Foxfarm ocean forest soil?

Hi everybody I am getting ready for my indoor grow this season. I am going to try it all organic, but I don't have much experience with organics.

I will be using Foxfarm ocean forest soil and was wondering what everyone thought of it?

Is it fine on it's own or do I need to add to it?

Is the PH neutral or does it need to be adjusted?

What organic ferts would you recommend to go with the ffof soil?

Sorry about all the questions , but I don't want to have any problems.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Mmmm. Garlic! You must be in the Garlic "Capitol" eh? Cool!

We are experimenting with FF also and so far so good. They say the plants are fed by the soil for 30 days - so from seed and freshly rooted clone we put them in FF soil for about 30 days - then re-potted them once into more soil - and started adding light nutes after another 10 days of veg. So far so good.

There were some ph issues when we used EJ - but since laying off that and using pure blend grow, everything looks healthy.

I also would love to hear some more experienced users methods.

Yeah were in the garlic capitol. Some days it smells wodreful others it is just nauseating. I guess to much of anything is too muchj.

Ocean Forrest is a great soil...and like IBC said it is supposed to have 30 days worth of organic nutrients available. But I feed my ocean forrest plants just like I do the Pro-mix, and the plants just do that much better OF will work with any good nutrients, so I guess the decision is up to you. Pure blend pro works well, but so do other nutes.

Thanks for the info sunnyside. I have some pure blend flower and some foxfarm grow big for veg right now. I have worked with the pureblend before , but i haven't tried the foxfarm gryet and was wondering what you think?

Grow big is a great veg nute. It has everything you need for good vegatative growth. Start with 5 mils per gallon and work your way up to 10-15 mils. I would have to say Grow Big is one of the easiest and best grow ferts available.

Im not sure i understand your first question... pbp soil is only in the flower formula. The veg is the same for both soil and hydro.

Big bloom is an organic addative...not to be confused with a nutrient. Big Bloom is actually very similiar to the original pure blend. I would use Big Bloom just like the bottle says in flower. Tiger bloom is the flower nutrient from Foxfarm, and is the counterpart to Grow Big. If you follow the FF feeding schedule you will use Tiger bloom and Big bloom together.

OF is great soil. Costly, but great soil, just add perlite. As is, good for vegging, cuttings, seeds. When I transplant for flowering I add blood and bone meal, dolomite, earthworm castings. Xcellent recycled, also. Its a no muss, no fuss setup.
If available, try a few plants in OF and see the results for yourself. For feeding use bat guano, smelly shit, but, this too is xcellent. Use it as a tea, or but the cup full added to the OF (follow the directions on the bag, a nice site to use for research: http://www.wormsway.com/detail.asp?sku=JBG400)

I used the FF Ocean Forest exclusively during my grows but I used it in a 2 to 1 mix with the FF Light Warrior which has the Mychorrizal Fungi in it. I also added about 25% perlite to the mix to help lighten it up and to help buffer the nutes in it a bit for the clones/seedlings.

It is a wonderful mix and the plants love it but you need to watch the PH of your runoff as the Ocean Forest tends to get real acidic (got down to 4.8-5.2 before I realized I had a PH problem), especially after the salts from flower nutes builds up a bit (I used the Advanced Nutrients 2+program exclusively). I had to start adding two cups of pulverized dolomite lime to the every 5 gallons of soil mix and I had to PH my nutes at 6.8-7.0 just to help keep the PH of the soil in the acceptable range.

Othan than that, I loved the stuff. I am very intrigued by BOG's soil mixture and may try it as an alternative to compare the Ocean Forest/Light Warrior blend to. It's BOG's own organic soil mix and everyone who has used it so far (especially the newbies) have had unreal results with it. Much bigger yields than I did using the Ocean Forest. So, you might consider trying that as well and it's a shitload cheaper than Ocean Forest.

Sunnyside thanks for all the advice on the ff products. I chose the ff grow big over EJ because it seemed to have more micro nutes in it. I don't like mixing a lot of ferts together, but maybe on my next grow I will give it a try.

Thanks for stopping by ecoNpenthe. I am wondering if it is really necessary to add to of or is it ok right out of the bag? As far as recycling I am not a big fan of it because of all the problems and all the left over soil goes right into my outside gardens they love it ( I live in the country so it is no prob).

I also like BOGS soil mix , but I am a bit lazy and don't have much time to mix soil. I also am a little afraid to mix my own soil because I have done it before anbd I mader it too hot.

FF Ocean is good stuff. Although I did not have as much success using it for cloning, and seed starting. I have had much better luck using a seedstarter mix for cloning and seed germinating, and then moving to the FF Ocean soil when transplanted. They really perk up when they hit the FF dirt.

Then when flowering I start the Grow Big and Tiger Bloom schedule starting at 25% of dosage, and watching how plant reacts. Go easy on the ferts, as the soil has enough for a good 4-6 weeks. It is easy to get that ph a little too low if you add ferts.

In fact, if you time your transplants well, you can get away without adding ferts. You will not get the giant buds that way, but they will be very clean!
Works for me, I have gotten some wonderful feedback on my produce!

I only began to notice the problem in flower but probably began in veg as I was feeding nutes from about 3-4 weeks after sprouting. Yes, I would always advise adding dolomite lime to your mix from the beginning which will help buffer any future problems. Also, it's best to add the perlite right at the beginning as this will help the sprouts develop roots more easily and it helps to buffer the nutes in FFOF so that you won't burn your babies.

