Closet Grow - DELUXE

Green Devil

Member
Hi guys!
I am going to document my new grow-op here on icmag.

However, this is not just going to be another "garden in a closet" grow..

This is going to be one of the most, if not the most, spectacular closet grows here on icmag! =)

First and foremost I would like you all to know that I am a commercial grower and I do have a SoG set up in a cabin deep down in the forest so this project will be more a "just for fun" grow!

I should also tell you that I do not smoke weed on a regular basis, I enjoy it but I don't smoke more than I drink.
In fact, I can't even roll a good joint! :dance013:

Anyway, enough about me!

Here is my idea

When growing indoors, in an apartment, there are three important factors you have to take in consideration!

  • Smells and other odors.
  • Sound level.
  • Temperature.

1.
Obviously I do not want to get caught..
So eliminating smells will be my first priority.

I am thinking two carbon filters (200m3 100mm), one Ozone Generator (45 m2), one Ona Pro Gel and two HEPA filters.

2.
The sound level can definitely become a problem, not only because of my neighbors but also due to the fact that I live in the apartment and want to able to sleep without problems.

For this reason I will have one intake hole, and two exhaust holes.
But I will only have two fans (for the exhaust holes).
I am thinking two S&P TD-SILENT, one connected to the lamps and then to a carbon filter while the other will be connected directly to a carbon filter.

Both fans will be connected to the HEPA filters on the other side towards the kitchen.

The intake hole will be into my bedroom while both exhaust holes will be to the kitchen.

3.

I have been growing cannabis for a few years now (about five) and when I started - I started in my closet.
Unfortunately the first grow was a failure due to the temperature.

I had two 1000W HPS lamps in a closet with poor ventilation, so my plants died! :frown:

This however, will not happen again.
But I do want ~1000W..
Which is why I have chosen to grow with the GAVITA Pro 300 LEP lamp which is a plasma lamp and not a High-intensity discharge lamp!

Since one lamp is 300W, I will be using three of these (the air cooled version).

And I can tell you that the results are amazing with plasma compared to HID, at least in my opinion - and it will keep the temperature down compared to MH/HPS!

I could grow with LED, but this is once again a deluxe grow!
LED is good, no questions about that BUT I believe that the LED technology for growing must develop much more!
Until that day, I will not be using LED to anything but clones!

So what do you think, do I got the big three covered? :clover:

Growing medium!
Soil is so old school nowadays, so I have decided to go with the GHE DPS Aero 1m2
which I think is a great system (I am using the 2m2 version in my serious grow-op!

Love aeroponics! <3

Furthermore I am going to use Co2 as well as a ScrOG method!

I haven't chosen strain yet, but I am thinking about Blue Cheese, G13, NYC Diesel, Pineapple Chunk and The Widow!

Suggestions? =)

I will begin with this project later this day!
Wish me good luck!
Hopefully I can learn and be learned a lot here on icmag in this growing diary!

:smoweed:

Cleaning the Closet!

Cleaning the Closet!

Thanks guys! :sasmokin:

So I have just cleaned my closet and brought out all of my cloths to the living room for now!

What I must begin with is to take down all the shelves in the closet!

The shelves are down!

The shelves are down!

Thanks!
Yeah I hopefully will! =)

So the shelves are now gone but it looks like someone gone loose with an AK47 in here...

It was concrete nails which almost took half of the walls with them -.-

Going to have to spackle this..
Since the humidity is going to be high in the closet I better get some special made spackle for bathrooms!

The testing done with the 300watt Gavita plasma lamps are normally used to supplement HID lighting in all the test grows that I have seen......FYI

I would probably consider you do lots more research before pulling the trigger on your lighting design as I think you could do much better with a slightly different configuration.

Have also seen a Gavita plasma in combination with LED lighting and I must say, for the amount of power drawn from his garden in relation to the Lumens and PAR values he gets is off the charts!

Anyhow, good luck to you in whichever configuration you choose. And thanks for sharing with us as well!

Cheers!

FYI Plasma can do just fine on its own (300W Plasma x3), trust me on this one! =)
But I must say that your idea of combining Plasma with LED did not sound that bad..

Is there any LED panel you would recommend?
Maybe two SG 1250 HO or two SG VEG?
Or maybe you are thinking about some other panels?
Please share! :)

So I have been trying to cover the holes with spackle and I am almost done with the first layer!
Will continue later tonight and then let it dry over the night so I can start with the grinding tomorrow!

How are things coming along?

