That's not uncommon... back when I was a newb smoker I went into a grow shop in Santa Cruz and asked to see a plastic Graphix "bong" and was asked to leave... and among my roommates and I we used to always get a laugh out of Northeastern students getting kicked out of Buried Treasures for using the wrong words. Oh, or the time I bought a pipe at a place from a girl I took latin classes with (out of state) and she said "you know this is for tobacco use only" as I was about to pay for it. Hilarious!
For that matter the first grow shop I went to, in the deep south, they had a sign that warned patrons to not discuss anything illegal.
That's the downside of things being illegal. They have to keep up appearances ("Incense Holder" "Water Filtration System"). Now I find it hilarious to go into grow shops and they're totally open about everything.
On the topic of cops watching shops, years ago I'm pretty sure I was followed. Jeep Cherokee tailed me for quite awhile (like, getting on a highway, driving several miles, getting off, following me for multiple turns). It took me a little while but I acted normal and drove slowly and carefully until I got into a warren of side streets and lost sight of them for a second, then stepped on it and made unexpected turns and pulled off into a parking space out of sight. Scary but nothing ever came of it.
