Thanks for the quick reply. I see you have yours after the fan. How did you set up your ducting before the fan? Do you use a carbon filter before the fan?

Thanks again!

That grow no longer exist, but the radius of the fan -20cm/8inch was the same as on carbon scrubber so I just used the apropriate sound isolated hose.

i wonder how much a muffler like this would slow the airflow down. im gonna build one. i think the large size of the garbage can would make up for the resistance. more surface area.

Alright Treehugger, you may have just started a revolution.

This is absolutely beautiful.

Just picked up all the items myself and am going to make a project out of it this wknd. I want NO sound whatsoever, not just muffled whooshing.

I did end up getting the R11 sound insulation. Cancerous maybe, but hopefully it wont be too long i'll need to take this route.

The things we do to medicate, i swear... ironic in some cases :bashhead:

Just tonight I built a smaller version of this with only a 5 gal. bucket & lid. Needed it to cut the fan noise on my small cab. Was surprised at how well it worked to cut the air flow/fan noise....Great idea!!!
So, it even helps in this configuration:
cab>>>muffler>>>ducting to attic>>>fan>>>carbon filter
I would say the cab now runs 50% quieter....maybe better.

I built one from a nice thick television cardboard box, inside the air circuited round a middle divider, all lined with 2 layers of wood floor underlayer tiles, it makes a massive difference...Carbon filter on the other end.

Insulated ducting makes a big difference too, I may try some DIY lagging on it now !

Damn I love this site. Love seeing the big fancy growrooms with all the flash gears, but what really blows my mind is the diy ingenuity.

Anyhoo.....I was stoned and surfing last night and came across this thread and couldnt believe I hadn't earlier, considering my only being able to run my fans at half speed cos of the volume, even then they are uncomfortably loud for my liking, seeings as my cab is only like 5 feet from my neighbours bed. So I'm battling high temps and jet engine sounds.

This is what I made this morning in less than an hour only with stuff that was llying round my house (I've been doing some home reno so I got some insulation left over)

squse the shitty photos, far too exctited to be artistic

what secret muffler and cannabis grow box?

This is just the exhaust from my diy cooltube which is a pretty small 100mm fan attatched to pvc piping- the difference it made was amazing.
Next on the agenda is the exhaust from the main cab fan- same thing only bigger I guess. Cant wait!

Maybe an answer to an alternative to the fiberglass... Nu-Foam... it says its flame retardant... doesn't yellow or disintegrate... resists mildew and comes in a roll? it's kind of pricey but might be worth it if you need to go small...

I went to a foam mattress factory down the road and bought a big bag of foam off-cuts for 10 bucks. It filled a huge box which I now use as my main exhaust muffler

I used "Poly-Fil®" brand polyester batting from the sewing store. Commonly used for quilts, pillows, stuffed animals etc. Cheap and it works great.

Yeah man, I reckon you could fill it with just about anyhting

Here's a 6" x 36" muffler i made ($40) from common hvac duct parts from HD filled with poly-fill. It works great & cut down the exhaust noise by at least 50%.

I will absolutely help. In my experience the muffler works best on the swooshing sound. Make it as large as you can, the bigger the better I reckon.

I made mine inside a cardboard box filled with insulation. Not very small, but it just looks like storage boxes from the outside, its great
