Coronavirus.. outlook

The original nine workers in the covid positive unit where my wife works have never tested positive for the virus. With up to forty positive patients at any given time.

Everyone in the building gets tested weekly for the last 10 months. Seems a testament to the effectiveness of proper PPE

Trump Administration purchases additional 100 million doses of COVID-19 investigational vaccine from Pfizer

www.hhs.gov

The Trump Administration, through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Department of Defense (DOD), will purchase an additional 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer.

On Dec. 11, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the vaccine for emergency use and doses began shipping immediately. The vaccine is being provided at no cost to Americans. Vaccine administration costs for private-sector administration partners are covered by healthcare payers: private insurance, Medicare or Medicaid, and HHS’s program to cover COVID-19 costs for the uninsured which is reimbursing the provider at Medicare rates from the provider relief fund.

Under the agreement, Pfizer will manufacture and deliver up to 100 million doses of its SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, BNT162b2, to Government designated locations. Under the terms of the agreement, Pfizer will deliver at least 70 million doses by June 30, 2021, with the balance of the 100 million doses to be delivered no later than July 31, 2021.

The additional doses ordered today provide for a seamless transition from the*first 100 million doses*contracted earlier this year. This represents successful implementation of the U.S. government’s overall strategy to ensure continued availability of safe and effective SARS-CoV-2 vaccines to Americans. *This strategy began in spring 2020 with Operation Warp Speed (OWS) planning and has been consistent in all initial OWS contracts and agreements with industry partners supporting large scale manufacturing of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.

Today’s agreement also includes options for an additional 400 Million doses of the Pfizer vaccine. As part of ongoing coordination, the government and Pfizer are also continuing to discuss potential approaches to further strengthen our partnership and safely expand output and accelerate production.

“Securing more doses from Pfizer and BioNTech for delivery in the second quarter of 2021 further expands our supply of doses across the Operation Warp Speed portfolio,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. “This new federal purchase can give Americans even more confidence that we will have enough supply to vaccinate every American who wants it by June 2021.”

Cases went way down at the beginning of the week and then back up again. Over-75s who want the vaccine should be able to get it (try Redwoods Rural in SoHum) and over-70s should be able to get it soon.

The comments on Redheaded Blackbelt are repetitive but not exactly realistic. I'm in the Eureka-Arcata area with a Trump sign on the house two doors down and a Bernie sign still on the house across the street. I rent and avoid drama, but one of my neighbours freaked out when I accidentally left my car headlights on; I couldn't remember where I put my mask but he wasn't going to stop pounding on my door and yelling until he could see with his own eyes that I was okay and didn't have the 'rona.

I also had a very polite conversation about the weather while waiting at the taco truck a couple of weeks ago. Both of us spoke through clenched teeth and had wild eyes and personal tragedies, but we were bound and determined to have a polite conversation about the weather so we did.

Don't come visit us just yet, but please know that we are busy building a Skywalk at the Eureka Zoo, getting permitted, looking forward to safely reopening HPRC's new Wellness Center in Eureka, and otherwise preparing infrastructure for Cannabis Tourism.

I watched this: https://www.wickandmortar.com/humboldt-cannabis-timeline/ last night and highly recommend it. We love visitors here, we just don't want you to bring home the "wrong kind of souvenir" during a global pandemc.

So yea, the outlook is probably a lot less grim than it usually feels. I'm not going to put my beloved community at unnecessary risk, but the news and the social isolation is making us all a bit nuts. I do my best to keep my opinions about United States politics to myself, under the circumstances, but I've never done that before so I kind of suck.

Lovely, take the jab, buy your freedom. These are some sick people, and they want most people gone.

why do you believe "they want most people gone"? Serious question.

"Most people" is where their fortunes come from, at one point or another in this economic system, isn't it?

The machine of capitalism is oiled by the blood of the workers.
No workers, no machine.

Totally true, but far fewer workers are needed at this point in the digitization and mechanization of everything. Lots of entry-level jobs held by humans are a company investment away from evaporating. Cashier-less checkout at retail or grocery stores is already pretty widespread.

Though in addition to the (often) poorly compensated worker bees, the corporations need to sell their services or trinkets to consumers, or they sink. They seem to keep forgetting that for most of the last 80 years or so.

Right, that principle that Henry Ford realized: if they don't make enough building the product, they won't be able to buy it. Always feels like we've hit a tipping point in that dynamic. Maybe we're close.

I hope so. The pendulum seems late in swinging back this go-'round.

What might COVID cost the U.S.? Try $16 trillion
Apair of Harvard economists estimates that the coronavirus pandemic will cost the nation at least $16 trillion if it ends by next fall — timing they describe as “optimistic” — and say that a number that large justifies interventions such as a coordinated nationwide program of testing and contact tracing that would save 30 times its cost.

“It’s almost hard to understand what a number of that size means,” said David Cutler, the Otto Eckstein Professor of Applied Economics. “This is like a hurricane hitting the whole country.”
