Garage door hanging question

Was wondering how you guys that are growing in your garage hang your garage doors. Was helping a friend on a buildout and Ive never had to deal with garage doors and dont wanna fuck up his garage. We're trying to build 2 rooms but the track for the garage door is in the way. Any idea how to get the door to hang without it?

The garage door will just sit there without any of the curved or horizontal pieces of track. I would even screw a board at the top of the garage door to make sure that it can't be lifted. But be VERY careful when you release the springs, those things can, and will take off fingers/hands/heads. I would suggest you get a buddy or two, raise the door, and then carefully disconnect the springs. assuming they are the long horizontal floppy kind. If it is the round drum kind that sit directly above the door, I would need pictures, but basically you have to unwind the spring, by releasing a set screw, and using a couple pry bars/pipes unwind the tension. Once you have the tension released from the springs, just take down the curved/horizontal pieces. (and opener if there is one.) Problem solved, no more crap in the way, and that door isn't going to open unexpectedly. btw, if you have the floppy springs, and release them while the door is up, remember that door is really freaking heavy when you go to put it back down, have help!

Actually thinking about it .. if it is the torsion spring above the door, you shouldn't have to screw with it .. just screw/nail a board above the door so it cant come up, then just remove the horizontal tracks. Probably best for most people not to screw with the torsion springs. Even though I am pretty mechanical .. I have more than a healthy respect for large springs.

If you don't want to remove the track, place hangers from the ceiling with angles to hang just below the track and build a false ceiling, so that you do not have to worry about light or air from outside.

Be careful around garage door springs. They can fuck you up in a millisecond.

Yeah its the round drum type and Im scared to death of the springs. Gonna build a wall right behind it. Cant do drop ceiling I need the height for gavitas. Thanks oldfart I think I will look into screwing a board above the door. Gonna check it out this weekend and see if it'll work.
