i always believed the pay your bill, dont steal electricity and dont worry crowd. untill that so cal family got raided . and they were just doing laundry. now i think differently

GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- A tip from NIPSCO led federal officials to discover almost 500 marijuana plants and arrest three Gary men.
According to a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Hammond, Jairo Fernando-Valdez, Obed Ornelas and Luiz Carlos Gamboa-Chavez were all arrested Wednesday after officials raided a house at 107 Bridge St. in Gary.

If you follow the news, you’ll notice “electric bill raids” are not uncommon. Police often resort to mining electric bills, since it’s cheaper than using heat sensing cameras with helicopters and potentially less troublesome legally.
I could go on. It's really not even up for debate. Do a search.
A) Police do mine through higher rates when they get bored. It's easy.
B) People at power company call cops and tip them off for no reason other than to be a douche. Happens all the time.
Conclusion: If you're not medical and running lots of watts, cross your fingers, because that's about the best you can do.
