Not a good idea to water with ice cold water.
Keeping roots cooler by burying containers like Wendull said, best resource.

Shade cloth too.

Choose strains that are nuggets vs. feathery (many sativas have that trait)

Thanks Aridbud, in regards to nugget strains my choice is the GSC(thin mint), Master Kush & Blueberry Indies. finishing in 20 gallon pots, for shade cloth are you speaking of the white or black, unless the white shading isnt considered cloth.

Mulch your pots and keep a straw cover on the sand or dirt in your grow to keep sand out of your meds. Gsc comes out hard as a rock in the socal high desert. It was most the garden this year. Gg4 was great with huge nugs but the bottoms were airy. Letting them go a couple extra weeks didn't help em.

Pretty much any strain that is hard inside will be hard in the sun down here. The only nugs that come out airy for me are sativas that would have been airy anyway.

All cookie crosses I have seen are hard as a rock. They love the sun. Goes for cherry pie too.

I said to bury them to keep your roots cool like meadowman said. Black or even fabric pots will get so hot they will Cook your roots.

San berdoo cops will likely harass you. Outdoor growing is banned in San berdoo county!
And don't forget the wind. It can blow pretty hard!

Build a wood fence around them and cover it with shade cloth. Make a secure locked gate. If they can find a reason to bother you , tell them it's a green house.

i don't mean to hijack your thread OP but i didn't wanna start a new one as my questions are somewhat related. i'm gonna do an 18 plant outdoor grow this year in LA county in the santa clarita area. it's technically not the true desert out here. more of an intergrade zone in the foothills between the coastal/inland valley areas south of the mojave but it's still hot and dry with average summer highs in the mid 90's.

we get A LOT of wind out here, strong westerlies and the dry offshore santa ana winds as well. i'm more worried about this stressing out plants than the heat.

how tall should i build a privacy type fence around my grow area? do you think 8 feet or so would be enough to keep most of the strong wind out without blocking the sun?

also do you think it's necessary to build a shade cloth cover over the top? i just want the best quality bud and i don't know if a well acclimated plant in a buried pot or straight in a hole would tolerate the strong midday sun or not.
