Do you consider air travel expensive/or take it for granted?

To me, air travel is something I consider a luxury, expensive thing to do, whatever you want to call it and I think it is something taken for granted by many.

I have relatives that live all the way across the country, both are seasoned air travelers, one flies out for work every few weeks (paid for by his company), the other has in the post gone on inter-continenetal flights several times a year for his job. As a caveat, I think the latter one may have paid for his own air travel for some of those trips but not all.

Both are always urging me to come out for visits at least once a year, every year. Since they both live in different states that would be two separate trips.

I go online and look at airfares, and than factor in the costs of checking my bags, parking, etc...etc....and the cost of a trip to see each one approaches $700.00 to $1000.00 easily. Not an amount that would make or break me, but it's also an amount that would set me back in terms of savings, paying off bills etc...and at that point I stop and think that while I love them both as family, I am not willing to incur more debt or miss an opportunity to pay down debt by going to see them.

This all got me to thinking about the title of the OP...does anyone else think that air travel is an expensive thing to do and is something that is taken for granted by many "Oh, well just hop on a plane and see me".

Used to travel a lot back in the day when I was an aquaculture tech. To me air travel was part of the biz. Had to travel to Thailand, Canada, Alaska, Brazil, just about everywhere in the world where there were fish farms. This was before airlines were squeezing seat areas down to sardine size. Flying today has to be one of the most uncomfortable ways to travel now and costs are double or triple what they were then. Plus with bag charges, screening, etc. Homeland Sec. is just part of the problem. Then you have to consider terror attacks too, though that hasn't happened yet.
Then, on top of that, if you have metal implants like I have, you can expect to be x-rayed every time you want to fly. Screeners can be real a**h**** when it comes to that.

It's hugely expensive.. Even more so when u have to pay for family to travel with u. I go on trips when I'm flush, when I'm not so flush... I make phone calls.
Plus, unless,u spring for first class air travel is miserable. 300 cranky primates cramped into a box for 5-6 hours at a clip.
Ughhh.. No thanks. I need a private jet. Hopefully I'll hit the powerball:).

you can fly across the US for 150$ and around the world for less than a thousand.

That's amazingly inexpensive considering what it would have cost to travel that far if you

had attempted it any time before modern air travel.

We just flew to New York from Cali and the tickets were almost 600 for us round trip, I thought that was pretty reasonable. 150 bucks?? I would have loved to find a flight that cheap?!?

Out of curiosity I just plugged in BOS to LAX and they had many flights for around $350. I'm sure if I looked harder I could find some cheaper flights. Many deals to be found out there!

I would consider travel a luxury as it can be pricey but airfare is just one cost another is hotel/motel/house and food is a biggy because most of your meals will be eating out. Now also depends where you travel New York, Tokyo, Monaco, India. Malaysia, and so on; money goes a long way in certain parts of the world. I still need to travel a lot...

I just got a non stop flight on delta from Ny to Portland for 175 with tax included.

and then non stop from Portland to Maui for 195$

Ive payed more than 600 one way in the past though. I think flying in the middle of the week and not around holidays helps.

I prefer to drive.....yeehaw...

Yep.

9-11 brought with it a host of travel restrictions. The TSA bullsh.t is a big part of that.

I used to enjoy flying.

Last time I flew ... 2006.

With driving, there's the possibility of a troll (state highway cop, or local cop) under a bridge.

With flying, the troll is guaranteed, though usually nicer than the cop trolls.

About $4K roundtrip to New Zealand.

Would enjoy going skiing at Mt. Roopahuu but you pretty much need a Champagne budget for that.

There's a market for somebody- want some Herb for the trip, but don't want to carry it through the airport.

Isn't this what Uber was invented for ? :woohoo:

It's longer but I prefer riding the rails...
Amtrack has a restaurant car, Bar car, observation (glass topped) car & seats that fit big folks.

Flying has become a chore with all the restrictions put in place since George W. Bush (& Larry Silverstein) knocked down the towers.

For us, flying is big deal & pretty expensive. Mrs. & I have only flown together 4 times in 30+ yrs. This trip in May is our first big trip since honeymoon, although we've gone out West twice.

I agree about rail travel, however the constant stops really turns me off. I wish there was more express trips.

As far as airfare. You can still find some good deals, but it's not anything like it was 5-10 years ago. It always has been and always will be cheaper to fly somewhere when you don't need to be there on a certain day and leave a certain day. Flexible schedule can change that $500 airfare to $300...

Also direct flights save money, even if the fare is priced higher than a flight with a transfer, as each transfer incurs more taxes n surcharges. I realize direct flights are not an option for everyone. We have to drive almost 4 hours to get direct flights around the country...

I wish we had more options for high speed rail travel in the US. Europe and Asia are way ahead of us there.

I'm excited about the whole Hyperloop concept. I hope the people working on it can make it work. A working Hyperloop would change everything in terms of travel.

Driving is tops for me. I also really like Amtrak, very chill way to travel. The trick is to treat the train ride as part of the experience. If you are too antsy to get to your destination you'll hate it. I like to bring some edibles to make it interesting.
