Apartment grows are high risk. My first grow was in an apartment and I would never do it again. Nosey workers can come in anytime they want for any b.s. reason. I am so lucky to be free. When I was growing, my upstairs neighbor thaught it would be fun to fire his gun in the parking lot. Some neighbors saw him and called the cops. I was comming home from work and when I get to my apartment there are like 10 cop cars and police with dogs surrounding my building. Needless to say I was freaked out. I didn't know what happened and I thaught I was busted. Luckily it was my crazy neighbor but I was so paranoid with police dogs walking by my window that I moved out the next day.
Neighbors are a pain in the ass. If you grow in an apartment how are you going to explain carrying in bulky reflecters, carbon filters, soil, hydro tables, Co2 tanks...ect.... I got away with it, I don't know how but I did. I would never ever do it again in an apartment. Best bet is to rent or buy a house with an attached garage. Always pay your rent on time, be nice to the landlord, and try to have as little contact with him/her as possible. Fix things on your own and take care of the yard. This will make you seem like the perfect tennant and the landlord would not want to lose you. Landlords want money and a tennant who takes care of the property. If you can give this to the landlord, you can grow in peace.

More golden info Billy - right on man; an interesting story and excellent advice :)

Peace

well what happened was they said they needed to get into that room to do some kind of maitnence which we knew was b.s. We had lived there for 4 months and were only running to 400w lights so i doubt it was a power thing. The major thing that sucked was i had to put all our stuff outside and we had just popped some malawi diesel seeds(the ones found in the canabible) and it was too cold outside and they all died.

Carry them in with boxes. Also, change your room lock. Fixed.

Locks are easily picked. Have fun buying big boxes to haul stuff with. I would rather do it in a house with a garage or other private entrance. You can do what ever you want, but I stand by my statement apartment grows are high risk.

in the '80s I had a closet grow and unbeknown to me my landlady was even bringing her friends to see
-> I would not take the risk of growing in a rental unit

Last Sat I helped a friend repair the deck of a rental unit and observed 2 big-ass electrical drops under the bedrooms, all windows covered, tons of hydro stuff under the house/deck. The landlord knows, and this stupid renter is threatening to withhold the rent if the deck is not fixed.
jeez

Thats pretty much it. If I was the landlord you would be cool I wouldn't have told any one.
If there was a problem I would ask you to tear the grow down. Others would have you jailed. not worth the risk.
Better to grow in your own place. You should at least use a grow cab that can be locked.

Its just a pain to have to carry empty boxes to your car. Take them to the hydro store. Make sure what you buy fits in the box. Have to box up the items in the hydro store or other location and then carry boxes back into your apartment. Also people might wonder why you are always carring boxes out of your apartment before bringing the same boxes back into your apartment a short time later. Apartment people are nosey its much easier in a house with some privacy.

Much easier and less risk, now I live where mmj is not criminal> As I said earlier necessity is the mother of invention. Still landlords have placed a stigma on pot users. I own and do not manage properties any more. Sick people need to do whats necessary to get their meeds.

Had it happen to me

Had it happen to me

When I lived in an apartment in CA I had the same thing happen to me, but since I am a Medicinal Cannabis user I was not that worried but still I got scared.

I was away for a couple days and had a friend watchin the gals. I comes up one night and noticed my building mgr.'s dog in my apt, he says "what the f*ck", walked into the other room to see my 80 something year old mgr checking out the mommas, not sure if she saw the girls cause they were in another room, but most likely. She they says to my friend, not to say anything to me and that it was cool, the lady loved me, appartenly I look like a baseball player on her favorite team, nice. Anyway scared the shit out me at first then realized some things. All was cool but I was out of that place shortly after....harvest.

My only advice is to change the locks, i may not be the right thing to do but if they have a key, live in the building, they are going in your place without a doubt.

Be safe

I can agree with all of you guys when ya say an apartment grow is risky, but I really think it comes down to the area/person/motive. If your in a trashy area because you then figure the police have better things to do, then you just may be asking for it.

I can speak upon one incident that I was involved with. Me and my lady had an nice apartment when we first got together that I was growing in (4 big plants, CFL). Normal 2bdrm, 2nd floor, in a 4 flex. They had around 100 units total. Well we luck out to get the apartment in the same building as the Grounds Mngr... Over the months we got acquainted, little things like keep the music down was said. UNTILl the day we LOCK THE KEYS IN THE HOUSE...One of those "I thought you had the keys". Well.....We had changed the locks, so the Mngr had no key. We didnt know what to do...

