Do you feel that this would work fine with a 600w hps? Would that big of a bulb get too hot?

I'm not sure. I think a bake-a-round sized tube may be more suited to lower wattage lights (ie 400w or less). A cool tube in general can be used for anything up to 1000w from what I've seen.

I have a 1k HPS I use in my Bake-A-Round. In the past 3 years, I have not had any heat issues with it. I am using a 8" vortex on mine and it keeps it very cool... I can touch the cooltube after it's been running for 8+ hours and it's hot, but won't burn you.

well i'm gearing up to make one of these for a 250w hps got the bake around for 1 buck at the local thrift.

 Let me know how that works out for you. If you wouldnt mind posting some pix when your done with that it would be amazing.

I see that Nightfire is using an 8" Vortex for his 1K cool tube. I have a 250 hps. What type of fan do you guys I should use for this set up? Noise is a concern.

:rasta: Great tutorial Lemon, I cannot thank you enough!

Had acouple questions come up as I was going through the purchasing/constructing stage.

A) I cant find any adhesive foam tape in the plumbing section. I have been able to locate the 3M double sided sticky tape, but am unsure as to the maximum temperature it can withstand. The hot water tape seems like it should be rated fairly high. Any help on finding this would be greatly appreciated.

B) I'm planning on putting a 100w HPS and 175w MH in the same cooltube. I found a computer fan that claims it will move 220CFM. Having never used a cooltube or grown, do you think this will adequetly cool my lights?

C) How did you mount your unclosed duct(reflector) to the cooltube? I cant get a good feel of how its mounted from your pictures.

Thanks again for the great tutorial, I hope these questions are not bothersome. Goodluck bro

I have basically the same questions as 1toke. Tutorial looks good, but I'm a little fuzzy on some of the details. Hope things will be cleared up! Thanks

nice tutorial. i actually found a bake-a-round in my basement when i was digging through some old junk. gonna clean it up with some diamond magic so its spotless, then eventually make this cooltube. seen most of the stuff at homedepot but was wondering about the foam tape used and hows it holding up against the heat so far. i got some 1/4" weather stripping but dont think it can handle the heat. to cool i wanna use a stanley blower modded up or maybe just a couple thermaltake 120mm 78cfm pc fans at both ends of the tube. does that sound like enough CFM's to just cool the tube with pc fans??

Hey there.. just wondering what you guys thought.. what fan would you recommend to use for this type of cooltube application? I have only a 110CFM squirrel cage right now which is already pulling air through a 90cfm carbon scrubber. I would like to hook up a cooltube inline with this fan for my 250w HPS. The fan is already pulling the air through the carbon filter, through some PVC tubing and then out to the exhaust hole in the cab. If i put some vent ducting and thsi cooltube in the middle of all that (after the air is pulled through the carbon scrubber but before the fan) will my fan be powerful enough? Should i get a separate fan for it? What size would you recommend? I cannot afford anything big right now, i was thinking if i had to use another fan that i could maybe use one of those cheaper inline duct fans for helping to move air through vents in houses and stuff. What do you guys think? Nice tutorial Lemon.

nice work, i going to copy it from you lemon

hi lemon hope you don't have copy right on it.....lol

a few question about it but, what temp does the inside get to? looking at mounting 2 x 400 hps in side 2 pyrex tubes, just wondering for the glue?

the foam insulation does that have a heat rating too?

already had 1 fire in my grow room and never want another one,

cheers

Correctamundo, and throught the clamp it makes contact with the duct, which contacts the reflector, and so on. Don't worry tooo much about it though.. the ground on the lamp side of the ballast isn't so much important as the ground from the ballast to the electrical outlet.

The temperature on the inside of the tube will depend on your ventilation. I can't give you an exact number because I don't know and havent measured it, and am only using a 150. The outside of the tube where the insulation and adhesive make contact is cool enough to keep your hand on when the ventilation is on. The epoxy is rated at 400C i believe. The insulation I bought didnt specify, but it is intended for hot water pipes, so i presume 100 deg C (boiling temp) or less. I'm fire concious too - I'd recomend a thermostatic switch, which cuts power if the temperature in the grow space exceeds a preset level.

i was wondering, i have a 400 watt MH and i'm setting up my cool tube. my bake around is actually on its way from ebay right now. i believe the space i have for my cab is to small. its 4x4x2. and i think the light may just be to hot. do you believe this will work or should i get a smaller light. Keep in mind this is goin to be my mother and clone cab.
