DIESEL GENERATOR, (as your primary power source)

Thanks for all the input. I live in an area where it is the norm to live off the grid and many people run there houses off of a propane generator and lots of fuel companies in the Green Rush up here in Northern cali are glad to make a buck. However the option of being able to fill your tank at will is an extreme advantage to diesel that I had not thought of. Pretty much sells me on the diesel. Prolly no big deal if you run a clean show, but some folks up here dont and i read a lot lately about fines that are being stuck on people for environmental contamination when Jonny law comes down on um. good stuff thanks much

i noticed earlier talk about solar and the best prices I've seen by far are at sunelec.com. They tell you how many kwhrs you get per day here in Florida. A 5,100 w system produces 20.5 kwhrs per day where I'm at. The system is roughly 32,000 and youll get 20,000 back with a rebate(at least here you will). check out their site and do some # crunchin. solar is really really expensive and will get questions asked. plus you have to get them permitted. I've been dreaming of going off grid for the longest and a waste veg burning diesel is the best choice I can see.

people 'could' DIY install solar.

i know here in cali the permit is a breeze. they dont even send a guy to the place, they just want the $11 permit fee.
also if you own the home the gov could/would give you alot of money back for installing solar. grants and stuff. tax discounts etc. im sure most ppl dont fit the catagory but its not that expensive in the long run.

So ive read through this entire thread 2 times.

What do guys think of this unit?
Its a john Deere watercooled estimated 30.000 kw but if using the golden rule with the 80% from that, that would give a 24.000 kw. Not bad. Anybody got any experiance with this model or name, i mean John Deere.

http://www.generatorsales.com/order/07259.asp?page=J07259

Excellent thread btw.

it consumes twice as much $$ per 60days of 12/12, than the
isuzu 21-kw estimated output 80% from this is 16.800 watts and it only uses half as much fuel/$$

http://www.generatorsales.com/order/2100GM.asp?page=2100GM

So wouldnt it be better getting two of the isu-21kw producing about 33.600 watts instead of 24kw with the same fuel costs.

The way i see it, i think its a good idea because within a couple of grows u already saved the expenses with the gained watts and see it as a way of it being a bonus

If you can afford it. remember you have maintenance every 500 hours, so if running 24/7 thats every three weeks. You may need a plan to have half the lights on and all running on one genny during maint.

Since these need maint every 500 hours, I wonder if these are continuos use generators designed for running months and months at a time.

If you were going to run this much wattage, why wouldn't you just get 3phase ballasts and rent a commercial warehouse? Probably less money in electricity, and less maintenance.

Yamaha.
from what i understood the maitanence should be fairly easy, just a shitty work. is that correct? and keep the maintainance in order and there should be no problem with the machine for a long time.. and when maintaining i was thinking of something like that what you mentioned with letting the one generator work, while working with the other.

Celcius- I feel more safe this way.In denmark the goverment has its nose in everybody's buisness. And when growing this much weed i dont think it would matter much with the expenses:).
But maybe i have misunderstood the whole maintanence thing?

buy a property with gas wells on it for free gas, and put a small nat-gas genset in the basement... most residences with free hookups dont have meters...or at least they never used to.

What all is involved in "maintaining" a generator unit (periodic 500 hour)?

I have been thinking about this very same idea for the last month and doing my own rescearch, it is funny i have read every post in the entire thread and i came up with pretty much the same ideas, such as hauling the desil in by a tank in the back of my pickup, when i worked for my dad doing heavy construction thats what he used to fill the machines on the job, so i already have one of those, and as far as the timer to turn on and shut off thats not too hard, sound proofing is a must and i have seen people attach mufflers to generators since i was a little kid, alot of hicks around here, lol I was just wondering if anyone has accomplished this setup and how everything is going? as i was planning on moving and finding a house that would work perfect with this exact setup, running 30 600w on light movers over 15 4x8 trays with 6 more 600's over a 24 site ebb n grow setup. thanks, POE

I've seen people talking this generator growop nonsense for almost a decade now.

there is a reason why you haven't ever seen anyone post about running a successful setup on any site or seen any bust anywhere with a generator setup like this.

it doesn't make financial sense, it doesn't make logistic sense, and it sure as fuck doesn't make any logical sense.

unless there is anyone around with a million or two laying around who wants to invest in a money pit business venture you will never see this kind of shit work until we have a breakthrough in the efficiency of combustible fuels and newer types of engines.

Did you see Marijuana inc. on msnbc , half a million dollar dgen was powering up a grow . You don't here about them because who that runs a set up like that wants to screw it up .

Great thread , super info

I am not sure if anyone has mentioned this already, but I am sure they have.

My dad has switched all of our gas generators over to diesel or propane.

The diesel is much more efficient, and still easy to has large quantities of diesel and it not too tough of a switch.

The propane blows both of them out of the water...takes some skills, but it can be done.

I don't know... would you go on some internet forums and talk about your 48k generator grow? I wouldn't... at least some people I know (who do run a 48k genny setup) don't go on the internet and talk about it.

Point well taken, it would make things alot easier not having to deal with answering the question of why are you using more power than the entire street and the whole neighbor hood around you, and it doesent seem that out of reach to me, and i have to believe you wouldnt need a mill or 2 get one going, just my opinion....
