DIY Aero Cloner the EZ-Cloner Replica in 10 Easy Steps!

S

Hey everyone, don't want to be negative here.... but I think people thinking about making this as their answer to cloning should know, it might not work. For whatever reason. And all your clones will be toast. Kinda sucks when you got all your cookies in the cloner and they don't root... major set backs... i recently lost my batch of Alpha Diesel... just some food for thought people.

New Idea

Ok, so i recently started my first grow and have 6 mom candidates (from bagseed) starting in a box i made. I threw together a bubble cloner from parts i had from a failed mycological experiment and tried to root the top-cuttings i took also wanting to to verify sex. Well it's goin on two weeks and no signs of roots and only one of the six cuttings doesn't have at least some withered parts. Well i've decided to try a different approach. I came across this thread looking for more information on taking cuttings and must say i've contemplated doin the same thing only different :) I've ordered an ultrasonic fogger-head and am awaiting it's arrival to commence my cloner operations. There are larger units (click search to the right of the page and type "nutramist" under product search) but I'm keeping it very small as i'm doin a micro-grow for personal use only. I figure this may be as good if not better than the "sprayer" approach and the solution is automatically sterilized in the process. Also it's a simpler process and is cheaper in cost and labor compared to pumps/pvc/mister heads. Just thought i'd share the idea with the community and i'll try to get some pics and a report when i get the thing running...

Jah bless...

and by the way, use straight un-ph'd water.
Does this apply for everyone? What's your tap pH/EC? Mine has a very low EC but mid-8 pH.

Is it the extra phosphoric acid I'm trying to avoid, or is it that it doesn't matter?

welp, took 15 days for all 45 out of 47 of my clones to fully root.

welp, took 15 days for all 45 out of 47 of my clones to fully root.

15 days and i have 100% success rate? :joint: a couple have nubs just starting out, but by tomorrow, those 2 will have roots like the others....

once these suckers are transplanted, ill have ALOT more to stick in there..

I know it's strain-dependent and all, but isn't 15 days generally considered a pretty lengthy time in these aero-cloners? What are your rez temperatures?

I think fuzygrowth and a couple of others have tried it already. I forgot what the outcome was but I lost interest in it after a while.

(The float donut helps, BTW.)

I wanted to drop in here and say thanks to the original poster and all else who provided info and helped increase the popularity of this thread. Otherwise, i wouldn't have found it !!!

I made mine cloner yesterday:
1. I originally used the spinning misters because the green, stationary ones were out of stock.... I recommend NOT using the spinners.
2. My Sterlite brand from Wally world is leaking like a sieve. I plan on hot gluing a drip edge to the inside of the top... should clear that issue up.
3. Running 24-7 really warms up the water and will probably end up in stem rot if kept up. A timer seems crucial.

I only built this thing a couple days ago so cannot attest to a success rate, but I already see signs of improvement. I've tried tons of different methods of cloning and the best rate I've had is about 70%. Two days in with no humidity dome, these cuts are looking healthy and are not flopped over like they always do for me.

Thanks again !

Some may want to try this

Some may want to try this

I made my own fog aero-cloner. I bought a $30 single-head ultrasonic fog unit from futuregarden.com (they have teflon-coated disks for use with hydo nutes.) While i was waiting for it to arrive (it was backordered) i found some similar "halloween" fog units on sale and a local grocery store (Kroger) for less than $13 each. I bought two knowing that i could only use them in plain water, but as that is all i'm using for rooting it was a perfect buy. I may go back and buy the rest they have, maybe on nov 1st when the price may drop even further. I recieved my futuregarden unit before i took new cuttings and made my fog cloner to replace my bubble-cloner. I started with just the one unit on a short-cycle timer but about holf the cuttings started to go limp so put in one of the weaker halloween units. Much better but a few on the periphery cuts still limp. In goes the other fog-head and a spacer to put them a littlle closer to the surface of the water. Now all the cuttings have perked-up. The foggers also keep the water warm in the cool closet they are in. Little cuts hanging in a thick cloud of warm fog. 100% humidity/100% aeration. It took at least 12 days for the bubbler to show root nubs. These have been in fog 4 days and looking a little better than the ones in bubbler did. Will post updates later.

Fog-cloner update

Fog-cloner update

Ok so after a week in the fog-cloner half of the cuts i took (12) had rooted enough(1-2 inches of root with some showing branching air-roots) to put in my coco-coir/perlite medium. A couple were ready in only 5 days, but i waited a couple more days to get at least half transplanted this weekend!! I have noticed no difference as to whether the cuts are from soft stems are woody ones. I've taken cuts from both and both root out well in the fogger! Maybe i will finally be successful at taking a cutting of that rare limon tree we inherited from my wife's late grandmother...

about how much vertical space do you need to pull one of these off. i want to make at least a 40-50 site cloner, but i dont want it to be too big. are there any lower profile or shorter containers that could be used?

hi guy, there's more than one way to skin a cat my man.

first, you don't need to complicate things with all that plumbing.
you can just build one that works as a SWC (shallow water culture).

so, in your case, you could use one of those Rubbermaid underbed
storage containers, you'd just want to duct tape the outside to keep
light out.

heres a couple of pics of the one i built before i found this site and a
link to the thread if you're interested.
my cheap & easy diy cloner

as you can see, it's pretty shallow.

just built myself a 70-site rig

just built myself a 70-site rig

Thanks KingRalph for this excellent DIY. Saved me at least 300 bucks. I'm using a 35 gallon rubbermaid w/ a 600 GPH pump. I used about 25 misters. It might be a bit overkill, but I don't think more mist is going to hurt anything.
On w/ pics...

I used net cups because the 2" ezclone inserts would fall through otherwise. I am probably going to cut the net part off though. Seems like the roots will get tangled. And ya, I did glue them in. Wanted to make sure the thing didn't leak. I don't know if thats a good thing or bad thing.

its probably a bad thing that you glued them in.. i'd cut the bottoms off.. you dont want the roots gettin tangled into the net pot... also, you should have it so that you can pull the entire puck out. hopefully you didnt glue it all in.. next time get a 1-3/4" hole cutter so that your 2" ezclone inserts will fit in nice and snug.. fuck the net pot...

so funny... i told my buddy to use a 1-3/4" hole saw, but for some reason he insisted on using a 2" and then hot-gluing around all the edges so the pucks would fit in snnug.. took him about 3 hours and a bag of glue sticks

once again thats a 1-3/4" hole saw, people

!

I used a Sterilite at first, and it leaked horrible... Went to Home Depot and got a 54gal XL tub and turned the lid upside down, it sits underneath the lip and works perfectly.. better than the fuckin EZ cloner itself

i have all the pvc, but cant find the female connector. could someone post a closeup or link for what that looks like exactly? im guessing it is just screwing on to your pump?

i have 10 360 degree misters and was wondering if a 350 g pump up to the around 400 g pumps would work fine? thinking about 40-50 sites.

we found a fogger at a petstore and it cost 60 bucks. i thought about buying it and experimenting with it to see if the fog would work. i really didnt know how it worked so i left it alone. 100% humidity and good air is defintely good. anyone know how they work?

could this all be made out of cpvc as well?

anyone found any other good neoprene locations? i have heard the 1 3/4" holesaw idea, but that is if you are getting the 2 inch plugs right?

are the ez clone 2 inch plugs working for people? i read on a review that they were too stif or something, crushing the stalks? may have been bs, just wondering what results people are having.

thanks for the thread, good info and lots of money saved. this thing might save my crop of plants im nursing back to health. dont know what went wrong, but things look better now.
