Along this line of thought...
As a newb I gravitated towards the members with 'survivor' status in the area that I was most interested - at that time I never planned to go indoors. It stands to reason that someone with a full bar must know what theyre doing.
I can say that I have not posted many helpful things at all, if any. If I had to guess - 99% of my rep is based on 1 of 3 things.
1) Saying, "Hey, good job/ looks good."
2) Posting a nice picture
3) Saying something funny
None of which entitles me to say I know whats up.
Maybe instead of eliminating the buttons, there should be a count of total pos/neg rep listed under our post count. Or a sub-menu when you click the button. Something like -
