve recently been re-introduced to the wonders of weed through a two week trip in Amsterdam and through a friend who has secured me some of the finest smoke I’ve ever had for very reasonable prices (several different strong strains). His service and growing has inspired me and given me the itch to try it again. I tried growing weed several times through high school and college. Most attempts involved bag seed and a shop light and were aborted because of basically no progress and frustration of not being able to effectively manage the progress without a boatload of cash and space.

Now, I’ve got a little money and some space and have decided to do it for real. I’ve spent about $1500 on gear and supplies so far – you budget for a light and a carbon scrubber but then you don’t account for all the little expensive things you need to set up a grow space (it really adds up). Also, I had no idea how big most of this equipment is in real life. I got one of the smallest can filters and aircooled hoods I could find but they both seem huge! [I see “computer case” grow threads now and just can’t comprehend how that would work!] I know this sounds like a lot of money but it’s worth it for the thought of never buying again (some high end strains are $1500 for a qp!) and for the thought that the better set up I got will allow for better product in a more secure environment, perpetually.

Anyway, here’s what I am running on this grow:

Veg/Flower Room: Homebox XL

Lighting: SunSystem I 600w HPS

Yield Master 4 Air Cooled Reflector
Hortilux Enhanced HPS Bulb

Ventilation: Eco Plus Carbonaire 4" Filter
Eco Plus 4" Inline Fan (pulling from light into filter)
Connected with 4” Flexible Duct

Automation: Graslin 15amp Grounded Timer
Digital Thermometer/Hygrometer

Seedling/Cloning: 10” x 20” Propagation Tray with Clear Dome
Seedling Heat Mat 10” x 20”
Rapid Rooters

Medium: Soil: Organic mix/Perlite/Jiffy Mix/Potting Soil

Nutes: Pure Blend Grow and Bloom

On 1/17 I put 7 feminized Black Jack beans (Black Domina x Jack Herer by Sweet Seeds), 5 feminized SourNL* x Haze beans (Female Seeds), and 5 GSA SourNLX* (“Sour” NL x WW(?)) freebies into rapid rooters in a clear dome with a heat mat under. On 1/19 I put 10 Master Kush (Aghani x Skunk by Nirvana Seeds) in a shot glass of water overnight. The next day the Master Kush beans went between wet paper towels on a glass plate in the dome with the rapid rooters. By 1/21 6 of 7 Jack Blacks had sprouted or formed a seedling, 4 of 5 SourNL x Hazes sprouted, and 4 of 5 SourNLX sprouted. Also, at this time all 10 of the Master Kush had popped and shown 1-2 cm taproots.

*As an aside, I really doubt the voracity of these “sour” NL strains. Apparently, they contain no Sour Diesel or SD-linked strain but are products of a particularly “sour” NL cut. To me this sounds like typical bandwagon jumping given the NYCD/ECSD popularity. However, we’ll see by the end of the grow if these stand up at all to the established “sour” strains.

So, on 1/21 I placed all the Master Kush sprouts in rapid rooters and proceeded to pot all the beans listed above that had germed (including the Master Kushs now in their rooters). I put the rooters in 6” pots (roughly 1.5 liter) with the soil mix listed above. The pots went on small window trays that held three pots.

All together I had 24 potted sprouts/germed beans. I figure in the best case, 10 of the plants will be viable females. Of the other 14 I hope for a 50% female rate, giving me a total of 17 buddable plants. Assuming 4-5 more are culled for whatever reason in the growing process, I hope to have at least 12 viable females. I am hoping to get at least ½ oz per plant on this run. That would leave me with 6 zips of various strains and some nice trim – this should be enough to last me the rest of the year comfortably. Any thing else is gravy.