Good!
Thanks for asking! =)

Just ordered the fans as well as the HEPA filters!
I am almost done with the walls as well as the floor!

Going to add tiles on the floor and a lot of vapor barrier to the walls!
Also put on a pad lock to the door as a temporary solution when brining my friends over!

You can use just plasma, but it is not very efficent compared to HPS. With three LEP 300 lamps you would have less light than one 600W HPS lamp (900 vs 1100 umol s-1) while using 900W compared to 640W for the 600W HPS.

I would recommend at least 1x600 HPS (or 1x1000W HPS if you have height enough) together with two plasma lights. veg under plasma, add the HPS when swtching to 12 hours. You keep the advantage of the high quality added light but you also have the advantage of the red en even the infrared you need for your crop.

With one HPS and two plasma lights your yields wll be a lot better than with three plasma lights. We have been there, done that is a comparison between:

- 3x LEP
- 1 x 600 HPS
- 1xLEP + 400 HPS

The last two were very close actually, but the first one, though excellent quality, was lacking in yield. The combnation HPS/Plasma was not the highest yelder of the three because is had less micromoles than the 600W HPS, but had overall the better quality and less popcorn than the HPS.

LEP lacks heat radiation, same as LED. It will also save you some investment and get an earlier return.

But if you are going to try witj three plasmas by all means, I will be following you. Just don't let me tell you "I told you so" at the cutting board ;)

Would it not be possible to combine LED with Plasma instead of using MH/HPS?
I know from experience that HID in closets is a bad move due to the fact that HID lamps gets really hot which will bring the temperature far to high..

If not, would this HID be a good option?
Or maybe the temperature wont differ so much from a regular air cooled HID (cool tube)?

:thank you:

So I will now start to drill the intake hole, the plan is to drill the hole from the closet to my bedroom!

if you use the hps in a cooltube or coolshade you can remove lots of the heat that is generated by the lamp and just blow it right out of your growroom.

When looking at lumens and PPF HPS is better than Plasma lightning..
Sure, I do want a big yield but I don't want to kill the plants because of heat problems..

I'm thinking of lowering the ceiling and put the lights as spotlights to create some space above the lamps to draw as much heat as possible out.

I also ran into some problems when drilling the intake hole.
Apparently, there was a huge "chimney like" hole before I drilled all the way into my bedroom.

Best part of this, is that cool air is rising from the basement of the house. So I decided to close the hole in my bedroom and just use the cool air that's rising from the basement instead!

Too bad I didn't get here earlier, I myself haven't grown in sealed rooms but I would suggest it for the fact that the smells shouldn't leave the one room, and you still run a carbon filter in the room. Then get an a/c ( perhaps with a dehuey) and correct BTU for the wattage of lighting you plan to use.

Figures you're already cutting intake/outakes, when I find the thread and comment. I guess it food for thought, I myself haven't run a sealed room... dunno if closets are too small or not. I also thought in the sealed situation you may have less fans to run if you use an A/C, which helps with noise control.

I will have 4 fans in total, two SP-silent fans (100mm) and two wall mounted fans to create maximum air movement!

The ozone generator should arrive tomorrow, got one for €400 so it should eliminate the smell without problem.
But just to be safe I will have one, or maybe two, carbon filters as well as Ona Pro.

After I have covered the entire room with vapor barrier as well as the mat you should add I will use wallpaper paste for bathrooms to paste a reflective material all over the place (even the roof).

Will be drilling two more holes in to the kitchen later this week when the TD-Silent fans arrive!

As for the lamps..
Pros and cons I figured out.

Plasma
+ heat
+ spectrum
+ watt consumption
- price
- lumen/PPF

HPS
+ lumen/PPF
+ price
- heat
- watt consumption

Still not sure.. :chin:
Help me out here guys! :)

Don't just look at the power consumption, look at efficiency as well. So "watt consumption" is actually the other way around as hps give you more light per watt

If you are going to use Lep then use at least one hps lamp. When worried about the heat put it in a wide cool tube and extract through that. In that case you can also use air cooled plasmas, because though there is not much heat in the light, they still dissipate heat of course. Use the cooled fixtures parallel to prevent pressure drop.

I would not lower the ceiling. The more air in your room the more stable the climate. A small room is much more difficult to keep to temp than a large room.

Green Devil

Member
The plan was to lower the ceiling and force the heat above the plasterboard, and then bring the heat out with a fan.

Anyway, I have now started with the vapor barrier so the plan is to finish the room next week!
