I don't think ADD is a viable "problem" in the slightest bit. I think the problem being covered up with the ADD distraction con is the lack of varied, individual-appropriate education for millions of varied, unique people. This country has a problem with "blanketing." Kid doesn't pay attention in school? Don't bother with homeschool, or montesory (sp?) school, or alternative routes---Hell, don't bother trying to find what learning environment & techniques even work for the kid at all, just shove pills down their throat instead.
I don't have "ADD", but I can tell you, being someone who's been to both public & private schools, that as unencouraging, listless, lethargic & outright dull as the government-run public schools' classes are, it's no fucking wonder the highest graduation rates & lowest drop-out rates are in private schools & alternative learning situations. At least private schools, different learning structures, etc have the balls to offer different ways of presenting the aspect of learning, not just the cirriculum.
Not every kid is satisified with being plopped at a desk with a text book being told to read pages 134-200. Everyone has to be stimulated to some degree or another to learn, and the cut & dry American government way just doesn't cut it. Not enough stimulation for most folks.
