Run the water from the sink as hot as you can and run it through the bowl(s) stems(s).

I always used this method to get the majority of the resin loosened up and alot will break loose from the temp/pressure of the hot water, especially if the hot water heater is set 120-140F

Follow up with the ISO/salt method to get them more or less spotless...

Electrical contact cleaner (hexane) will work great too.

Just rinse with ISO then soapy water after.

heres my tried and true experiance with boiling my pipes, a practice I no longer partake in for the reasons being....you rarely, especially with real dirty pipes, get them cleaned all the way.....the boiling water does no more than hot tap water would accomplish except that the boiling of the water flows through the pipes chamber drawing out some resins....but the number on down side is the outside of your pipe will have a sticky layer that dries to it because all of the resin and oils in the water dry onto the glass...if that makes any sense, I'm awfully stoned on this herijuana

well, its been roughly 2 hours I believe, and I need to run. I boiled that pipe, the water even disappeared for a bit because I was smoking and forgot. :D I filled the pot back up with hot water and continued boiling for a while and took it out......not much happened. Didn't reach those hard to reach spots at all. I think solvents would be my choice.

I had a friend tell me he soaks his in olive oil for a few days. I know it works on my hands after a lot of trimming.....

I personally have broken one by boiling... You can do it but you need to be mindful and not leave it in the hot water too long. Now I just soak for a day or so in ISO and rinse with hot water... sometimes a repeat is needed.

I use to boil my pipes clean. If you choose this method, I would just throw a little washcloth on the bottom of the pot to keep the pipe from bouncing around and breaking on the pot.

Nowadays, just go straight ISO w/ Salt.

cheers

Wrap it(your glass) in a cotton pillow case w/ rubber bands. Boil, then let cool. The pillow case absorbs alot of the junk.

I took a wire mesh strainer and suspended it above the water level, set it to boiling and left the pipe in the strainer. The steam worked pretty well at getting all the resin loosened up, plus I did not have to submerge my pipe in boiling water. I also kept the lid on the pan so it would get mega steamy in there. It worked pretty well, I had to rinse it out anyway, but it loosened everything up real nice.

I have broken a pipe boiling it before. I dont think it had anything to do with the temp of the water, but more so that the pipe will bounce around on the bottom of the pot. I think if you had something to suspend the pipe in the water then you would have no problem.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet. If you're going to boil it, DON'T DROP IT INTO BOILING WATER. Put it into the water before you heat it up, so that the glass heats with the water. If it's a drastic change the glass is much more likely to break. Let it heat up slow, and let it cool down slow.

iso and salt work wonders, for pieces that are cleaned on a regular basis. if they have years of caked-on grodiness, you should seal the pieces in a ziploc bag with enough iso to completely submerge them. put them somewhere out of the way and come back 3-4 days later. wash them out with hot water and they'll look like they're brand new.
