Love my BIG fan leaves. Took 4 WL - AK's, took and pruned fan leaves off to and left 2 alone. the 2 left alone had 4+ grams each. I will never cut again and never in bud. ALTHOUGH..... I will cut lower branches do to the fact i dont want pea sized buds down low only in veg.

Nothing is more powerfull, nor more capable of producing the full spectrum of psychoactive and depressive compounds in cannabis then the SUN.

That's not true, man. The sun has a limited and measurable amount that hits the earth. It's called insolation and where I am, it's about 1kW / square meter. You can easily go beyond that if you want to with indoor lighting. There is a difference in spectrum, though.

Have you ever heard of farmers trimming leaves of crops?

Tomato Pruning

Fruit Tree Pruning
I think this one is just a matter of degree. There is such a thing as too much, but it definitely helps to some degree to ensure that the main buds are able to develop to max potential.

Peace out

itsallover - i totally agree with your post earlier in the thread :) - about your links - neither of those links apply to trimming leaves really. tomatoes are pruned by removing sideshoots in order to grow them as a vin. fruit trees are pruned in winter when dormant UNLESS you want to reduce the vigor and then you prune in summer when they are in leaf.

i dont remove healthy fan leaves.

I guess I am thinking about pruning more than trimming leaves. Sorry about my confusion leading to an unnecessary post...

I'd say it's strain dependent or growing style, but mostly no...I'd leave them...maybe, and I mean maybe if I was making a shrub outdoors that was meant to grow wide and some of the underneath that I wanted to grow out after it starts up...and these sites were blocked by some fan leaves...then ya.....but other than that, plants look ugly and don't seem to yield more...and the end bud isn't any better looking, they just put out more leaf.

THC production is MAXIMUM at night, when their is no sun. Why would letting more sun get to the buds increase THC production then? it wouldnt.

Infact as far as i know (please correct me if im wrong) the specific rays of light from an HPS or the SUN actually break down THC content... the fact the carb producing fan leaves ON the bud would be charging hard and fueling the buds their attached to would be why people see bigger buds when their left in the light hotspots.

Actually yes. When growing table grapes, it is common to remove shaded leaves inside the trellis (to allow for better air movement) that are near or touching the fruit (to reduce scarring on the berries).

BUT, I would never remove any fan leaves on this plant unless it was too low to get any light, ready to fall, or just had to go due to an annoying position.

I'm with cotton mouth. I don;t even removed damaged leafs until they are ready to come off. If you slightly bend fan leaves they can snap off. Good ones can take the pressure, bad ond come off with little effort.

The sun is more powerfull then your HPS deal with it. it also has a much greater capacity to produce the full spectrum of cannibinoids.

I'm not talking about it getting filtered before it gets to earth, i see what your saying your pointing out the exception to the rule i understand that. In my climate the sun fucking unstoppable.

Your talking about fighting mould, their not removed to get light below them are we?

Thats a different topic and its climate specific.

The exception to the rule? I mean 1 kW/sq. meter is actually the exception to the rule, being on the higher end. I could exceed that with indoor lighting (even when considering inefficiency), that's what I'm saying, and it's just the facts. I don't see where you get off thinking I'm saying this out of being offended that "it's more powerful than my HPS" and I can't "deal with it." I like the sun as much as the next guy man.

But anyway can you link me to some info about the sun having a "greater capacity to produce the full spectrum of cannabinoids" than HID lighting?
Thanks man!

I only remove fan leaves if they are shading a big budsite, after all, THC is produced from the light striking the disc at the base of the bubble on capitate-stalked trichomes, so if they aren't lit directly, they will not be as strong.

I pluck fan leaves from sites that have started to extend a branch...if done correctly and the timing is correct the side branches will catch up to the main top...however I only do this with nice tight squat plants...my JTR haze and AK47 sativa pheno is not stripped of leaves due to the stretching...

A 1000 watt bulb produces about 140k lumens from 1 foot away. 1 foot = fried crispy buds. 2 feet away that 1000 watt bulb only produces 29k lumens (still probably fried crispy buds). The sun gets 50-100k lumens to the entire plant. Doesn't that make the sun stronger?
I mean..technically I guess you can say, "oh, well I was only saying I could produce more lumens," But to say that in context to growing a plant is very misleading since they are not usable.

Oh yeah... I vote LEAVE EM

I hear you on that man. Big dropoff for HIDs with distance. The sun maintains intensity throughout the plant, extra few feet doesn't matter much when it's already traveled millions of miles.
Thanks for the run-thru!

No, not healthy leaves, not until all the juice has been sucked out of them by my flush. I love the results when the plant knows its finished.. something kicks in that really polishes off the finished product.

But that might just be because I never need to.. my keeper phenos have a nice leaf/bud ratio and I top/squeeze them so they spread nicely, lots of light penetration.. I've had leafy strains before but never fell in love with the smoke..

Anyways its probably more productive to trim the blocked lower buds instead of the fan leaves.

This was my first grow ever. And, at someone else's advice, I removed ALL the fan leaves just as buds were beginning to show. I will NEVER do this agian!!! It was like the entire plant went into a shock (and, probably did)!! The buds quit growing... there were no more new buds for a long time... the once beautiful girl looked like $hit!!! She acted as if she were a man who was trying to impregnate a woman; and just before he blew his load, someone took a pair of pruning shears and lopped off his nut sack!!! :yoinks: Fellas (of which I am one), let that sit and marinate in your brain for a moment!! :jawdrop:
 Who told you to do that, somene on the internet or someont irl? Such a mean thing to do.. What was their rationalization?

First, I have to say that when I realized how bad it had f*cked things up, it was not funny... not at all!!! But, after I got over wanting to rip this guy's head off and sh*t down his neck, I tried to see something good in what had happened. And, I did.... unless it is absolutely necessary, LEAVE THE F*CKING FAN LEAVES ALONE!!!!!!!!!!

The guy who told me this was a local idiot!! He claimed that he had been secretly growing... "quite successfully" for over 20 years. BULLSH*T!!!!!!! And, he said that if I left the fan leaves on, the plant's energy would all go into keeping the leaves healthy and none into bud production. BULLSH*T!!!!!!!! It went against everything that I had been taught or learned about vegetables and flowers. But, I'd never grown bud before. So, I listened to the "more experienced and therefore more knowledgeable (BULLSH*T!!!!!!!)" guy!! After I told him that I had cut all the fan leaves off, he said that I did good and would have some monster buds. BULLLLLLLLSH*TTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The bud growth slowed WAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY down. And, the new bud production came to a grinding halt!!!!!

This was a lesson that I will NEVER forget!!!!!!!

It's alright.... you all can go ahead and get a good laugh out of it... especially if you are stoked! And, you can say want... and, you can do what you want to do... to you own plants! As for mine... I'd cut a SOB for touching mine!!! ;) :) ;)
