hey man, if thats what its built for, then I'm sure it'll do something good.

Let us know how much it helps, I'd love to know

Yeah similar, except I made mine much bigger. Longer, and way fatter with more insulation, inner tube is same though.

Works exactly the same as a car muffler, read the rest of the thread for detailed workings

I will absolutely help. In my experience the muffler works best on the swooshing sound. Make it as large as you can, the bigger the better I reckon.

I made mine inside a cardboard box filled with insulation. Not very small, but it just looks like storage boxes from the outside, its great

perhaps this would be perfect for venting to an attic?

i dont mean to hijack but imagine a whole closet enclosed, say 2.5' x 7' x 8' - i wonder a. how much fan and b. how much filter, and then of course c. how much muffler? :D

This really has great possibilities! :)

Hello!

I have been forced to make my ventilation [1060 cm/h = 625 cf/m] as quiet as humanly possible (i will vent out the window) and the best solution to this problem seems to be - muffler. I'm going to show you how i made my muffler in half a day with very little expences. Oh, and it accualy works!

Excuse me while i light my spliff....

oh gotta roll it first.

Things stoner needs:

- 200L plastic container ( 53 gallon) - 12 eur
- metalic net - 14 eur
- silicone and silicone gun - 7eur
- aluminium tape - 7eur
- glasswoll - 20eur
-------------------------------
60eur = 75 $

but in most cases you've got silicone, tape and woll at home. I even had a piece of net but wast big enough.

This is the gear;

I cuted two pieces of tube so i can easly adjust the correct needed radius.

The rolled net is a little longer than the container.

We fix it in with those little endings...

The top of my bin is not thick enough so plastic didnt cut well. Fix it with some duct tape ... taping the cracks, sharp edges and strange formations :) --- | if you cant fix it with duct tape, you havent used enough :p |

Bottom Works Better :)

Tape it inside and outside... as much as will be looking out on each side + a little extra!

If you have noone to help you, ask you'r shoe!

tape tape tape

Inside

Siliconing

Spray with some stelex or someting.... to form it easily and goes off hands better.

My silicone drys to touch in 10 minutes. The alu tape holds the net just well.

It would be wise to wait for tomorrow but what the hell... USE GLOVES and mask ur mouth !!!

Dont push woll too tight. Not too loosy as well. I used only half of woll that seem same size as container when packed from factory...

Now also use silicone at the top. No leaks allowed!!!

This was testing area. I was suprised. The noise coming out of the tube is like beeing in a really big server room with big nooooooiseeee..... when i plugged this muffler NOTHING but air came on the other side. NOTHING not a tiny little bittle jiffy biffy sound. I hope i'll put it in use tomorrow... :) yaaay!!!.... Grow on!

Thanks to scegy for the inspiration!!

Be safe,
Tree

very good guide
i was thinking something similar
inspired by the concept of an car exhaust silencer
my ducting is 125 mm and i have some 300 mm tube around
ill just make it a bit longer but in same design

I was wondering if this would work the same in enclosing my fan , or if it could be dangerous because of heat or fire or something . I was thinking possibly muffle the fan than go threw muffler and out . Or just fan muffler possibly . What do think?

im wondering if you could use a muffler with a inner diameter(where the air flows through) larger than the size of the fan in order to not restrict the flow as much but still get the dampening. SO for a 6" fan the inner diameter for airflow in the muffler would be 8". If using a 4" fan make the inner diameter in the muffler 6". Does that make sense?

if the inner diameter is the same size as the fan it won't restrict the airflow

I totally get replacing a piece of duct with muffler, however what if there was not duct to begin with, for example a fan sitting on a filter.

thats what im wondering. Say you put a foot long 6"duct on a fan sitting on a filter, instead of a foot long, inner 6" diameter muffler, doesnt that slow down the airflow?

thanks for responding.

So, I know this post is old, but I'm thinking of building something very similar for my grow.

The door into the room is also where the exhaust fan is. The problem I'm running into is that the fan is vibrating the entire door noticeable from the outside. This is clearly no good.

My theory was proved yesterday when I tested the vibrations of the cab when the fan is still on, but NOT in the hole I cut in the door. Guess what, 0 vibrations.

Next problem is that the fan is loud and I need it muffled. My question is this - can I put the fan IN the insulated container with the scrubber outside the container. The order being: Scrubber -> Door -> Container top -> Fan -> Container bottom.

thoughts?

I reckon that would work pretty well, the actual fan and motor being insulated as well as the wind noise.

Besgt way to find out is to give it a try

OK keep laughter to a minimum. All I can say is fever, panic, credit cards and powertools are a bad combination.

But it worked. As long as I kept everyone out of the garage.

I built one from a nice thick television cardboard box, inside the air circuited round a middle divider, all lined with 2 layers of wood floor underlayer tiles, it makes a massive difference...Carbon filter on the other end.

Insulated ducting makes a big difference too, I may try some DIY lagging on it now !

Just spotted this thread pop up again, as I have just grabbed my cameraphone piccies from the last year... sorry about the quality, but you get the idea. Air goes in top right, via the silver 6" duct, turns right, when it gets to the LHS, it turns, goes down into lower section [where it says SONY] and exits into window area near the white label. Really effective mod, done for pennies. Green fiber wood floor underlay tiles were from Leroy Merlin.

I made one just like the trashcan thing only I used a giant rubbermaid tote (30? gal). Would never know there was a 790cfm vortex on the other side of the wall.

Hi guys. I just built one like he did but with a small difference. I read that fiber glass might lead to some respiratory problems so I opted for a sound insulation foam that I found at the local store for about 20$.

Thanks for the post, I found it very useful!
