It does seem pretty easy... I guess it takes longer than other methods, but I still have a 100% success rate with this method. Heck, the other day the wife and I were at a restaurant eating some soup, and I decided to take some of the Thai Basil sprigs home and try this method on them. They had been sitting in the restaurant's prep area for who knows how long, or how long ago they'd been chopped, but I figured 'what the hell, probably won't work but doesn't hurt to try'.

Well, it worked :) I now have four beautiful red-stemmed Thai basil plants that are doing great! Since I could never find this variety of basil anywhere, I am exceptionally pleased, hehe.

It works for more than just weed, apparently

Hi all, thought I would show a couple of pics of my method. I have used the floating poly in water, but now I do in old film canisters. This clone is off the mum, but lately I am taking cuts from the plants that are 11 to 12 days into 12/12 or flower. I will show some pics of my next lot of clones latter but for now....

And some old ones of the poly floating on water. The one on the left you can see some cloans in the poly and the right one some root porn. The beauty of the poly is that the roots/cuts are always in contact with the water. The film canisters need to be monitored.

If you are not in rush water is the best way to clone. Simple and clean.
Pre-toppend clones in plain water.

does the water need to be aerated once you start to see roots forming ?

Also do you think it would help if you add some type of root hormone in with the water ?

Iv'e not aerated once roots show and Iv'e kept them in plain water for up to 2 months and they still are fine.

root hormones may speed up the process a bit but Iv'e not found a need for it, just plain old water (I use rain water). Just occasionally change the water to keep it fresh.

Thanks my man

ill try to collect some rain water next time it rains

you said to change the water occasionally to keep it fresh

how often is occasionally ? every other day ?

so even if i do not mix a little rooting hormone in the water the cuttings will still root with in 2 weeks ?

Hey 420tyme

I'll change the water about every 4-5 days, allthough Iv'e had success many times without changing the water as well. My reconing is that with frequent changes you replenish the oxygen levels which of coarse can't hurt hey.

As far as roots showing, yes about 2 weeks is an average, sometimes they show at about 10 days, others just after 2 weeks. It depends on the health and vigour of the cutting when you take/cut it. Iv'e not used rooting hormones for years now, just plain rain water.

Hope that helps you out??

The other good thing about this method is with the colection of male pollen. If you cut a male branch with pollen and put into water, it will survive for weeks and still drop it's load, that way you can keep it out of the flowering chamber and avoid accidental polination of you mum's.

Yes it does help my man , thanks

iv been trying to clone and have not really had any success

so im just going to put it in the water and leave it alone like this thread is saying

i will change the water every 4 to 5 days like you said

and yes im gonna do a male also

and i will take a little paint brush to use to apply the pollen only on like 1 branch so i can get seeds with out the whole plant seeding :)

EDIT

So is it ok for the water to be exposed to light

or do i need to keep the light from it

also do i have to put the cuttings under a dome or is it not necessary with this method ?

much thanks my man

If you check out 1 of my earlier post's you will see that I have used a clear container with light getting to the root zone. It does not seem to cause any problems to the roots but can cause algae to start that all.

Iv'e not used a dome before, you will just need to keep an eye on the water levels as the cuts will drink and transpire water through their leaves.

It is very much a "KISS" system, and very user friendly.

It depends on what time of year and hours of light???, remember if the light cycles are 12 hours or less the cut will start to flower. I have sexed cuts before by putting straight into 12/12 and they rooted and started to flower.

So yes, in summer time with long hours of light, otherwise it would need artificial light ie: cfl, fluros, but just don't make it too bright.

Do you have to put the cutting under lights right away or do i keep it in the dark for 24hrs ?

Also

I accidentally snapped this branch a few mins ago when i was trying to lst it through chicken wire

Is this branch to big to clone in water , or is it ok to clone

Click on pic to enlarge

Put under lights as soon as you can is best, but it should not hurt it if you can't straight away.

Not to sure about "older" growth clonning. If it is still attached th the plant I would let it be as wounds do heal, having said that, if it is too far gone, I would give it a go, esspecially if you have nothing else to loose.

yea its to late

i went back out their to tape her up but the branch was just hanging their

so i went ahead and took it off ,

Got back to the house with it and cut the 45 degree angle and put some root hormone on it and stuck it under my 150hps

so now i just got my fingers crossed
