End of Week 3......Am I on the Right Path?

Hi all it's the end of week 3 and I wanted to post some pics for you all to see and give me some feedback as to whether I'm on the right path or not. They all are in MG Organic Choice soil and receive strict 18/6 under 3- 26watt (actual) CFL's and 1- 25 watt (actual) 24" single bar grow light. Also I have a fan that blows on them for the entire 18 hours they receive light. What do you all think? Are they growing on schedule to where they should be at 3 weeks or are they under developed??

Yeah at first the lights were to far away for the last week they were about 2" away.

Ok time to transplant......... 8" pots ok? and what do you mean by up to the first set of nodes?

Yeah they seem to be taking up water quickly....just watered em yesterday morning. The 3 CFL's are 150 watt equiv. so your saying go up to 200. Ok...will do. Grow room is a small space now but moving into a 6ft x 36" x 8ft space in about a day or so it should be ready. Fan switch to 24/7 will do.

Hi NYNebie, they look fine to me a little stretchy though. I dont have much knowledge to help out but the seeds I germed looked very similar to yours but I kept my lights kinda close to them. I used some old aquarium lights I have which worked out well for germing as they run pretty cool. I think they are called power compacts which are similar to flourescents but I think just a little brighter. I kept them in the 16oz cups until until I needed to water them everyday before transplanting. It sounds to me though that Mknasty32 has some good pointers but I dont know if they are ready for 1 gallon pots. I read you transplant when they need to be watered everyday. It seemed to work well for me. Hopefully some more tips and advice will come in but in my opinion they are just a little stretchy. You may wanna get some support for them if they fall over.

It's a 6" fan and it blows on them from 36"-40" away for the 18 hours they receive light. I haven't yet switched them to 24/7. Don't think I am either. Just too much I think. Plants are looking good though both sets. (6 under artificial and 5 natural sunlight).

Gelado the 5 plants that get only natural light spend From 5am to 12noon in my SE facing window and then I move them to the S facing window where they get great sun from 12noon or 1pm to 8 or 9 pm. The sun is very direct in both windows during those times. Then I put them in the dark. They are growing just a tad slower than the ones under lights but look very healthy. Strange or no?

Not strange, the glass will cause some of the light energy to be absorbed/reflected. Have they stretched since you added soil to the pots?

No they haven't and I have since transplanted some of the plants into larger pots and buried the up to there first node. They seem to be growing leaves faster now rather than trying to grow taller. I also dropped the light to about 2"

From my experience seedlings stretch like that from lack of light, or the light isn't close enough. I doubt those plants have sufficient root mass for transplant yet. You'll end up getting clumps of loose soil and perhaps some broken roots because it didn't take shape around the entire container yet. Once you do though you'll see a jump in growth. Regular beer cups/solo cups are fine for young seedlings or clones.

You're letting the soil get semi-dry (not bone dry but noticeable dry, the pot will be noticeable lighter in weight) before you water again correct?

From my experience seedlings stretch like that from lack of light, or the light isn't close enough. I doubt those plants have sufficient root mass for transplant yet. You'll end up getting clumps of loose soil and perhaps some broken roots because it didn't take shape around the entire container yet. Once you do though you'll see a jump in growth. Regular beer cups/solo cups are fine for young seedlings or clones.

You're letting the soil get semi-dry (not bone dry but noticeable dry, the pot will be noticeable lighter in weight) before you water again correct?

Yeah.... I let them get semi-dry and normally the top is dry but underneath is still damp. That's when I go to the feel test. If they feel lighter then I water them Otherwise I wait. I can see some roots around the sides of some of the clear containers as well as on the bottom.......

You can keep your ventilation running 24/7 if it doesn't drop the temps so far that it stunts growth. The plants need all the oxygen they can get but this often makes a grow room too cold so 18/6 is a safe bet.

From my experience seedlings stretch like that from lack of light, or the light isn't close enough.

The stretching is from lack of light without a doubt. I would never window grow, just not worth the reduced light intensity IMHO.

Will raising the daylight time confuse them? Or does it not make any difference going from 18/6 to 23/1?