After the rooters were potted, they went into the homebox. The homebox is very cool but is a bit of a bitch to set up, especially if you’re like me and get frustrated when putting together grills, etc. The cover is very hard to get over the frame if you’re like me and don’t zip up the sides before trying to secure the top (the instructions don’t make this clear). While the material and zippers appear solid I did pull a rather large rip in the top of the fabric. The material is strong, but no material is probably strong enough with people manically trying to pull the fabric on with all their weight. Needless to say, I found a large black vinyl grill cover that can cover the top. I’ll probably patch this anyway with duct tape earlier. There’s also some other small light entry points around the tent that I intend to patch up this weekend.

Once in the homebox, the young tings were given their first real light in the form of 2 x 100w CFLs suspended from the homebox ceiling by their cords. These barely covered the plants but gave them a little warm up while I arranged my hps set up. I watered the new pots fairly well (I need a waterer as I am basically dousing the little guys now). The next morning (1/22) the plants were doing ok and I gave them a tiny bit more water. The evening of the 22nd I put together the aircooled reflector. For now, I just connected this to a hose running out of the light in the homebox into the blower listed above just blowing out in the (unfinished) room, as the plants are so small. The can filter (sitting out side of the tent) will be connected to the blower in the next week or so.

On the morning of the 23rd I watered a bit and the heat seems ok. This evening on the 24th I watered a wee bit and heat levels seem ok – a little warmer but that’s probably related to the weather being a little warmer outside (the space is unconditioned). On the 26th I gave a little more water and rotated the pots around the space. Today, I've got 24 3" to 6" seedlings some starting their second leaf sets. I have them on 20/4 right now and will probably keep them there for at least another two weeks. I am awaiting receipt of my pure blend ferts and will start that regimen within the next two weeks. I have read a lot about the 12/12 from seed method and while I’m not ready to go there yet (need to patch light leaks/monitor temp levels) I do intend to start flowering no later than three weeks of today. I understand the sacrifice in yield but I simply won’t have room for 13-24 trees or big bushes. I would rather harvest a load of spears a few weeks earlier – again, I don’t have huge aspirations for yield. My goal is to keep them small by going no bigger than 2 gallon pots, transplanting when going into flower. This round is all about “getting my feet wet” and if things go well I’ll keep clones for another, more serious run after this one.

I’ve already started looking into a hyrdo set up to start any clones taken from this run and would like a little help on an easy hydro set up if anyone has pointers (I’m looking at the various kits now).

I’ve stocked away some seeds and have Wonder Diesel and a host of other Nirvana and White Label strains to grow out after this, in addition to any keeper clones from this run.

Well, that should be the basics covered. I’ll be updating this and posting some pics over the next couple of weeks as things get more interesting. Feel free to comment as you see fit.

ok, pics are coming soon i promise -- still pretty boring in there

The plants are basically 2 weeks from seed and are now between 4 and 7 inches tall and appear to be doing nicely under the 600 watter. Temps are good, nice and cool but not cold. I have not checked with the temp meter yet out of laziness and because the temps just feel ok. All are working on their second set of leaves or are close. Most of the JBs and NLs are spreading out nicely. The MK are coming along but are about and inch shorter and smaller on average. I do notice that the folliage is particularly light green -- not yellow but getting there. Tonight (31st) I gave a good watering with distilled water with 1 tbs per gallon of PB Grow.

This is their first dose of nutes and I am hoping this brings in some vigor and holds back any yellowing. I assume my dose is light given that it suggests 1-3 tbs per gallon. We'll know in a few days how they are taking the nutes. By this time next week, assuming they respond well to the PB I am going to give one more dose of PB (1.5 tbs if they like it) with a good watering. After that, they are going 12/12. This will be three weeks of veg lighting from seed prior to flowering, I figure this will be a nice compromise between the traditional veg regimen and the 12/12 from seed sog method I have read so much about.

From there, the plan is to continue the PB grow over the next two weeks and phase in gradually the PB Bloom ferts after that two week period (three weeks from now). Hopefully, I'll know sex on all the plants by then and we will be in flower on 13 to 20 or so plants, depending on luck. I still have not patched the various light entries noted above or the tear in the roof (other than the grill cover covering it). Instead of trying to make the HB completely light proof, which would be possible but not 100%, I am simply going to black out the room the box is in with landscape fabric (it's an unfinished space). I figure that plus the box itself will keep everything good and dark.

