From seed I will top the shit out of them from the second or third node maybe a few more depending, makes that stem swell and i never get floppy seedlings usually, If Im doin it that way. Top until I see reveg stress on new leaf sets then chill before resuming, top every head, might top the tops and let the bottom and sides catch up before topping said bottom and sides.
From clone its just break break break, im with Tom Hill lst is a shit term, your stressing the shit out of your plants doing "lst" lol. So once we got that misunderstanding cleared up figure why not go balls out and get the results I want so I take it to an extreme these days, I call it BFT, brute force training, snap every branch in multiple spots crush most stems over and over and keep em growing horizontally as possible. Idk if you seen that pic but I crush and snap the plant over at the base of the main stem with pliers... "lst" to the max.
Im also a fan of BFT and tieing that bitch to the dirt before flipping, literally...
This is a old one I cut the top off off and splayed her, you can see multiple breaks on stems to get em horizontal...These days I would get the pliers out and crush that stem I cut and lay her on her side heh...
You can see some reveg stress on the node shoots in the upper right... time to let her recover before topping more at that point.

I think sex is predetermined for the most part and some plants have stronger intersex genes that are affected by stress easier.
Id rather break them these days, I avoid the reveg stress shit and keep growth more steady/fast. Topping is more effective I think when your plant is doin side by side nodes top, and if it is alternating nodes id break is probably my general rule.
From my testing I think damage for the most part is less than a stressor than environment so if they are poppin off from structural damage from simply training... They dont stand a chance against hard stress!

may as well not waste the nodes now, i woulda topped em at the second full node after that set of single leaves thats like bigger cotyledons. If it was me id top em at the top now, and keep topping the top nodes that grow out every node.
leave everything under the top node you cut until they branch out and reach the tops level where you are maintaining topping until they catch up, then when they are even top em all.
This is for maximum bushage from seed. Depending on how bg the final pots will be and the size you want stop topping when you got enough heads.
Once you top em the branching response should kick in quick in a day or two.
