once you get the basics (barre chord tonic on the low E, then once with it on 4th, open chords, 7ths, etc., sorry my music theory sucks), basic pentatonic scale if yer playing blues, learn how to bend a string and get vibrato), check out the "signature licks" books by Hal & Leonard. picked up an awesome Hendrix one, they come with a CD, you get full tablulature in the book (i.e. you don't have to read music), plus regular music notation (help you learn to read), plus a CD with the tunes done at regular speed in digestible chunks PLUS same played at half speed. you don't have to read music, it'll get you goin, and it's fun as hell. slip the disc in your computer and work with it. they even have a Steve Vai one, i'm readin it, sez comes w. actual backing tracks from Passion and Warfare and Sex and Religion, w. input from Steve himself ... ain't cheap but niiiiice, give you something to play with while you grind the basics too.

p.s. if you can play pentatonic in the key of E or the key of A, bend a 4th to a 5th and a flatted 7th to an 8th, a 2nd to a minor or major 3rd and do hammer-ons you've got 80% of rock/blues covered :D then it's where you wanna take it ... take the advice of all the pros ("steal licks from everybody") and feel the music (can youi tell i got the tunes and the buzz on :rasta:)

I want to learn to play electric guitar. Is there any good instructional dvd's for beginners? I want to play a fender strat. Any suggestions??...

I would not recommend any dvds as they are not sufficient.

Try these books:
Chord Chemistry - Ted Greene
A Guide to chords, scales, and arpeggios - al di meola
The guitar book - carl fisher publishing forget the author to lazy to look for it cover looks like someone looking at a guitar on acid.

These are the best music websites:
www.zentao.com/guitar
www.dolmetsch.com (might be .org)

Do not take the advice of the person who said don't get a tuner. You will be playing out of tune the entire time.

You need This stuff:
TUNER
metronome
picks (I recommend Fender California Clears Heavy. Don't bother on the $1 per pick ones)
string winder
Boss Overdrive pedal (if your amp doesn't have overdrive setting) ~$30
Dunlop formula 57 cleaning solution. (cleans grime off your guitar)
amp
guitar

my advice is to not get gear envy and continue to buy stuff you don't need. I can make a cheapo $75 guitar sound better than a $3000 one. Tone comes from the hands, the mind, and the soul.

if you get tired of the neighbours complaining about the noise and want to pick up on some theory, harmony, chord melody and stuff, try this: http://www.amazon.com/Joe-Pass-Guitar-Style-Presents/dp/1562220055#noop. was listening to some of joe's stuff the other night, great jazz solo and accompaniment. and, his is an interesting story, time spent in synanon breaking his addiction. a great guitar talent. wish lenny breau put out a book like that ...
