Abstract

Sea ice is easily discriminable from water on the basis of brightness, but it is harder to discriminate from clouds. This paper describes the use of statistical features to discriminate sea ice from clouds with 90% or greater accuracy.

"if" we could control the weather, why has there not been rain where there are fires being fought out west? if it is the "left" doing this as MTG alleges, why would they let California burn? and why not turn those "Jewish Space Lasers" against her? i''d love to see her ignorant ass burst into flames while standing at a lectern running her mouth... :D

Fairbanks Alaska just reported the latest frost on record. Not that our growing season was worth a shit this year, but......

The only places on earth with reasonably consistent climate over the past 500,000,000 years have been close to the poles, and near the equator. Everywhere else varies wildly even before we started putting in our two cents.

While 50 years isn't that long in regard to tracking climate, I can attest to the climate in Interior Alaska and the Yukon Territory of Canada changing -notably- in that time, and our weather and freezing dates (and melt dates, too) near the North Pole and Sub-Arctic in that region have definitely changed, as well.

*See the opening up of shipping lanes in the arctic waters during months they couldn't ship before.

'THEY' can control the weather.
This is bigger than big. This is YUGE!

And to think this woman is actually elected by the public!
How fucking stupid would you have to be to vote for this complete moron.

Plenty of bad grammar above for ya mate. 🤣

Yes, but even with something crazy like 15-20* of warming, northern Alaska is still cold as shit.

Thanks for the Tip, @Porky82 . It's a tough job that occasionally goes awry.

Grammar Police make wrongful arrests

One of the things I’ve learned doing these Grammar Police columns is that people sometimes cling powerfully to rules that seem to be incorrect.

Consider this email from a reader:

“I had an English teacher in the mid-’50s and she forced two grammar points on me. First, she corrected me when I pronounced poem as pome (with a long O). She said it is to be pronounced PO (long) eM.

“Secondly, she stressed to us that the words ‘verbal’ and ‘oral’ DO NOT MEAN the same. Oral means vocal and verbal means written. End of subject and no arguing with her.” Actually, I’m going to have to argue with her. “Verbal” means in the form of words, spoken or written, while oral refers only to spoken words. Both oral and written communication are verbal.

We gave her a verbal warning.

Numerous villages have had to relocate over the years based on changes in water levels and courses.

And just as with some cancers, it's the 'rate of change' that gets due attention. Faster is rarely better in climate change or in upward PSAs in prostate cancer.

And we haven't had a routine COLD winter in the Interior of Alaska in years.

Edit: No, I don't miss what was sometimes weeks ranging from -35 f. down to -65 f. In that regard, the warming has been pleasant. The increased rain and snow, and overall cooler summer temps, well, that's another story.

i guess with no ice platform to hunt seals etc from, polar bears will start eating Inuits and oil workers instead...
We've seen pics for years of polar bears hiking down the Haul Rd/Dalton Hwy to Prudhoe Bay, often headed south, with reports of inter-breeding between polar bears and grizzly bears..

It's not that there's NO ice off of Alaska's North and Northwest coasts. It's that the ice is diminished and less stable.

Though I haven't taken a peek to see what is happening in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada in a long while, where decades ago the polar bears routinely came through town to the town dump. Now that they're notably warmer overall (I assume), that might be an entertaining video to watch... providing one isn't a polar bear or a resident of Churchill... with young snack-size students about...
