They are Fungus Gnats most likely. The Larvae are little white wormlike bastards that do most damage to seedlings. Once the plant becomes adult, the larvae become more of a pest than a threat to the life of the plant.

They like moist soil and warmer spaces, and yes, like another poster said....they hate dry soil. I have also noticed that if you have a fan over the containers, they seem to have a harder time flying arround and laying eggs in the soil. I have picked out dead seedlings, and seen them feeding on the root system. I used to use diazenon, but they don't sell that anymore. The fruit flies ( fungus Gnats) life cycle is as follows........you'll notice a few here and there, the under the right conditions(moist and warm) they lay the eggs in the first 1/4 inch of soil, the eggs turn to larvae, and the larvae feed on the root systen of your plants (It's then when they do the most damage)Pupate and fly off to make more of the nasty things. They live like 3-7 days. You'll notice the population getting bigger as they fly into your eyes, nose and ears.

I recently was recommended Pyrethrians(SP?) to kill the larvae in the soil. It is a natural pesticide created by Chrysanthemums(sp?). It seems to have knocked out the larvae, with no detrimental effect on the seedlings. I don't apply it to the seedlings, I spray it lightly on the surface of the soil.

There is nothing worse than to have a $150.00 dollar pack of seeds half decimated by those nasty worms. I HATE FUNGUS GNATS !

Hope that helped, good luck.

i thought a few fruitfly's...

First thought of such things means time to take action. If they are not paying rent, - they are not doing you well. Don't bother evicting them instead revert to rule #1: Kill them.
Rule #2- Kill them all. and lastly, rule #3: and their children.
Do not be passive in matters of this nature - you will regret it later.
All I have dealt with is spidermites - those are not spidermites.
There are dam few beneficial bugs in a grow and I've never heard of the good ones showing up for free and without a "financial investment"

Now there is a man that knows the disaster that can be wreeked at the wrong moment.

Find the source of the outbreak and fix that also. From here on - first sign of bugs is a call to war.

Damn sproutco - theres a reason they took Diazinon off the shelves.
It was causing groundwater contamination especially on golf courses. Does not cling to soil particles well.

Clings well enough to " decimate " large populations of birds. If it can kill birds then it cant be that great to smoke on any level.

... In 1988, the Environmental Protection Agency prohibited the use of Diazinon on golf courses and sod farms because of decimation of bird flocks that congregated in these areas. In the United States as of December 31, 2004, it became unlawful to sell diazinon outdoor, non-agricultural products...

Well I thought since there is fungus on your soil, it could be because of high humidity..What is your watering shedule? Too frequent watering could also contribute to your fungus gnat problem I think :chin:

I use sticky traps as preventive measure, I recommend them also.
