Fish Tank!

super super jealous :joint:

i think next time around i'm going to build my own plexi micro natural aquarium....there's no reason to spend $5000000000 on a premade setup :joint:

you guys' pics are super inspiring. some questions:

what is the "easiest"/starter coral or living rock to start with? i've never had a successful saltwater tank.

what is the minimum size tank for seahorses? also, what is a good "starter" seahorse? i know you need at least 4-5 for them to be happy :joint:

have any of you purchased fish online or mailorder? i did once, but it was for a fighting betta, and he was a tough motherfucker...but most fish it seems are way way way too fragile for the mail. thoughts? experiences?

thanks again for reactivating my thread and giving me so many awesome pics to look at :joint:

I'd give them at least a 55 (depends on tank dimensions, sea horse prefer tall tanks) for 4-5 with 1 lb of live rock per gallon The best start up stuff is aragonite or crushed coral for a substrate, you can buy bags of either(instant cycle and keeps ph high and steady). As for rock for anemones check what you can get locally and ask the dealers.
If you've never had a successful s/w setup please don't buy any sea horse. They're extremely sensitive and with little experience you're very likely to kill them, not to mention they're expensive. Get something easy to care for and you'll know when you're ready for the high maintenance fish.
Purchasing fish online is possible and a lot of people do it with success. check out aquabid.com .Usually you have to go to the airport to pick it up. Shipping will be pricey

Amazing tanks folks. I don't currently run any tanks but my old favorites were the African cichlids (not as pricey as the saltwater tanks).

Yes don't get seahorses even if you get a good tank setup. They just don't do well in captivity and will die. The store I get my corals/fish from wont carry them for this reason. My tank took me years to get it that good. I have learned much in that time. Saltwater reef tanks take many hr's of commitment and money. The enjoyment that you get when it all falls into place is absolutely wonderful. You and your family friends will spend hr's just looking at all the life that it's there. My next tank will be an in wall with a room behind for all the equipment.
