More info on electronic ballasts

For us growers electronic/digital ballasts seem to be quite new. However, they have been used for years in aquarium and commercial lighting and are readily available through good commercial lighting stores. Their advantages are purportedly that they are much cooler, aren't as noisy becuase they run at a much higher Hz which is apparently quiter and they are much lighter as they don't have as much in them.

Like some posts have already noted, the hydro shops here in Texas have had major problems with them breaking down. In fact, Texas Hydroponics has over 60 of them in their backroom that have been returned faulty (and that is just at this one location!). Having said all that, I discussed these ballasts with some VERY informed people at A to T Lamps in Lewisville, TX. They are a major commercial lighting supplier that also carries HID lighting setups. By the way, they have the best prices I have found anywhere on the net for HID's and they aren't a hydro shop, so scrutiny from John Q. Law should be quite a bit less. Anyway, they informed me about these ballasts being used for years in aquarium lighting with great results! They claim that they haven't had the problems with them that the hydro shops report. They beauty of dealing with these guys is that they can put together any combination of ballast/reflector/bulb that you could possibly ask for and their prices are very, very competitive.

They do most of their business on Ebay and over the net at their website (which is atotlamps.com). They have an 800 number listed there and are very friendly to talk to on the phone. You guys might want to check them out. Just a tip!

i have taken to buying low bay security lighting and "remoting" the ballast myself, relatively simple to do and safe as long as u are careful with ur wiring and make sure u take all precautions. This is a great way to save, for example, in a hydro shop over here, a 400w hps complete reflector and all would be minimum of 150 pounds brand new, but if i buy a low bay security light from a normal electrical supplies shop, it costs me 58 pounds. then 5 for a box which is suitable to enclose the ballast after i take it out from the hood.and some quality cable and connectors to attach the ballast. then ur away, and in 9 months or so when u need a new bulb, u buy a bulb that is more suited to horticulture, but normal hps r fine anyway. as long as u know what u r doing and dont mess about with any wires that u dont need to, and u meake sure all ur wiring is sound this is much more sensible IMHO than dropping a fortune on expensive lights from a hydro shop. of course once u get experienced or have more money to spend its all good to buy "proper" growlights, but doing it my way saves pennies to start. Saying this, i bought a 1000watter from the growshop a few weeks back, lol

Are you talking about a digital ballast or a regular ballast?

I would think that most the problem's is from trying to save money on a few key item's and they just fail after time, but what do I know.
It would be a very nice addition to the room and save abit on the power bill I am sure.

grow safe.