I had plants growing, I was like OMG...So I go to the Mgr thinking oh well, I will tear em down when he goes to call the police. So we tell him that I changed the locks and he cant use his key. He decides to get a ladder and tells me the only way he can get in is my bedroom window(Left open for plants) or I would have to pay for locksmith. So he puts the ladder up against the wall and starts to climb, I quickly suggest that I go up the ladder, NO GO!...So me and my lady just hold each other as he goes up the ladder. Now the plants are directly across from the window in the closet, well when he gets to the top he just looks back down and says now one of you go walk around. I RAN AROUND... He just said I need to get him a new key for that door and he will be putting the bill in my mailbox.

We sat in that bedroom (Forgetting even where we were going) and just thought about what to do. I analyzed every word he said, and came to the conclusion it was cool...Trust me it took alot, but this guys didnt want to ruin our lives.......In the end I still kept growing though I never finished, I was learning. Nothing was ever said of it or about it. Life goes on.

Moral of the story; if you change your locks, have a backup for YOURSELF.

Another precaution to take in an upper story grow is to go out and buy pond liner. Cover the floor from wall to wall. Make a giant dish in your room, especially if growing hydro because something always spills or leaks.

If you change the locks and the landlord asks why and why you didn't tell him, simpy say I lost the key and didn't want anyone letting themselves in, and I changed the locks yesterday and were going to tell you soon.

Another nugget!! :dueling:

apt. grower, i use a bedroom closet, which i changed the lock on, and always lock the bedroom door which i pop every time i enter with a pin above the door. so far no problems. maintenance has never had to visit the bedroom side of the unit. One day I caught a couple of the neighborhood kids shooting arrows at the wall near the window! scared the shit out of me, they could have broken something and forced maintenance to repair it inches from my grow.

anyways moving my grow to another complex soon that has little to no crime, 1st floor growing inside metal shelving 4'x8'x8' tall, light proof with blk/wht panda film around it. set up in a bedroom which will have its lock changed out. Im also adding a sliding partition between the rooms and entrance/living area.

My suggestion is to make it very difficult for maintenance to enter feel comfortable staying around. Placing a sign on a bedroom door that says "Quiet Baby napping" or a typical do not disturb may act as an additional obstacle.

Finally invest in some web cams and post a sign near the entrance that the apt. is under surveillance.

bateman, don't put "quiet baby napping" if you don't actually have a baby. remember, apt. residents are nosey as hell and will start questioning when you don't got a baby. "do not disturb" would be better, imo.

one thing about posting a sign about apt. under surveillance is that people will know you got cameras and obviously to protect something important besides your life. most likely everybody else in the complex has to rely on deadbolt and chain. imagine seeing the look on your landlord's face when you tell them for the first time in court that you had hidden surveillance that caught them illegally breaking and entering to smash your grow op. priceless...

luckily, i live in a somewhat decent college house and have a large master room with a 5 x 5 sideroom. this is the perfect place to house my HH original. there is also a shower curtain rod, so i hung up a drape to cover the room and tent. now all i got to do is get a lock for my door and be golden. my landlord has never called, visited, nothing. every once in a while someone will come to do shit in the basement 2 floors below my grow. i really lucked out on this landlord...

I was once preparing to grow in an apartment that I rented. The first thing that I did was to call the manager to fix a minor problem. I really didn't need any help but I wanted him and his maintenance man in the unit. I set up a time when I would be at work and told him to let himself in.

A day after the maintenance was completed I called and complained about a missing camera. I went on and on getting more and more angry as we talked. I confronted him about it for several days but did not directly accuse him. The implication was clear and I talked about calling the police at one point.

After that experience he was scared shitless to ever entered my apartment again without me being there. It may have been cruel and unethical, but with that worry out of the way, the grow went as planned.
This is dumb as shit and really ****ing low on your part. If I was a maintenance person for an apartment complex and I was just doing my job and someone accuses me of stealing something I never took I would make the rest of your experience in that complex a living ****ing hell and if your accusations somehow get around and I lose my job you'll know you ****ed with the wrong person. I'm not intimidated by people so this trick wouldn't work on me for a second. Hell if I knew I did nothing wrong I would call the cops for ya' and then you can explain. My job and livelihood are far more important than your little closet grow even if it is for med. reasons.
