Going African

Never considered growing African genetics before, just thought there would be no chance for them to finish here @ 42 degrees latitude.
Last fall, reading Richard William’s ‘Deep Congo’ thread, I got stoked to try out some Congo genetics.
Also around this time, Afrojim was doing a lot of mouthing off, but damn, I sure wanted to try out his Malawi Gold. He had some Power Malawi on auction for pretty cheap, so I picked up a pack of those, (right before he got booted outta here.) along w/ my order for ACE’s ‘Congo’ , and RM’s Nigerian Nightmare.

Also, around this time, I was PMing w/ an old acquaintance here, and he offered me half of his pack of RM’s Nigerian IBL’s. Taken!

Later this winter, another very generous member here offered up his unique genetics; a lot of you will know who I’m talking about when I tell you he sent me the following:

Lesotho X Uzbekisten
Angola X Banghi
Thai/Mexican X Banghi

Then another buddy sent me a mad amount of great outdoor genetics, one of which is Early Durban.

I’m a small time guerilla grower, usually starting 20 seeds and happy to have ten girls by fall, enough for me to get by a yr. as well as make a few friends happy.
I’ve got 27 seedlings going. I didn’t germ any of the Thai/Mexican X Bangi, as I was skeptical that they would finish. The breeder said they’d be done by end of Oct. which is really pushing it for me. Last yr I would have had no problem running anything til then, but this is fickle N.E., and one never knows when the frost is gonna hit. Most of these strains will go mid-oct /end of oct, so stay tuned and see if I was a big fool, leaving behind my tried and true strains for the African gold! :D

Thx for the encouragement, neilspotshop! :D

I presoaked the Congo's, Power Malawi's and Nigerian IBL's March 19th, the new moon. In to peat pellets the next day, and by the 21st, (1st day of spring!)
some of the Congo's were popping up.
germ rates: Congo's - 5/5
PM's -3/5
N IBL's -5/7

As one would think, the C's and PM's have shown nice hybrid vigor compared to the N IBL's.

March 27th I received the LxU's and AxB's and started them.
Each germed 4/4

April 16th I started the Early Durban's and Nigerian Nightmare's.
The NN's (4/5) will be kept under floros/MH til summer solstice, (june 21st)
due to their photosensitivity. Want to get them as big as I can.

My big mistake was getting them out in the cold frame too early, after being teased w/ a wk of nice weather in april. After that wk, it's been unseasonably cool, and the plants suffered for it. The 1st wk I was bringing them in night's.
They were all under the floros 14.5 hrs, but even w/ starting their day under the floros and ending the same, 2 of the Nigerian IBL's expressed their malehood after 3 days of this! After a wk of in and out, I left them out the 2nd wk, just as the weather went south. :frown:
I have since killed off one of the males, but have kept this one, after plucking off/topping him. Hoping he will reveg under 16 hr floro lighting.

Things are now seriously warming up, tho I did have to cover up the cold frame 2 night's this wk due to near-freezing temps.

I'm trying Malawi Gold (from African Seeds) this year too. Trying to help some friends make beans and see how good the MG really is. I've heard that it's one of the most potent around. I'm at about 37N, so they should finish fine unless we get an unusually early frost.

Tried some Asians last year, but they didn't quite finish. Hoping the MG is quicker.

Btw, I recently read an old-timer say that he and his buddies believe seeded bud is more psychoactive than sensi, and I can't say I disagree. I'm planning to let the 2 MG males dust all 6 of my females to best preserve their genes, but also the rest of my ladies in the garden too. I don't really mind sacrificing my outdoor girls to make plenty of seeds, and also to compare it to the sensi I've been growing inside.

Hopefully I will get some good indicas in the garden too before the African Boys start spreading pollen.

peace,
GM

Hey all, thx for your interest in my lil project! :D
Glass Man, please feel free to post your progress here w/ your MG's. I'd love to see other African strains represented here as well.
Also, if anyone can enlighten me on the backgrounds of some of these strains, that would be great!
RM quote: "the Nigerian nightmere is The IBL which did come fro kanza keya x to afghani x manga rosa aka my bc mango ."
I remember the name Kanza Keya from OG days, but would love to know more about these Nigerians.
The Early Durban came from another old OGer, Vaaran I believe, but would love to know more background on that one too!
Any help/insights are most appreciated!

Ah! :D
I like how Don Budulero calls the Lesotho x Uzbeki...
"Lesbeki"
lmn and rainha Ginga call it "Cantarella" :biglaugh:
and...
I shared some lebanese seeds from La Bekaa Valley with Kanza, lately :D
I have a vague memory of Kanza´s Mexican being ripped by someone ..the nigerian as well...perhaps? :sasmokin:

If I'm able to take the camera along next time I visit the garden I'll post a photo or 2. We just got a little rain today, so hopefully I won't have to lug any water up that hill too soon. Sure wish I'd found the "right" spot downhill from here....

peace,

Medjool, Deft, Raco, thx for checking in, my friends! :D
Raco, thx for the background info!
Paz got me the "scoop" on the 'cantarelas'. A form of poison? I do like 'Lesbeki', jejeje!

The following plants were upcanned and topped last wk. One of each went untopped, the center ones in ea. shot. They will all be going out to thier permanent home in a wk.

Power Malawi's

Congo's

Nigerian IBL's

The male Nigerian is the back one. He just got upcanned today along w/ all other seedlings. He is now back in the house w/ the NN's, upgraded to a 250W MH, and yes, he is revegging! :woohoo:

lovely highlighter!

early durban is from og varaan. miss him. he breed it in germany, on the boarder to france. its a cross between dutch passions early girl and sensi seeds durban poison. it flowers to the finish here in denmark and many ppl love it for its nice taste and high. the seeds you have is f5 or 6 i believe. its not growing 4 meters high here, but keeps under 2 meters, 1½ is probaly the most normal hight. i stread those seeds around a lot and only got positive feedback on them.

i will try to find some pix, but i know paddi has some from last season.

edit: found a few pix, NOT mine, but they are pretty typical for varaans early durban.
