OK guys an gals I need some opinions from ya'll on bucket size, What size do you use and is bigger better?? :chin:
I personally am looking at doing Coco hempys in 25l buckets, am I crazy or what?? :D
Cheers
:gday:

After trying several different sizes, I prefer 2 gallon buckets, watered daily. This combo has given me the best results. They love the daily drenching, which brings fresh oxygen. I had 7-8 foot plants (Sativas) in 2 gallon buckets. Can't move 'em around much without tipping, though.

So in your personal experience you found that a bigger bucket was not much of a benefit in regards to overall plant/bud size?? :chin:
I just want to give the plant the most amount of roots and root space but keep in mind I'm a soil person and have never grown in coco before ever, plus I'm always floored by the huge arsed sized plants that are grown in small arsed containers of coco :yoinks: I need that sized shit in my life for sure :good:

:thank you: Cheers for the replys fellas :tiphat:
Thinking I may cut down to 10 - 15l buckets, I only have 2m of headroom and will be doing scrogs vert style on each bucket around a 600w bare bulb :D
:tiphat: give the bottom a good check boom on those 15=20 litre ones we get
are very brittle, sides are good and tough, super cheap buckets.:biggrin:no fucken good when the arse drops out old mate.

Correct. In coco, you don't need as big a container as soil, as coco contains large amounts of oxygen, and the roots/plants love it. See photos of mine earlier in this thread. Note: in coco, it is important to get quality coco. Canna is the #1 recommended, because it is pre-charged and contains trichoderma, and is ready to use right out of the bag. If you can't get Canna where you are, there is a thread here that discusses the best coco brands, and ones to avoid. I think you should be able to get it though.

Hey Boomer

so your thinking coco hempys for the shed huh ??? Cool !!!
2 or 3 gallons will do great with the size plants you like to grow . 2's might need more than 1 feed later in flower & the 3's will probably not . not sure how often you'll be able to get in there so , 3's might suit your needs more than the 2's . you gonna set up a drip system at all or just gonna hand feed ???

either way brutha .... any questions .... you know where I am
& good luck with'em bro ..... your going to love the growth in coco !!!

Hey Dansbuds would you recommend the coco Hempy with Blumats or just a regular buckets and coco with my blumats? I'm definitely using blumats just need to decide what buckets. I'm using 3 gallon as I plan to veg for up to 90 days. My clones are in 16 0z hempy cups right now while they root up. THX

I've used the blumats on hempys , they're a little harder to dial in than a regular DTW bucket , but yeah they work great once dialed in .

Really good thread guys, thanks for all the info.

I did see it mentioned at a few instances but I'd like to know in general; is it cool to use stuff you would not use in true hydro like DWC (which I'm growing tired of doing sub-par at) such as more teas and "organic" type stuff?

In a traditional either perlite/vermiculite/(maybe hydroton for the res) or coco/perlite hempy, is it ok to use whatever type of nutes/ferts you want? teas, mycorrhizae, bene's, even organic type (bottled) feeds?

Thanks.

Nothing wrong with that. They should yield over half a pound each, maybe up to 12 zips, depending on strain. What strain and how long was the veg? Looks like about 6 weeks......No need to "up pot" them in coco Hempys.....

The first pic is Heath Robinson's V3 and the second pic is DNA's L.A. Chocolat. I think they've had 7+ wks in veg now! Was waiting for a space in the flower room, but with the size of the Chiesel I just finished and the White Lemon that's gone in it's place, there isn't really room. I will just pop them on the corner and see what happens I think. I'll take cuts from the DNA as I want to try a tree grow with that one. The V3 I already have clones :)

Does it matter what is used to fill the reservoir? I've seen it mentioned that some are using lava rocks, perlite, chunky perlite and hydroton. Couldn't any item of similar size such as gravel, marbles or other items be used with the same results?

It really doesnt matter. Anything with low water absorption, that doesnt float is fine. I have used hydroton, perlite and "birdsnest" coco.

If you use things with low water absorption then all you are doing is decreasing the amount of water/nutes below the 2" high hole. Probably the same effect as using straight coco and drilling the hole only 1" high:biggrin:
I wanna try filling the bottom with those plastic wiffle golf balls with all the holes in them. They won't displace much water/nutes and the roots will have all kinds places to grow into:tiphat:

Hey Ron: I know growstones float, I don't think I've seen any ill affect-are growstones alright? Thanks

The plastic wiffle golf balls is a perfect idea. I even have a package that I could use to experiment on one hempy pot. Since I'm now 2 or 3 weeks away from harvest, I decided against taking a clone to start another hempy pot, but will definitely try the wiffle golf ball idea in about a month.

So by that logic, the higher the water absorbtion capability the better?

I assumed coco would absorb more water than hydroton, perlite or any of those other common media.

Isn't the purpose to anchor the plant and to allow water to be drawn up through the roots?