One bad turn today is I dropped a pot with a plant while looking at it. The plant was shaken up pretty good and one of the first real leaves was taken completely off and the plant was otherwise pretty mangled. I am leaving it for now as it looks like it has a reasonable chance of making it -- we'll see.

I'm hoping the additional week or so in veg that I am planning to do (in lieu of a 2 week veg) will payoff in better yeild -- I have way too many soil plants for my space so smaller yield per plant is not a major concern. As I said before, 1/2 oz per plant will give me at least 6 oz. An oz or more per plant will give me nearly a lb. (!!!) I smoke now about a half or a little more oz per month, which feels pretty heavy to me, so I like these numbers.

Before going into flower I will definitely post a final veg pic. It will probably be pretty pathetic if these ferts don't help a great deal. I am hoping the plants are creating strong root systems and that will pay off in heavier growth later (optimist).

Thanks for reading.

i'm looking forward to this grow
i've got the black jack and sour nlx in my seed stash ,at GSA they say that particular sour nlx is a cross with sour diesel and some current 'super' nl cut
they do say it is a bit variable with mostly nl phenos

thanks for watching flipjack. good info about the "Sour" NLX -- had not heard that it was supposed to have real sour deez in it. These seeds appeared to have small bits of shake in the little baggie and were labeled by hand. While I understand seeds could have some plant material from breeding, I am wondering whether these are what they say they are or if I got "bagseed surprise" from the alien. Either way they were free.

Fed the girls (?) again on Saturday, again giving 1 tbs of PB Grow per gallon of distilled water. I also moved the lights up a few inches to give them some room to stretch. So far so good, temps still seem ok if not a little cool, nice and breezy in the tent.

Noticed what I thought might be a little funk smell in the room the other day. I couldn't tell if it was my smoking earlier or the plants but I hooked up the carbon scrubber regardless. Today, I peeked my head in and was greeted by a nice immature funky ganja smell -- woo hoo! The plants are spreading out (working on the third set now), not necesarily growing up but the progress looks good, I notice a little new growth each time I check -- so at least we're moving forward. Even the mangled girl appears to be making a comeback with some new shoots. I am surprised so far by the very tight internode spacing, maybe this has to do with the HID light or maybe it's genetics -- certainly an improvement over the stretchy asses I grew before.

I have 1g and 3g pots coming. The plan now is to transfer to 1g this week, give another week. Then 12/12. And then in the 3g in the second week of flower (I am taking here, liberally, from BOG's methods in his book). I am hoping the transplanting will benefit overall yield. Hopefully, I'll know most plants' sex before the 3g transplant so I'll save some space in the room. Most of the plants are showing what looks to be female pre-flowers (no balls yet) but I am still not ready to make the call on sex.

Will get some pictures up soon (yeah yeah) -- would have today but forgot my camera when at the grow. Right now not that interesting anyway, just 24 relatively healthy looking small plants :>

I'm pretty sure SourNLX is Sour Turbo x NLX. NLX is White Widow x Haze and is also available from GSA. I have three just started and I have a pack of SourNLX from my last order too. I also have SourJack freebies from GSa from a previous order an GSa told me that is Sour Turbo x Jack Herer so that's why I reckon SourNLX is Sour Turbo x NLX.

Looking forward to seeing your SourNLX, might pop some of mine soon.

hello order :joint:
very interested to see how you do in one of those grow huts, the XL $500.00 dollar is a perfect size......

i was wanting to get one for flowering and put two 400w in there, and also pick up the smaller one to use as a vegg chamber with a T5 430w system in there....

do you show pic's? if so would love to see yours set up with lights mounted and ready to roll....

how are you able to get a filter in one of those??....
peace bro :chin:

ok, update is way overdue -- but here it is

I kept the plants vegging through early february and noticed about half the crop was really looking slow and straggly, so -- needing to keep space in the box -- I gave the lazy asses the boot

after that, I was left with 13 decent looking specimens from the various strains I had put in. I continued to veg those and then put them into three gallon pots around feb. 12 using the same soil/perlite mix. At this time I hit them with some superthrive and added botanicare sweet and cal/mag + to the pure blend grow. I ended up flipping to 12/12 on Feb. 19. Thus, the plants did end up getting the full 4 week veg period, despite my earlier thoughts about going 12/12 sooner.

