"The American journalist Norman Cousins (1915-90) continued...:

"'By virtue of our birth as a human being, we have a noble duty that we share with all others. That is to believe in people and to trust each other. When, for example, we are faced with an unavoidable tragedy, though in our anguish we may temporarily lose sight of the meaning of life, we must never forget to believe in people, which is what it means to be a human being.

"'What is important is how greatly you affirm and value the irreplaceable gift of life. You must never devalue the lives and feelings of others. Your supreme goal must be mutual acceptance―and you must never abandon that most noble human sentiment, trust.'"

"Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study. Without practice and study, there can be no Buddhism. You must not only persevere yourself; you must also teach others. Both practice and study arise from faith. Teach others to the best of your ability, even if it is only a single sentence or phrase."

"All the characters in which the Lotus Sutra is written represent living Buddhas. But because we have the eyes of common mortals, we see them as characters. (It is like the example of the Ganges River. Hungry spirits see the waters of the river as fire, human beings see them as water, and heavenly beings see them as amrita. The waters are the same in all cases, but each type of being sees them differently, according to the effects of its karma.")

Let's never be defeated by the obstacle of sickness. With composure, let's be victorious!

The power of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the roar of a lion king, is unrivaled.***

Let's live out our lives by fulfilling our missions as Bodhisattvas of the Earth and become the champions of good health and longevity!

***"Believe in this mandala with all your heart. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion. What sickness can therefore be an obstacle?"- "Reply to Kyo'o", WND-I, page 412

"You must simply make up your mind. Look at the world this year as a mirror. The
reason that you have survived until now when so many have died was so that you would meet with this affair. ... This will determine whether you win honour or disgrace your name."

"Suffer what there is to suffer, enjoy what there is to enjoy. Regard both suffering and joy as facts of life, and continue chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, no matter what happens. How could this be anything other than the boundless joy of the Law?"

"Let's embark upon the challenge of undergoing our human revolution beginning first of all with chanting! By chanting powerful, sonorous Daimoku, let's align ourselves with the great power and rhythm of the universe, and open up a life of consistent victory."

"A life lived on a grand scale has problems on a grand scale. And problems on a grand scale are what enable us to expand our life-state on a grand scale.

"Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910), the renowned Russian author and spiritual giant, said that whenever he encountered an impasse, he would remind himself of his purpose in life. By always returning to his starting point in this way, he was able to look calmly on his problems and overcome them. His conclusion was: 'When people awaken to their true mission in life, they can solve any problem they have.'"

Now, no matter what, strive in faith and be known as a votary of the Lotus Sutra, and remain my disciple for the rest of your life. If you are of the same mind as Nichiren, you must be a Bodhisattva of the Earth. And if you are a Bodhisattva of the Earth, there is not the slightest doubt that you have been a disciple of Shakyamuni Buddha from the remote past. The sutra states, “Ever since the long distant past I have been teaching and converting this multitude.”11 There should be no discrimination among those who propagate the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo in the Latter Day of the Law, be they men or women. Were they not Bodhisattvas of the Earth, they could not chant the daimoku. At first only Nichiren chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, but then two, three, and a hundred followed, chanting and teaching others. Propagation will unfold this way in the future as well. Does this not signify “emerging from the earth”?

"'When praised highly by others, one feels that there is no hardship one cannot bear. Such is the courage that springs from words of praise.'- From "The True Aspect of All Phenomena" (WND-1, 385).

"We can impart courage and strength to others through words of encouragement. Everyone is heartened by praise. It makes them feel happy, brighter and more positive. All people inherently possess a life force equal to that of the Buddha—a lifeforce as vast as the universe itself. Nichiren Buddhism enables us to tap that life force to the fullest."

"Let's spiritedly forge ahead, commending and applauding one another's efforts. And let's especially offer warm words of encouragement to our youth and future division members, and create a new Soka citadel of capable people. Together, let's open the way to a hope-filled future."

"The Soka Gakkai is a gathering of Bodhisattvas of the Earth, which is carrying out the practice of Bodhisattva Never Disparaging in the present age. As such, our fundamental spirit is to respect all people, to pray and work for the happiness of humanity, and do everything we can to help and support others.

"In the world today, there is a growing indifference towards others. Genuine humanity has fallen to the wayside as relationships based on self-interest and power hold sway. That makes it all the more crucial to build a society that is filled with human warmth and characterized by mutual respect, trust, and support.

"This is the mission of the Soka Gakkai, and its leaders must be in the vanguard of this effort. A revolution in the life state and character of our leaders, therefore, is the greatest driving force for kosen-rufu."

"In the Latter Day of the Law, the votary of the Lotus Sutra will appear without fail. The greater the hardships befalling him, the greater the delight he feels, because of his strong faith. Doesn’t a fire burn more briskly when logs are added? All rivers flow into the sea, but does the sea turn back their waters?"

"'Just as flowers open up and bear fruit, just as the moon appears and invariably grows full, just as a lamp becomes brighter when oil is added, and just as plants and trees flourish with rain, so will human beings never fail to prosper when they make good causes.' From “The Third Day of the New Year” (WND-1, 1013).

"Those who make the best possible causes in their lives through working for kosen-rufu will never fail to enjoy immeasurable good fortune and benefit. Such are the workings of the law of cause and effect in life.

"How admirable are the efforts of those who strive tirelessly day after day for the happiness of others and the peace and prosperity of society! They are certain to achieve lives of brilliant victory."