Yes, this is the Bay Area Goo. It is a tasty one, that is coated with trics. When ready to pick, it smells like ripe cantaloupe. After cure, a very nice honeydew melon/hash taste.

IIRC, it came from sr-71. I intend on keeping this strain around for a while.

Rellikbuzz how much lime do you add ? Do you have any ratios? I just used FFOF for the first time a couple of weeks ago taking care of some clones for my buddy Dezylu and noticed that the soil was a little heavy, so I will take your advice and add perilite to it on my next run. Thanks for the tips.

**This is the recipe for the soil mixture I have been using for quite a few years now..."Moonshine's Mix" requires only plain waterings throughout the life of the plant with only three transplants... I have made one or two changes to the mix over the last year and now its quite idiotproof......and by the end of flowering you will share the same feelings I do.." Foxfarm rules".....My main issues with most liquid fertlizer diets is the large swing in Ph that can occur or as with most growers , adding the wrong fertlizer or too much can ruin you crop or really mess up the flavor. For ME flavor is what organic herb is all about....

You will have to buy these supplies from a Hydro/grow store or a professional garden supply company/ nursery....Foxfarm is located in Arcata, California which is in Humblolt county. So if any company is better placed to meet the needs of growers it would be them...I'll list the products to buy; then the actual base ingredients of the entire mix....when I but a single batch of soil its about 65 dollars total but costs will vary depending on store....

1 bag of Foxfarm Ocean Forest potting soil (teal colored bag) ...cost 17-25$...1.5 cu/ft

1 bag of Foxfarm Batguano/earthwormcastings planting mix (red bag) cost 15-20$.....1. cu /ft

1 bag of Light Warrior High Yeild ultra premium blend (dark blue bag) cost 15-20$......1. cu/ft

8-10 qt's of Perilite... I prefer the foxfarm "chunky" perilite but it can be expensive...When using the FF chunky it comes in a large bag I use half the bag in this mix...its easier than measuring out qt's...(roughly 8$ worth of perilite)

1 cup of Fox farm "Peace of Mind" fruit and flower fertlizer 5-8-4....$7 for a box which has about 15 cups ...

I use a small 2.49$ blue kiddie swimming pool from Mal-wart () and a regular shovel (bad back) to mix it all together....I keep a 40 gal tub of the stuff mixed up ready to go at all times...the mixture is somewhere in the 43-45 gallons of soil total...which will fill nine or ten 4 gallon buckets or seven or eight 5 gallon buckets....so it is quite a bit of substrate....I have also tried this mix in a "Soma" style dirt bed but honestly it works best in regular buckets....

the reason you dont need any additional ferts is simple...you just created one of THE richest soils available anywhere.....the three different bags of planting mixtures that were used were created to be used indepentently with the liquid ferts...but combining all three creates a sort of super soil.....

Ingredients in the soils are: Composted Forest Humus x2, Sphagnum peat moss x3, Earthworm castings x3, PacificNorthwest seagoin fish ,crab meal, shrimp meal, vermicultural compost (bedding material and livestock manure) x2 , Sandy loam x2, perilite x2, fossilized bat guano x2, granite dustx3, Norwegian Kelp meal x2, dolomite lime and oyster shell for Ph x3 and Humic acid from leonardite and Mycorrhizal innoculents.....then the additional cup of "peace of mind" adds feather meal, hydrolyzed fish, fish bone meal, sulfate of potash, magnesia, alfalfa meal, blood meal, bat guano, rock phosphate, kelp meal. and gypsum....plus 12 species of Mycorrhizae and 6 species of benificial bacteria.....

Water Ph should be started at 6.7 and dropped to 6.5 by the end of flowering.... wet/dry cycles are vital to the success with this soil mixture ; if kept too wet the plants will be stunted so allow at least 4-7 days between waterings...Bucket size and plant size will determine how many days between waterings...personaly I let my plants droop(not wilt) slightly with the buckets being very light...

To make sure you have non-stop growth and foilage development transplants are key....I have a simple schedule I go by.....I take my rooted clones and plant them in 1/2 gallon containers which they remain for 2 weeks......then they are transplanted into 2 gallon containers for an additional 2-3 weeks...at this time they are ready to flower and I can eiter choose to transplant into a 4 or 5 gallon container depending on the strains food or root growth needs....or if its a 90+ sativa strain I may even plant into a 10 gallon garbage can that has been drilled full of holes....

Simple...kinda of expensive but Worth every penny....I'v eused a dozen other soils and mixes of my own but this 3 bag mix is amazing....The guys at my local grow shop are now recommending it to everyone and they say the response has been overwhelming...they were reordering dirt weekly to meet the demand to the point the store opened a warehose in the back of the store so they could carry palates of foxfarm dirt .....**

I did a lil test with some used Moonshinemix where I grew another round of flowering plants in already used soil......

After I chopped 3 Blues (which use a tone of nutes in the soil) I poured the 5gallon containers into a mini pool and chopped up all the rootmass and removed as much of the roots as possible.....I then put in 1 cup of Peace of mind fruit and flower and mixed the used dirt up real well....I then planted 3 fresh Blues in 5 gallon containers and allowed them to flower and normal.....I cant tell the difference....The 2nd round of plants grew just as well as the first....no nute issues and possibly even grew a few inches taller.....

SO now I am suggesting taking my 3 bag "moonshine mix" and adding a bale of Sunshile peatmoss ( which is omri) and cutting the dirt with the extra moss.....you should be able to double the amount of soil without doubling the cost.....and I can almost gaurentee the plants will be just as happy......