Within a week and a half 5 males (of the 13 remaining) made them selves known. As I have no plans to breed, those were cut promptly. As such, I was left with 8 females flowering, including one or two of each strain. This reduction was good as it made for some much needed room -- the plants had at least doubled in size and width by this time. From this point on I have been feeding moderately with PB Bloom, Sweet, and Cal/Mag and watering about 1.2 times a week.

As of today, we are at one month flowering. I have to say I am pretty pleased at this point, no matter how much I fuck things up from this point I know I will have at least some buds from this effort. However, by the looks of things the 6-8 ounce mark is definitely reachable, depending on how these plants fill out. The bud sites on these plants are expanding and developing almost daily, and I can already see where rather sizeable colas are forming.

yes, one 600 watt is a little underpowered for the homebox xl, however, it's quiet and pretty efficient and easy to cool. At this point I'd continue with this set up for convenience over a few more ounces in the final harvest.

one thing I have learned this far is that growing more than a couple of plants can be hard work. by hard I mean strategically and sometimes physically hard. when you add in work/travel/visitors it can be downright difficult. growing your own will get you weed much cheaper than dealer-bought weed (in the long run) and weed that is typically better than what's out there but it does not come without a lot of work and effort.

anyway, on to the picture show (text describes pic below it):

First is a view from outside the old HB

then, the view once inside (I have since re-arranged and cleaned out the inside)

here is plant a -- a master kush

next up is plant b -- sournlx

plant f is a very vigorous black jack

plant g is a teeny runt black jack, I was going to pitch it but kept it as sort of a decoration and let it veg out in my kitchen for about a month. But, I ended up throwing it into the flower room and it kept n the back. I transplanted this one about 2 weeks after the others. I keep it around for team morale.

plant H is a very hazey looking sournl x haze, this plant is the biggest one I have and has the most sativa structure (the others all have hybrid traits). I can tell by the bud structure that this one's going to take the longest, which could be a waiting game

next up are some group shots outside of the homebox. seeing them all lined up makes me want to not to have to put them back in the box :badday:

finally a couple natural light/hps shots of plant c, the "jack," which is the prettiest plant so far

thanks a lot, that's good to hear

I believe the xl is 4'x4'x6'7", or something very close to that. They make a smaller one that is around 3x3 but the same height

I am trying to reserve judgment on smell until a little later in growth as I am not getting an overwhelming or distinctive smell from any of the plants yet (the sat dom Sour NL x Haze is starting to put off a fairly strong spicy/sweet smell).

But, the sournlx do have a light skunky smell to them now. it seems as if a "sour" nose could develop but we're not there yet. I'll have a full strain report after cut and then again after cure.

cool...just wondering what to expect...I have a few a couple weeks in veg now, none are showing sex yet though...is that sour NL X Haze from female seeds X line?...if it is you will be happy!!! it's great smoke, my buddy is still sitting on some from 1 outside plant from last year, like a quad he just WONT let go lol.......anyway, keep us updated bro...peace and veggie blunts

yeah, it's the "x line" strain. I have to say, the FS beans on this run are doing very well and I've got some grapefruit from them up next. also the sweet seeds Black Jack are very nice plants but you never hear of that breeder.

no, I never heard of them, sweet seeds? hmmm...did you get those from a club?.....I grew FS grapefruit twice, one 12/12 from seed and once veg for 30 days or so. Its sweet smoke, I liked their WW the best though, I still got a mom thats SPICY as hell, I have yet to try ice, but there up next....keep me posted....peace
