Has there ever been a legal challenge to the use of the word "marijuana" in law? It'd be like having a law against carry a concealed "heater". Slang terms are fine and I don't care what anyone calls it, but shouldn't the laws be accurate? Most laws/gub'ment regs have their first section with definitions of terms used in the act. Do any of these "drug" laws define marijuana as the cannabis sativa plant, or parts thereof? I'm sure some do, but what about laws that don't? Need to get a filthy greasy lawyer on that.

I don't understand why a term is so important.

I smoke some pot in the morning when I wake up if I have nothing important to do that day. I might smoke some weed before lunch, and in the evening I like to relax and play some video games smoking a joint of some nice marijuana.

Sometimes before bed though, I smoke a little nug to help me fall asleep.
And if I'm feeling a little crazy and staying up past my bedtime, I might smoke some herb and see what movies are on late at night.

All of this pales in comparison of course to smoking some bud with friends.

It's all the same.
To me, the only time it annoys me when people refer to cannabis using a certain slang is the way they say it.
Like when they say "dank nugs" attempting to sound cool or cultured in the world of cannabis. However if someone is just using a slang term casually its no big deal. Call it pot, call it weed, its still cannabis to me.

But I am a stoner reminiscing about the days of old. :rasta:

True. If you'll check your quote of my post, it says 'ex-stoner;' which disqualifies you in the description. Point taken none-the-less...

In my experience at least, pot is an outsider term for cannabis. Sounds like something someone's out-of-touch dad or a police officer would call the substance.

I don't have a problem with any of the common names including marijuana, it is just a name. I don't typically use the term pot myself but don't have a problem with it either. What I do have a problem with are the fools that call every scrap of herb they see skunk or diesel without knowing what the **** it is! :wallbash:

In my experience, most stoners rarely call it marijuana. Cannabis is mostly called marijuana by non-stoners or newbies.

I guess it would all depend everyone's experiences then. For instance, my dad (who is incredibly strict, glad I didn't have to grow up living with him) refers to it as dope.
You been smoking dope son? That sorta thing. Nobody I know has ever called it dope, or said "lets go smoke some dope". So dope is something that irritates me, but then again thats because I don't think anyone refers to pot/weed/bud/nug/cannabis/marijuana/herb/WHATEVER as dope. At least not around here. :)

I read that the term Marijuana was adopted by the US reefer-madness ppl to link it to lazy Mexicans who were becoming too confident and prominant in America. It was used as an excuse to round them up and arrest them (Reefer Nation book).

These days, I view it the same way as the word "nig*er". It can and is used to criticize and belittle if used by the wrong people. They can say, "well, you call it that amongst yourselves", but the way they say is it offensive and has negative connotations.

So I say, unless you're a smoker, don't refer to it as Marijuana. It's OUR WORD! They have no right to use it.

cannabis is the name of the plant, marijuana is the name of the plant when processed/used as a drug

piggy backing off of this, yeah cannabis is the name of the plant, but marijuana is the name it has in south america. just as it has many names in different continents.

and please let us not forget it is not a drug, nor does it have to be "processed" like a drug. the only thing you have to do with cannabis is make sure it is dried properly (meaning to say that, if drying something makes it a drug, than most of us have had drugs in our kitchen cabinets way before cannabis!!)

please remember, drugs have to be processed (cocaine, tylenol, oxycontin, crystal meth, methadone, codine). cannabis is a plant, it grows. and lets make real distinctions about these things. jsut because it has medicinal purposes does not automatically make it a drug.

if it grows, then it is what it is, if its processed, well then its up to you to believe the people pushing it to you.

People even refer to legal pills with pejoratives though. So while, I agree, with you in that I don't like it being called "marijuana", I know some people that take vicodin and call it "vikes" or "vics", antidepressants as "happy pills", and adderal as "baby coke." My point is that almost every drug out there has a pejorative. It's not just cannabis, so that makes me feel better for some reason.

The name of weed is really not a big deal to me. I have used many words to "name" our favorite plant; past and present. Some of us old hippys use to call it dope. As in...
