ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION

How can they detect tapping the mains I knew a guy he is an electrician and he has been jacking the electric company for many many years he says they can't detect it unless you get tipped off or something dont know if he still does it...

i had a 2000sqft home. 3 people lived there leisurely, tvs left on, lights left on, computers left on. we ran from 7kw to 12kw of growroom over a span of 2 years. electric bills fluctuated all the time. dont smoke crack, dont steal the power, and dont tell the electric company you have 22 mexicans living in your basement. homes are not designed with 220 amps of power for the electric companies to inform police when customers are using more then 80 amps or 10kw of power. electric companies do no inform police of power usage, that information requires a warrant. however using mass amounts of power could get the electric company out to your house to see if any power stealing is going on, and having a smell of reefer outside your home could get the police informed good luck. dont take anything i say serious im just a bullshitter =] good luck with your show

Because they know how much power they are producing and they meter how much is going through each substation to each branch line and how much is consumed by each home on the branch...and of course they know roughly the voltage drop on each branch. It's simple math for em really...it's just a matter of how much do they care.

Your buddy may just be the only one on a large branch that's ripping power and getting lucky because of it - whereas others may have 10 people stealing power on a branch and then it becomes very noticable.

if you are tapping off the line side of your meter to steal power, it is very easy to tell.
when you consume electricity, the wire heats up, this is natural.
someone from the power company, or anybody really, could use a thermal temperature gun and aim it at the wire feeding your meter. then they aim it at the wire leaving your meter (load).
if the temperature is higher at the line side than the load side, you are stealing power.
quite a simple and effective way to get caught.
only almost failsafe way to steal it would be if you had an overhead service drop to your house, you trench underground from the house to your service pole. pull conductors, tap into the load sid of the transformer and don't get caught.
of course this wouldn't be easy for most, and you probably couldn't get it done without most people noticing.
this way you wouldn't be sneaking power past your meter on the existing drop, and the only temperature reading could be taken on the pole, but those wires are run in free air and don't get as hot.
then again, if everybody in the neighborhood has overhead feeds and the power company notices there is an underground service hookup, you can get fucked.
not to mention where you dug your trench will be quite prevelant with all the dead grass from the movement of earth.
the moral of my story is that it is much less of a hassle just to pay for your consumption.

only way to steal it is from the line side of the metering equipment.

i don't steal, that wouldn't be very catholic of me.
although killing people that don't agree with my ways is catholic.

Ballastman is right again. I have run 8k in a 3 bed 2 bath. And I flower during non buisness for the same reason ballastman does. It keeps things nice and quiet in case anyone wants to stop by. Just pay your bill and your fine.
However, if you dont live at your place then you HAVE TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU DO! If your bill is running 600 a month and there is no furniture in the place or no houseplants, the walk isnt shoveled etc. Then someone may wonder whats up.
When my meter reader comes buy im always in the garage with the welder and air compresser than i never use ON DISPLAY. Never a question.

On a very important note. Actually a couple. NEVER steal electricity, an associate got busted with a decent size show running. He got in MUCH more trouble for the stolen elec than for the 100+ plants.
Also, ALWAYS have everything involved in the show in one spot. Nutes, extra lights, res, power center ALL THAT KINDA SHIT needs to be able to be seperated from the living portion of the house. That way if someone needs to come in, you can shut and lock a few doors and BAM clean house like woah! The excuse is...landlords storage couple hundred off my rent.

I have always heard 1000 watts per bedroom but that seems high to me. I am in 1200 sq ft 3bd 2 ba, 1200 watts. My bill is already 300+. It is 10+-kwh for baseline then goes way up. So according to the 1k a bedroom rule i could do another 3 600 watters? My bill would be rediculous.

i draw around 5k total in my grow and barely ever top $300 a month!

Can someone convert a basline allowance of 350 KW hours per month is .13 per kwh. At 1400+ kwh it is .39 per kwh. For a 8kw grow.

Hey all, Ive found the power co. to be way to greedy to care unless asked. I only have a small setup so not too worried about pwr. We also have elect. heat so power fluctuates from nill in the summer to massive in the winter. I also have made sure that there has been something on that uses about the same as the grow so it has been the same since I moved in.
