Hey, CC. Could you post the soilless mix you use in addition to liquid ferts. I have the same goal as you with smooth smoke. Also, when do you cut off nutes?
Well... you can get smooth smoke from many growing styles. Smoothness is decided by how clean the soil and plant are by harvest time... which means... no matter which way you grow, you need to provide a little starvation before you harvest. I am happy when my ripe plants are losing their leaves left and right... it means I did my job right.
If you still want my soiless method... I use a soiless mix, like Pro-Mix HP or Coco coir for a medium... And they are simply fed a liquid organic fertilizer... pick one, they're pretty much all good if used right.
One thing to know about coco coir... it's not colonized with beneficial bacteria and micology (fungi), therefore it's very highly advised to add mycorrhizae (available at grow store) to your coco coir. These bacteria and fungi are what converts your organic fertilizer into food for the plants. In an organic system, organic "stuff" doesn't feed plants... the bacteria and fungi feed the plant. Pro-Mix HP has mycorrhizae already built in.
And... with a fully functioning organic grow operation... you should never need to adjust pH levels... the plant and bacteria work together to adjust pH levels automatically... Which is very helpful for me... since I have low a pH water source.
I have moved away from soiless organics, though, I should say. I now add a little organic matter to the mix so the organic process thrives. All I add is a little earthworm castings, or Fox Farm Ocean Forest to my coco or Pro-Mix HP, some perlite for aeration, and that's it. This gets the mycorrhizae population thriving fast. Now when I feed the soil, the plant has faster access to the nutrients locked up in the organic food I'm feeding it.
